I was driven from this once-great site by abusive mods and admins, who create rules out of thin air to punish people for breaking them (meaning the rule does not exist under forum rules) and selectively enforce the rules that are written on the forum rules. I am currently lurking while deleting 6 years and 2 months of posting history. I will return when ExpiredRascals, Teia Rabishu and Blinking Spirit are no longer in power.
*sigh* yet these are the same doctors that warn us of eating red meat. ugg these people need to have their medical licensing revoked.
I remember when they said that peanut butter caused cancer. Guess what? i usually eat about a peanut butter sandwich every morning for breakfast, and have done so since i was little.
no cancer.

The "doctors" in question are Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which is essentially just PETA , but with some doctors on the board so they can pretend it's made up of medical professionals.
Seriously...it seems like EVERYTHING has this warning now. I'm posting this topic because, apparently, a bunch of doctors sued McDonald's, Applebee's, Outback Steakhouse, Chili's, T.G.I. Friday's, Burger King, and Chick-fil-A because, apparently, cooking certain meats at high temperature makes the meat contain PhIP...a chemical that caused cancer in mice and rats.
It seems like everything causes cancer these days. How long until doors have a warning label that says "The sun is known to the state of California to cause cancer" so we're all adequately warned every time we step outside?
One more reason to never go to California - everything causes cancer there.
You should look into the PCRM, the group that brought forth those lawsuits...they aren't representative of the overall medical and scientific community. But yes, this would only happen in California.
As an aside, no one is saying peanut butter causes cancer...the soil where peanuts are grown can contain fungi with the carcinogen aflatoxin, which can then be found in peanut butter, but that's it. You'd have to ingest an incredible amount of moldy peanuts on a daily basis to even increase your chances of developing cancer. As we learn more about the chemical compounds found in our foods and other products, we do have an obligation to report anything that is potentially harmful to the public. What typically happens, is that researchers find a small amount of a particular compound that is known to increase the risk of developing certain cancers, and publish the result in a scientific journal. If the finding is interesting enough, or applicable to our daily lives (like cancerous PB&J sandwiches!), the media will get wind of it and sensationalize it to the point where you have people posting responses like the two of yours above. There are a few good xkcds that cover this pretty well.
EDIT: Looks like I took too long to reply while digging up xkcd comics (still looking for a particular one)
I did find one relevant message on the side of a bottle of Balsamic Vinegar once, what caught my eye was the wording.
This product contains lead, a substance known to cause cancer in California.
catch it? It actually says "contains lead"....I was more than a little surprised. Upon further research it turns out it's trace amounts that have no harm.
I'm okay with the labels, their probably a result of some weird law that only applies to California but since California is so big companies just put it on everything. It's dumb, but I can live with it, especially since it's funny from time to time.

"I've always been a fan of reality by popular vote" - Stephen Colbert (in response to Don McLeroy)
I'm beginning to think at this point that just living in general causes cancer. Really we should just put more time into figuring out a reasonable cure for it instead of figuring out what causes it (Since that's apparently everything).
granted this was in the 80's they were saying eggs and peanut butter can cause types of cancer.
they are always coming out with this type of stuff on a regular basis.
to the point that no one takes them seriously anymore.
I can't believe you legitimately believe that wasn't sensationalism and that your conclusion is that no one takes science seriously anymore. Welcome to the Texas GOP party platform?

Asking people to remove quotes in their signatures is tyranny! If I can't say something just because someone's feelings are hurt then no one would ever be able to say anything! Political correctness is stupid.

To find a cure is to understand the mechanism behind the disease. Also, easier said than done when it's getting harder and harder to obtain funding for research each year.
And yes, pretty much everything does cause cancer...we just have a better understanding of what compounds we use in our products and we now live long enough these days to see their effects on our bodies.
Your body creates cancerous cells by its self but I dont see a label on it. Seriously though when eating fast food or smoking cigarettes what do you expect to happen. I also remember reading that the amount to body mass some tests (notably aspartame) is immense something like the equivalent of 24 pack of diet coke daily for several weeks.

Ah, didn't know that. Puts it all into perspective.
Makes me feel guilty for trusting Source Watch at all as they call anything anti-PCRM a "misinformation campaign."

Well, to be fair, just as PCRM is really an animal rights group, not a physicians group, there are also various "consumer advocate" groups that are really just food industry lobby groups, and are just as untrustworthy, and those groups have some pretty unfavorable things to say about PCRM.
EDIT: Also of interest, the PETA page has a very similar section:

This all day.
Your body already has cancer cells in most people their defense mechanism can get rid of them. what causes cancer to spread depends on the person although there are triggers for it to run.
certain chemicals don't help either.
the amount of this stuff that you have to consume for some of their warnings to actually be any concern is huge.
that is like on sweet and low it has a warning on it, but what they don't tell you is that the amount that they gave the rat is like 10 or 20x what they should have to get the result.
i am sure if you ingested like a ton of the stuff in a short amount of time it would have adverse affect.

they already have that:
"New Cancer Label. Just like on cigarette boxes, certain sunscreens will now be required to have cancer-causing warning labels on them. Any sunscreen with an SPF lower than 15, along with those that don't meet the criteria for broad-spectrum, will have to be labeled: "Skin Cancer/Skin Aging Alert: Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. This product has been shown only to help prevent sunburn, not skin cancer or early skin aging."
From what I understand about the way Cancer works, it's a genetic malformation that is a reaction to particular situations and circumstances. Sort of like a severe allergic reaction to something in the environment. Some people are just genetically pre-disposed to it from certain environmental conditions. I'm not a Geneticist or Oncologist in the least bit, but from what I have read of the research on it that's what I gathered.
So for some people smoking would cause cancer, but for another person peanut butter may have a slight risk of causing it. The variance and population distributions may have have an effect on it as well, as well as general health. I've read articles that claim Vitamin B17 may be the cure for cancer, but they are still doing the research on it, who knows, we are still at the very beginning of actually understanding the human body and it's chemistry.
I think a lot of people in this thread are assuming that the average person isn't an idiot.
If by idiot, you mean the actual definition, which means ignorant, then yes we all know that. That's why we chat with each other and share information, that is what the Internet is for after all.
Have you tried to not be so angry?

your body contain cancer cells already. your defense mechanism clears these cells out and keeps them from multipling. what causes cancer in people is a trigger that causes these cells to expand at an alarming rate and your defense system cannot clear them out fast enough and it overwelms your system.

That's what I have understood so far. It's not my field and I have no interest in it, the sight of other people's blood freaks me the hell out afterall. My own doesn't bother me, but other people's blood does. I grew up in an area with a high AIDs rate during the 80's, and that is probably why.
