There are two things worth spending good money on. Jeans and Nikes. Both are well worth the money you spend. Not only will they last you forever but good Nikes and good jeans are always in style.
Am I to believe that an Angel of Serenity (a 7 drop mediocre reanimation target) is going to have the SAME value as a Hallowed Fountain? 15 bucks each? Sorry, not going to happen. Not now, not ever.
6 bucks for a Sphinx's Revelation? The value will tank by at least 50% as most of the spells of it's nature (post-Stroke).
In 3 months, say January 1st, it will be interesting to see how much you overpaid.
I spent 1300 dollars on a bmx bike, and close to 700 in magic cards this month (building legacy).....
I understand how you feel about clothing and such though.
You should actually be very proud of yourself. You spent huge amounts of money on stuff with very minimal environmental impact.
I am against inresponsible consuming as well. Like we have seen in this thread, most people are very eagerly pointing out why it is ok to consume and how neglecting over-consuming is just pretentious preaching. I think those guys are just feeling attacked, because they KNOW that their lifestyles are untenable and unethical. I used to be one those people too. But you have to face the facts, and realise that we all are responsible for the state in which earth and economy is. It's hard to realise that we are all participating in the destruction of our earth, because we have grown into our societys that glamorize consuming.
I'm not saying I do all the right chooses myself right now, but I am steering myself to consume more wisely. I decided to never buy a car, unless I am actually forced to. I live in a city that has excellent public transport, but I understand that people living in less dense areas NEED their cars. Not everyone needs an UAV, though. I have also decided to buy no unneeded electronic devices or, well, any household stuff. If I buy a new cd-player though, I will definitely look through all the second-hand marketplaces.
I'm not letting go of the things that are most important to me, like music and MtG. I still buy albums and perhaps a new set of speakers someday. I'm just saying that no one can pretend that they are not obliged to do something for the current situation. I don't understand people that say it's necessary to consume for the sake of our vulnerable economies. I'd just love to hear your suggestions about how we will apply our economical models when we have consumed most of the natural resources and polluted the environment.
All in all, I feel you OP. If you feel frustrated, a good valve for it would probably be activism. It could suck some juice out of you, and make you feel that you have actually accomplished something, thus make you less frustrated. I don't know if this possible where you live, but that's just my suggestion.
I don't want to get involved in this discussion, but I want to drop a line or two:
@Op
I know what you mean, I feel the same. In a lot of ways. Though, there are lots of people who think alike. I am not even extreme or something about this whole issue (I just know I don't need much and don't just buy stuff), but this mass of people being in love with consuming, exploiting third world countries, destroying the environment, ... like a duck takes to water actually make me cringe.
It's just most people don't start to think for themselves, and live in our society without reflecting it, or knowing how and by what means our society is living/working. If they belittle you, or call you a snob, or preaching, or w/e, just be sure, they are not right. They just prefer to close their eyes to certain aspects of current life, society and consumerism.
i think they are right because it sounds like a lot of show-caring or faux-caring about exploiting third world countries or destroying the environment.
If you really care about third world countries, then send your money over there. Consuming feeds third world countries. Talking about "consumerism" while not spending, does nothing to help them.
The fact that your consumer neighbors enjoy themselves, but you "open your eyes, put a sad (or mad) expression on your face, and criticize consumers" helps nobody. Your "sympathy" helps nobody.
Put your money where your mouth is. Send it overseas to somebody poor. THEN you can consider telling your friends that they're exploiting the poor. As it currently stands, you're doing worse than your friends are to the poor.
I can understand hating consumerism but materials aren't necessarily bad. If I want to buy a nice car because I'm a gear head and like cars then I should be able to. I like driving fast on track days and rally teams. I mean from your posts you seem to be a pauper/custom/casual guy so this might not matter but mtg really is kind of the same thing.
