Welcome, one and all, to the Tournament of Champions! For those of you who might not have paid attention to the tournament-related threads on the Versus Forum for the past few months, this is a collaboration of members of MTGS who have nominated teams, submitted write ups, and have otherwise invested time and energy to create a single-elimination tournament consisting of 32 different "tag teams", pitted against each other in a supreme fighting championship. Who will decide the ultimate winner? Why YOU of course!
There will now be two matches every week, each one also lasting a week (except semi-finals and finals, those last for two weeks each) until the conclusion of the tournament, and you're just in time for Round 1.
One of this week’s matches:
Team "Fun Size" - Yoda and Kirby
vs.
Team "Pest Control Problem" - Mighty Mouse and King Mickey Mouse (Kingdom Hearts)
The members of both teams are transported to a different dimension with all information about their opponents “uploaded” into their minds. They have 30 minutes to prepare and talk to each other (they don’t know anything about each other as teammates, save for any experience from previous matches of this same tournament), and will also have full access to any technology, magic, weaponry, resources, etc. which they would routinely be able to use from their respective universes. Teammates may share resources with each other. Afterwards, both teams are teleported to the randomly chosen plane, which has mystically sealed off so that none of them can escape the battlefield in any way. The team that manages to knock out and/or kill both members of the opposing team will be declared the winner. There is no time limit.
Write ups for both teams:
Team "Fun Size" - Yoda and Kirby
Yoda is a diminutive Jedi Master who has incredible power over the Force and otherwise is a skilled lightsaber duelist in his own right. Hundreds if not thousands of years old, with enough experience in the force to be arguably the strongest Jedi not amplified by a deux ex machine plot device.
Kirby is a diminutive pink blob who has the ability to swallow literally any physical being or object and gain the properties of that being or object. This includes stealing of powers or otherwise just adopting traits that are beneficial to him.
They are together because they are fluffing adorable.
Team "Pest Control Problem" - Mighty Mouse and King Mickey Mouse (Kingdom Hearts)
Mighty Mouse is a super powered Mouse that is basically Superman in rodent form.
Mickey Mouse of the Kingdom Hearts Universe is a magical mouse armed with a Keyblade that is basically King Arthur in rodent form.
They are together because they can do damn impressive things despite both being mice.
How do I vote for the team I like? Well, I'm glad you asked...
This tournament uses a “Dual-Voting System” in which every user on MTGS may vote twice, once on the poll of the thread, and once by posting on the thread itself (by explicitly stating “I vote for team *insert name* because *insert reason*” in a post on the thread). You may spread these votes as you wish (you can vote anonymously on the poll for one team, but express your vote publicly through a post for another), or use them both to vote for the same team, or only vote once (using either method). In the end, the total of both "poll" and "post" votes will be used to determine a winner. In the event of a tie between total votes, the team with the most votes posted publicly on the thread itself shall be declared the winner, and move on to the next round. You only have one week to vote (two weeks for the semi-finals and finals), and the poll automatically closes on Sunday, 12MN (GMT +1). Only posts that occur before that time will be counted as valid votes.
Now, who wins this match? Root for your favorites now!
Round 1: "Godslayer" vs. "Wizard Guide" - Team "Wizard Guide" (25 - 39)
Round 2: "Cybernetic Cannon" vs. "By Your Powers Combined" - "By Your Powers Combined" (21 - 24)
Round 3: "Smash" vs. "Metal Men" - "Metal Men" (22 - 27)
Round 4: "Justice For All" vs. "Speed" - "Justice For All" (25 - 20)
Round 5: "Fun Size" vs. "Pest Control Problem" - ???
Round 6: "Rescue the Princess" vs. "Disney Villains" - ???

