Not much context is necessary; the title says it all.
What recommendations and tips do you have for weddings, first dances, receptions in general, etc.? What about for yourself?
Although I'm rather traditional and I think they're classic, great, tried and true, Mendelssohn's Wedding March, Clarke's Prince of Denmark's March, and Wagner's Bridal Chorus may be too trite. Hmm...
For the first dance, a certain something from popular 'canon' (from not that far back) has been considered; what good is an "our song" if it's never, ever going to be on the radio, right?
For the rest of the matter, it's a 50/50 split between contemporary music and art, classical music.
In any case, to me I think the best thing is to have what you and your lady like the most. It's your (plural) wedding after all. I don't think there's any right or wrong way to do it either, so if that is what you're thinking, then go for it.
"Our song" that's never going to be on the radio isn't a bad thing, at least in my mind. I'd rather it be really THE song than worry about trivialities like whether people recognize it or not.
When my soon to be girlfriend and I studied together for the first time I asked her what kind of music she liked and we ended up listening to some Postal Service. Eventually we landed on this cover of a Postal Service song and it has been our song ever since:
I always thought it would be badass to have my gal walk down the aisle with the Imperial March playing...not sure she would appreciate that though.
As for finding "your song" it's something that should be..natural, I don't think it is something you really pick.
Ha! I used the Imperial March instead of a traditional bridal march at my wedding. Got a good giggle out of everyone, a nice shocked face out of the grandparents, and the preacher went along with it... He warned my husband to take it as a sign of what he was getting into and be prepared.
More on topic though, finding your song and the right music... it needs to make you both smile and think of each other. As was sad previously, should be natural. You'll likely just kinda know it when you hear it.

You maam are my hero. I'm a practical joker myself and this was always something I wanted to do on my wedding day.
You know even have the preacher dress up like Emperor Palpatine or a Stormtrooper

The wife and I tend toward hard rock/metal side but for our wedding song we went with Smile by Sixx A.M. Which is a ballad by one of her favorite groups. Though Love walked in by thunder is was the second choice. It really depends on the kinda music your into, as a couple.

YOU!! That Iron and Wine cover is what I was going to suggest. My wife and I had our first dance to that song.
The smashing pumpkins 'mellon collie and the infinite sadness' piano instrumental is kind of modern and beautiful imo. Ignore the song title...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rujNKQ1CHow this might also be a good option for the opening dance. Old fashioned, sentimenta/ Sure. But near flawless all the same.
