I'm currently busy working on a short story wich i'm gonna turn into a transmedia short movie. This transmedia movie will be my graduation project. The film itself should be about 20 minutes long. 30 tops. The story is simple.
A student takes on a side job at his university. He's cataloging stuff found in the cold storage. One item catches his eye. An small crate with a label that reads:'' Tissue sample, unknown origin. Antarctic Expedition 1917''. The description mentions that the crate contains a clump of cells that are of unknown origin, probably a sponge. The tissue sample, however , has regenerated into a complete ''hand''. It's dormant and still growing and very much alive. But what will it eventually grow into? And is mankind ready for such an event?
The thing is. I have two small problems.
1. I have no idea how to further the story. I know how to begin it and how to end it. The second act is still a vague area. So how would you handle the situation our protagonist is in? It's certainly a huge discovery! But what next? Should he go mad?(i'm leaning on yes.) Or should the approach be more scientific?
2. The hand. How should it look like? I don't want it to look overly human, just ''humanoid''. I don't it to be obviously alien/demonic. I'm leaning on eldritch. It's vibe should be downright unpleasant. It won't be a murder weapon. Just weird, disturbing and supernatural and downright unpleasant to be around and even look at.
Where should i look for inspiration for these two topics? Want to spar with me or simply throw some ideas? Leave a comment!
Remember, it still has to be my project. So pushes into the right way is more helpful than sending me a complete prop hand or screenplay.
Many, many thanks in advance!

I'd change either your date or the location of the find. By 1917 even the US had got involved in WW1 and any expeditions had already left and were in the Southern Seas or would have run into issues with marauding German Uboats.
You are probably best served by tagging along with either Padobies expedition the above story covers or the unnamed expedition he is attempting to stop bringing something back as your basis and then working from there.

First. I'm familiar with the works of lovecraft. He's been the main source of inspiration of my work. The date 1917 was chosen at random. I wanted it to be pre-WW2. Maybe i should push it back a few years? Say 1907'ish?
Also, the students reaction to the discovery of the hand. At first i wanted it to go the ''practical joke'' route. However, if you chose to go hat route you'll have to introduce some new characters. My budget allows the use of max 4 people. The protagonist might be shocked and think the hand is joke and examine it on his own. Because it would have been quite the elaborate joke to put a fake hand in a sealed crate locked in deep away in the collage's cold storage.
What kind of person should i consult if i want to know how to make a humanoid hand that fits my criteria? Biologists? Psychiatrists specialized in phobias?

To early. At that point the people heading down that far south were just interested in reaching the South Pole and getting back alive and didn't always manage that. Scotts expedition was in 1912 and they all died. There wasn't time for sightseeing unless you stayed very close to the edge of the continent. Lovecraft got it right by setting his story in the late 20's early 30's when aircraft were more available and less of a novelty. As they would massively expand the range of any expedition down there and make it more likely they would stumble on something strange and unusual.
Here is list of all the expeditions that were sent to Antartica. I'd have a read around some of those and pick one of the interwar ones 1918 - 1939 or just piggy back off the Padobie expedition or the one he was trying to stop and have your kid find from one of those.

2. It should look vaguely human, but dessicated I think. Like it hasn't been properly nourished.

H.P Lovecraft has you covered.

Those are of a huge help. Will certainly use those for my research.