Well I'm not so knowledgeable on kirby or mighty mouse but I feel that in a fight King mickey could probably go even with Yoda considering how badass he was in kingdom hearts. The arena they are fighting in seems amusing too since yoda's greatest asset is his force powers.
IIRC the way that yoda fights so crazily is because he enhances himself with the force which (if the arena's effects that are in effect) will give everyone else the buff, and if he tries to force push, everyone will be pushed.
Seems like a fun match!

I totally agree that Yoda versus Mickey in a swordfight would simply be spectacular. Then when they realize they are more or less evenly matched in that department, they'll probably blast each other with spells and Force powers. Very close fight to call.
Even better than that, Kirby can absorb everyone's powers, and will probably begin the match by eating Yoda and spitting him out, quite literally, during the prep time (and Kirby's a great magic user himself, depending on the game and gear he has, of course) and Mickey is also a powerful spellcaster (that Keyblade doubles as a wicked magic wand with plenty of Final Fantasy-style spells available).
If done correctly, everyone's powers will be bouncing off the walls, and since Mighty Mouse is a *much weaker* Superman in mouse form (only super strength, invulnerability and flight, and, depending on the version, X-Ray vision, minor telekenesis, and a band of solid red light from his flight trail as additional powers), we can assume he'll have the classic "weakness to magic", and since everything will be flying around the Glimmervoid Basin, something magical is certainly going to hit him...

I've got to say, this week's matches would certainly be fun to watch. I think Yoda and Kirby take this one though. Not that I don't love the mice too.
Which is why I chose them. I think people are a bit hungover from the comic book characters, so I decided to keep my promise to have "Rescue the Princess" up this week, and put the other match that was planned on hold for a while, until we decide to make the power levels a bit fairer for them.
That said, Yoda and Kirby make a strong team, because during the prep time (and very amusingly as well) Kirby could eat Yoda and borrow his powers, effectively meaning there would be three Yodas on the battlefield (I count Mickey as being in Yoda territory), and Kirby can steal either Mickey or Mighty Mouse's powers while Yoda bounces around using his swordsmanship skills after realizing that using the Force in this arena has repercussions.
On the other hand, the two mice are very tough contenders. This version of Mickey is an expert swordsman (and anyone who has played or seen him fight in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 knows that he could probably take on Yoda in terms of swordsmanship; as seen in this fanart here). Mickey is also a skilled magic user, having been taught by Yen Sid and Merlin, the most powerful wizards in the Disney side of the KH universe, which mixes both their magic and Final Fantasy magic such as Firaga, Blizaga, Curaga, etc.
Mighty Mouse is also Superman-lite, and while he's not as insanely strong or as tough as Superman, he's still got super strength, invulnerability and flight, as well as some useful powers like being able to emit red bands to incapacitate opponents (which would be very useful for a KO).
I think this match of the little ones in the tournament can be quite close if people realize how even these two are, at least in my eyes.
Don't mean to influence this too much but in the cartoons mighty mouse could turn back time (The Johnstown Flood and Krakatoa).
Is this allowable because if so then this match is over before it even starts
Nope. Good luck spinning the world on it's axis on a plane where you can't even leave the arena. Besides, there's nothing to turn back time to, methinks.
Let's just stick to Mighty Mouse being a classic Superman tribute, but with a lot less power than the Man of Steel himself, or we'll have another Doomsday/Flash problem on our hands.
Besides, couldn't Kirby just use Yoda's powers to close in, hold Mighty Mouse in place for a short time with The Force, and steal his powers? That essentially makes this a mirror match with two Yodas and two Mighty Mice duking it out afterwards.

I'm pretty sure that the effects of the Basin would serve to duplicate Mickey's magic, but might it also apply to The Force?
Oh, and speaking of Mickey's magic, since he's so short on combat feats in the KH games, can we just assume he has access to Sora's battery of spells from KH2?

I'm pretty sure that the effects of the Basin would serve to duplicate Mickey's magic, but might it also apply to The Force?
Here's the thing: What is "magic" exactly? That term differs in Middle Earth, the Harry Potter Universe, the Multiverse of MTG and even in the Final Fantasy settings.
In a classic literary sense, The Force is essentially magic. It operates on feelings, emotions and is, in many cases, the antithesis to science (which is why Star Wars is a mix between the scifi and fantasy genres), capable of performing inexplicable feats which cannot be quantified by technology. This is how The Force is introduced in Episodes IV to VI anyway. Remember that one of the Emperor's generals called out Vader on his "sorcerous ways" and Han Solo was so skeptical of The Force that it seemed like a "mystical energy field" to him. Textbook definition of magic.
Later on, in Episodes I to III, we discover that The Force persists through something called "midi-chlorians", much to the dismay of many Star Wars fans who prefered to cling to the idea that The Force was a power that surrounds us, that anyone can tap into. It essentially made Jedi and Sith no more than mutants. Then again, that didn't diminish the Harry Potter universe's definition of magic, since in that world, you're born with the capacity for it (kind of like in Star Wars), and it can be hereditary, or it can show up on a random Muggle.
In other words, what constitutes as "magic" is often flip-flopped in fiction. Would the "Bending" arts in the Avatar Universe be considered magic? They've been called that by Sokka in Season 1, after all, and rely on mystic energy and chi, despite somewhat obeying the laws of science and physics. Would sufficiently advanced technology be considered magic? Would we borrow Thor's definition of "magic and science being one and the same"?
Even our trading card game has a liberal defenition of what makes Magic. Spells like Bandage (which would be affected by the arena), show us that even mundane effects can be deemed magical, and I'm sure that more than one card references some sort of scientific phenomena rather than a magical one, like Magnetic Flux, for example. Plus, Mirrodin is a scifi-fantasy setting, so I think the definition of "magic" has to be broad in this case as well.
This is why I think the whole point of the Glimmervoid Basin is that any forms of energy in general (which we could probably consider to fall under the wide blanket of magic) would be bounced off, reflected or amplified by the terrain, which means you either fight in close combat or take risks by tapping into those powers.
It's also infinitely more fun if the Basin would affect everyone's powers (Mighty Mouse's band trails and x-ray vision would be affected, and Yoda's Force powers would fly off the walls) rather than just those of Kirby (who has access to magic due to his wand; again, another type of magic as defined by another universe) and Mickey (who is probably the only character who undisputedly uses something we would probably all consider to be magic).
My personal opinion is that the Basin acts as a reflector of different forms of energy, rather than *just* magic, because otherwise we would be debating all day as to "what constitutes as magic", when I think the properties of the Basin simply apply to all forms of power involving high concentrations of mana, which could be anything in the multiverse, really (as clearly evidenced by the sheer amount of sorceries and instants that could very well be non-magical).
Oh, and speaking of Mickey's magic, since he's so short on combat feats in the KH games, can we just assume he has access to Sora's battery of spells from KH2?
Using the "Assumed Secondary Powers" principle that I fleshed out in the other match for this week (because the Disney Villains are also short on feats if we only use their primary source material), I would assume so. After all, Mickey was personally trained by the best of the Disney wizards (and is therefore justified by canon to be a highly skilled magic user; heck, his wife is a scarily powerful holy magic user in the KH universe), and the only other person whom we can use as reference for Keyblade powers equivalent to Mickey's blade is Sora. Thus, I personally feel that it is alright to assume that anything Sora's Keyblade can do is a reasonable assumption for King Mickey's powers as well (and those things verge on ludicrous power sometimes; that Keyblade can hurt fallen angels, elder gods and genies).
Using primary material, Mickey has immense cutscene power (link here, relatively spoiler-free). He can take down powerful heartless in a single blow, can travel through dark magic portals unharmed, and has defended the main heroes of the KH saga from numerous instances where they were rendered helpless and in the face of insurmountable odds. Plus, no one's denying he's a great swordsman as well, quite possibly in Yoda's caliber.

