All I can ever taste in any alcoholic beverage is the alcohol. I figured I'd cut out the middle man and just drink vodka. Unless someone has a better idea?
... I mean, what have you been drinking?
Vodka is alcohol and distilled water. If every drink you've had tastes like vodka then something is seriously wrong.
I haven't tried a lot, I'll admit that. But no matter what, the dominant taste is alcohol. It overwhelms everything else. Mike's Hard Lemonade, Long Island Ice Tea, even beer (which I don't like in the first place).

Well, I mean, I've not had a Long Island Iced Tea, but that's like four different alcohols in that with a little bit of coke from what I understand. Yeah, that's certainly gonna taste like alcohol. As would Mike's, because it's alcohol mixed with lemonade, lemonade being mostly water anyway.
Extremicon would be good at recommending you some good beers local to your region. What beers have you had? I suppose I should ask if you've tried Guinness.
This is incorrect. Quinine water was a malaria medicine.
You are right and I am most definitely wrong on that one. It's been ten years since I read my book on the history of Gin. I wish I still had that thing...
And when I was talking about letting the alcohol touch your cheeks that isn't that I have anything against keeping it in your mouth, but when it hits your cheeks it screws up the flavor. All alcohol does this, but maybe it's just me. Once it hits the part of my mouth where the cheek and gum touch the rest of my taste buds just flip out and scream ETHANOL!!!! Instead of savoring it on my cheeks, I just float it on my tongue and that's been just fine.
I actually started drinking Martinis first and just kept getting rid of the stuff that got in the way. First it was the olives. Next was the Vermouth. In the end it was just Gin and ice. You can call Vermouth fortified, but it's still a cheap white wine that costs less per ounce than the bottles of beer I buy. Sweet Vermouth, on the other hand, is really what makes a Manhattan great. I like whisky in all forms, but Manhattans are like drinking candy...jet fueled, nose hair singing candy.
"I have no idea what it's like not to be a straight white male, and the experiences of others are irrelevant." -Conservative Motto
Calling someone a Commie is flaming and must be stopped, but turning the word Conservative into a loaded pejorative and using it over and over again is perfectly acceptable.
I love single ingredient food so it makes sense that I don't like to mix my drinks.
Fair enough. I enjoy both, depending on what it is. To me, a martini >>> gin straight, because the result is a synthesis that doesn't taste like either.
But regarding wine, I don't know if you've ever seen people who are really into wine taste wine (which is fantastically silly in my opinion), but no, wine is meant to be enjoyed.
At the Chili's I frequent, I can still get them to make me a Blue Pacific Margarita (Sauza Tequila, Cointreau, Blue Curacao and mixers) with Midori in place of the Curacao. It's heavenly and, as a bonus, bright green. And no, they don't substitute in DeKuyper Melon Schnapps, which they're supposed to—I've been a regular there long enough that I get the name brand stuff.
Due to low student budget, I do enjoy the good ol' "goon" (for you Americans, it's slang for cask wine 8$/4L wine). It doesn't taste very nice, but gets the job done. =]

Extreme, which do you recommend for the La Trappe beer? I found a local wine store that has a bottle of the dubbel, which is the only one I've found. Should I look for a stronger variety?

All their stuff is pretty good. They did invent the Quadrupel, though, and it's probably their best one.

"...because without beer, things do not seem to go as well."
NO. NO IT IS NOT PRETTY GOOD. NO ABSOLUTELY FALSE.
Dude, the stuff tastes like leather. Like leather! Like, you might as well just rinse a piece of boot leather in grain alcohol and chew on it.
Am interested in the La Trapp though, just because it comes in a large bottle. Orval makes me think twice about wanting to experiment though. Might as well just stick with the Rochefort 10.

Heh. Maybe you got a bad bottle, because I enjoyed it. I think you'd be happy with the La Trappe dubbel if that's all you can find - it's not too different from Rochefort's 8.

I like various Honey whiskeys. They have to be my favorite.
List of all I've tried.
American Honey by Wild Turkey. This is def my MVP. favorite.
Dark Honey by Seagrams Seven. Very good.
Honey Reserve by Evan Williams. Nice.
Honorable Mention..
Baren Jager by Some German liquor company.
This is some foreign liquor I found, tastes like honey translates to Bear Hunter. Really liked it.
yea luckily i live 20 minutes from the brewery, so i go down there every weekend and get a couple of bottles out of the tap.
I have an uncle that lives a couple hours from there, but I see him so infrequently that it's probably asking a bit much for him to drive over there and pick me up some and then ship it over here

My roommate bought a bottle of American Honey. We suffered trying to get that down our throats. I guess Honey Whiskey is just not our thing.

Also, thought I'd point this out:
