Real-Life Advice is a subforum designed to serve the community with useful advice on everyday topics. This includes, but is not restricted to, topics like homework, relationship advice, small repairs, fashion advice, career opportunities, etc., which can typically be discussed by laypersons.
Other topics such as medical advice or advice on psychological issues (depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, etc.) are more sensitive, as these are beyond the scope of typical users of the site. While such issues may be discussed here (for example, for sharing advice from those who have dealt with such issues, or from registered professionals on the topic at hand), extreme caution should be taken when giving advice on such topics. In many cases the best advice that can be given in such situations is suggesting that the person contact a specialized professional.
We therefore ask that you follow some "common sense" rules in Real-Life Advice threads.
Consider if you are qualified to discuss a topic before giving advice.
Provide useful and realistic advice; serious requests for help are generally poor venues for jokes.
Encourage people to seek professional help in situations involving serious problems.
As much as possible, refrain from judging the attitudes of people requesting help.
Purposely providing malicious advice will result in an automatic suspension. This includes, but is not limited to: cyberbullying, intentional deception, and encouraging actions that are likely to cause harm.
Useful resources for professional help:
"We know you are in crisis. Unfortunately, the staff and members of this website are not trained professionals in crisis situations. Please, if you are having thoughts of harming yourself or another, contact 911 (US), 112 (EU) or your country's emergency phone number to get the help you need. We care for your well being and want to help, but the professionals are much better equipped for handling your situation than we are. Stay safe, you are worth it. Best regards, MTGSalvation Staff."