And now, for the inevitable question - can a lightsaber cut through pure plot device (i.e. the Keyblade)? I'd say no, given the Keyblade's occasional ability to exist as energy.
Also, if Kirby's duplication ability can copy a magic wand, could it copy a lightsaber?
And as for Team Pest Control's strategy, I can see Mickey hanging back and using support magic (probably Stopga) while Mighty Mouse does his thing and engages Y&K directly, especially since Mickey possesses very potent healing magic.

I didn't so much forget, as I didn't read the effects of Glimmervoid Basin correctly. Copying for each possible target (as opposed to the one copy I originally thought was generated) complicates things and serves to effectively make this a physical match.
How resistant is Mighty Mouse to energy attacks? Because if the answer is "not very," then this is going to turn into a 2-on-1 match fairly quickly. I'll have to go do some research.

Well according to what I read on a superman vs. mighty mouse form, his invulnerability goes farther then nukes. At one point he jumped on an A-bomb and after the dust cleared from the explosion he dusted him self off without a scratch went "he he" and went and beat the snot out of some cats so he needs to be taken down by magic otherwise I don't see him going down in this fight.
I'm still undecided but I can't help but think the location is going to hurt both Yoda and Mickey in this one. Their...powers, are going to be all over the place. I see both of them inadvertently hurting their teammates and helping their opponents. As far as those two go it could come down to who is able to adapt more quickly. They could also end up KO'ing themselves while trying to go after an opponent.
I also wonder about Kirby, specifically how tough is he and can he heal? If Mighty Mouse is basically a miniature Superman then couldn't he just fly through Kirby if Kirby tries to eat him? He could be punching holes in Kirby at super speeds and mess him up real good. Also, if Mighty Mouse can take a nuke I think it's safe to say he's the toughest one in this fight, physically anyway.
Kirby is VERY resistant to impacts. MM might be able to do a little bit of damage by using that technique to bounce him around, but I don't see it taking the puffball out.
Also, his usual M.O. of flying up to a foe and rapid-punching them isn't likely to work on someone like Yoda, who has agility and Force precognition on his side.

Also, if Kirby's duplication ability can copy a magic wand, could it copy a lightsaber?
On Keyblade vs. Lightsaber - I agree that the Keyblade (which is that universe's version of an ultimate weapon that can cut through things that it shouldn't) would probably trade blows with a Lightsaber, neither of the weapons being destroyed, leading to an epic swordfight between Mickey and Yoda.
On Kirby's powers - His duplication abilities can copy a lot of things. Among others, he can acquire a copy of the armor and weapons of his opponents. If he absorbs Yoda (which would be awkward, but a viable strategy during the prep time) he'll end up a pink puffball with a hat that has green pointy ears, and a lightsaber in his hand. Case in point, if he eats Link, for example, he turns into this.

On Kirby (again) - Dude, Kirby is super durable, routinely getting tossed around like a ping-pong ball by gods of darkness and living to beat them up afterwards. The little one can contain enemies and objects in his mouth that have no business being contained. He can eat a bomb and have it detonate in him without being harmed. He can eat stars, hold them, and fire them out of his mouth like it was nothing. He can, and has, literally chewed up and spat out other superpowered video game charaters, many of which are present in the tournament, and stolen their powers as a consequence. Some examples (and you can see his forms in the links) include Samus, Mewtwo, Link, Mario, Sonic and many, many more...
If Kirby absorbs Mighty Mouse (which is highly possible since MM apparently doesn't have heat vision or super breath and has to close in to do some damage) and spits him out, this essentially becomes an amusing mirror match between two Superman clones and two Yoda clones.

If you say that overall power level is pretty even between Yoda and Mickey and then Kirby and MM, Yoda's wisdom and force sense gives him the edge.
I see the fight starting with Yoda in Kirby's mouth then being spat out at Mickey (Super Smash Bros style). With this realm being pretty bad for magic users Yoda would close in and turn it into a sword fight where Yoda basically knows what Mickey is going to do before he does it. I imagine Kirby would start out by doing whatever he could to suck up the mouse and take some yummy powers. Once Mickey is dealt with Yoda could sparingly use some force powers to deal with the Mouse while Kirby keeps him busy.
Another option would be for Kirby to start by focusing on Mickey to gain his magic powers to use on MM. We know that Yoda can absorb force lightning so it stands to reason that he may be able to do the same with certain other magical effects.
I'm having a real hard time developing a write up for this match, or even developing an opinion. I voted for Kirby/Yoda in the poll, only because I find Mighty Mouse to be colossally boring.
I think Yoda Vs. King Mickie would be positively epic. But I can't really say which team swings one way or the other better than anyone else. Because if Kirby swallows Mighty Mouse, you essentially have two one vs. one battles of equals.

The keyword here is if Kirby can absorb Mighty. I mean, the mice know what Kirby can do, thanks to the info upload before the match, so they'd do well to avoid getting sucked into the vortex during the battle. If they can do that, they might actually have the chance to swing the match in their favor by depowering Kirby from Yoda's powers, or any other powers he geared up with (smacking him hard enough does depower him) and then denying him further skills by taking him down in normal mode. Might be a tactic for the mice to consider.

Kirby is quite a bit tougher than I knew. But even still, this is a tough one for me. These teams seem very evenly matched. So my last question (hopefully) is, do the teams know what affect the terrain will have on their magic before the fight begins? I think that could play a big roll in things because if they don't I could see Yoda and/or Mickey KO'ing each other right off the bat leaving the fight between Kirby and Mighty Mouse. If they do know then I think Yoda would do what someone here said and turn it into a sword fight as soon as possible.

Well, in my head, I always thought that the characters spend the thirty minutes in an alternate universe, made up of an amalgam of wherever they spend the most of their time, and where they have joint access to all their weapons and resources (that they would only routinely have access to, of course), and only after "the bell rings" are they transported, weapons of choice with them, to the arena, a place that none of them could have known about at first (well, except maybe those who have clairvoyance as one of their powers, but even that would be a stretch).
That said, if you believe that Yoda can foresee the arena for Team "Fun Size" (highly plausible given his connection with The Force), and that they would plan accordingly, that's quite a reasonable assumption. If you think that predicting a fight on another world is beyond Yoda's reach, and that neither team will know about the arena beforehand, that's quite fine, too. I personally think it's more fun to assume the latter and surprise the characters when they try to use their powers in the Glimmervoid Basin, but that's just me.

If that is the case then why would CP have brought dirt and water into the arena in his match? He wouldnt have known that he wouldnt normally have access to it if he didnt know about the terrain.
Ok, here's how I see this one going down with the thinking that the teams don't know where they will be fighting:
In my mind Yoda won't know anything about the effects of the location because it's on a different plane. I see the different planes and alternate universes, so not just another world, a completely different reality all together (we'll assume the force exists here as well). Because of that I think all he sees in his future for this fight is a fog so he's just as in the dark as everyone else.
So they get transported there, and right off the bat Yoda, Kirby (having absorbed Yoda's powers) and Mickey all throw out some kind of magical attack while Mighty flies into battle. All four combatants get hit with three magical attacks at once which KO's Yoda and Micky and stuns Kirby and Mighty. After a very long battle that eventually turns into a fist fight because of the terrain, Kirby emerges victorious. Largely due to the fact that he's got Yoda's powers, can absorb Mighty's powers and is just all around crazy tough. But also because of size. If he can absorb Mighty's powers then they are on pretty equal footing which makes the size difference very relevant.
If that is the case then why would CP have brought dirt and water into the arena in his match? He wouldnt have known that he wouldnt normally have access to it if he didnt know about the terrain.
Well, there are several reasons I could think of for that:
1. Aang is his partner. While CP isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, Aang is very wise, and in the Avatar universe it is common practice for Benders to carry a small amount of the elements they manipulate (such as a flask of water) in the event that they end up fighting somewhere where their element is not accessible. In that case, they didn't need to bring in air or fire (both are readily available because Aang and CP can always generate and use them), but earth and water may not be ready. I don't find it a stretch of the imagination for someone as experienced in battle as Aang to not think of such a precaution.
2. The prep time. Even assuming that Aang doesn't do the first scenario very often, they'll have time to think about the fact that they will be transported to fight their opponents in a random arena, where there's no guarantee that there will be any of their elements present. Once they realize that they're both heavily dependent on them, and that they are allowed to bring weapons into the arena, I see no reason why they wouldn't take advantage of this rule.
3. If you were a powerful elemental manipulator (pick any of them, really), and you were about to be transported in a strange world where you'd have to fight for your life, but were allowed to bring something with you, what would you bring? Personally, if I could manipulate wood (random example), I'd make sure to bring a stick with me, just in case the world I go to doesn't have any trees. I'm sure other manipulators (like Magneto and Static, another team in the tournament) would take advtantage of the ability to bring something with them as a precaution. I don't imagine someone like Magneto, for example, going anywhere without having some sort of metallic object on him as a precaution, which is why I don't think that Aang and CP, with thirty minutes to prepare, and knowledge of their limitations, will pass up that opportunity either.

Cap and Aang could pull water from the vapour in the air at anyrate and earth isn't just soil but all minerals including metals etc.
While that may be true, they were fighting in the Panopticon, and I see no point in taking the effort to produce water or earth when they could just, you know, bring some into the arena, which I think was the point of the question in the first place.

My knowledge of the star wars universe tells me that the only way yoda is able to fight like he did vs. dooku is by enhancing himself with the force. I consider this a form of magic and therefore by trying to do his standard fighting tactics he would be buffing king mickey who already flips out like yoda without being enhanced.
This makes it so yoda is the first out turning this into a 2v1 vs a kirby with yoda powers. Kirby would put up a good fight but 2v1 would be just too much for him

Fighting in: The Glimmervoid Basin (Mirrodin)

Mickey Mouse of the Kingdom Hearts Universe is a magical mouse armed with a Keyblade that is basically King Arthur in rodent form.
They are together because they can do damn impressive things despite both being mice.

Oh, it should be a fun match indeed.

Oh, and speaking of Mickey's magic, since he's so short on combat feats in the KH games, can we just assume he has access to Sora's battery of spells from KH2?

Micky's support magic would be bouncing all over the place so the support role might not be the best.
How resistant is Mighty Mouse to energy attacks? Because if the answer is "not very," then this is going to turn into a 2-on-1 match fairly quickly. I'll have to go do some research.
Also, his usual M.O. of flying up to a foe and rapid-punching them isn't likely to work on someone like Yoda, who has agility and Force precognition on his side.
How well do you do against one?

How well do you do against one?
So my vote goes to team Fun Size.
Just some ideas.
How well do you do against one?
While that may be true, they were fighting in the Panopticon, and I see no point in taking the effort to produce water or earth when they could just, you know, bring some into the arena, which I think was the point of the question in the first place.

Okay, now would be a good time to ask: any requested Teams for next week? I think we can go back to having one or two comic book characters participate to spice up the tournament a little, so Team "Basketballers" (and their mysterious opponents) will be up. Any others you'd like to see?
How well do you do against one?
My knowledge of the star wars universe tells me that the only way yoda is able to fight like he did vs. dooku is by enhancing himself with the force. I consider this a form of magic and therefore by trying to do his standard fighting tactics he would be buffing king mickey who already flips out like yoda without being enhanced.
This makes it so yoda is the first out turning this into a 2v1 vs a kirby with yoda powers. Kirby would put up a good fight but 2v1 would be just too much for him
