"A rich man thinks all other people are rich, and an intelligent man thinks all other people are similarly gifted. Both are always terribly shocked when they discover the truth of the world. You, my dear brother, are a pious man." - Strahd von Zarovich
I found a bunch of them while cleaning up. Should I just dump them on Goodwill or is there a better idea?
I see it as such a tragic waste of resources, production whatsits, money, etc. but, if there's absolutely no practical use for them (my mom would castigate me for being so wasteful, as she can see a hypothetical or future use for more or less everything), destroy it or dump it.
Giving to charity is plain sick. Even they have, well, BluRays or whatever; or, they have no use for them either.
Are they blank or do they have stuff recorded on them?
I'm in the process of using a capture card to record all my dad's VHS tapes (some home movies, some stuff he recorded) to MP4.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Do you have kids? Let them rip the tape out of them and have a blast. Quite a mess to clean up but the little ones would enjoy it, I'm sure.
Slightly Off Topic: When I was younger my mom used to get so mad at me for 'hacking' the VHS tapes she bought me so I could record over them with DBZ episodes and soft-core HBO/Cinemax stuff. WAYYYY better than Disney, IMO. LOL
If you're interested, the 'hack' was to put a piece of electrical tape over the small square 'hole' on the bottom right corner of the VHS tape. (I think this is where it was located, I haven't seen a VHS in SOOOO long) Sometimes you'd have to break a small piece of plastic off to accomplish this.

I just kept most of mine. I still have a VCR that works and I actually like the nostalgia of it. I recorded over important things to DVD but maintain the rest on the VHS. Same with my LD Player.
Nothing nostalgic for me about VHS. Tapes getting stuck, getting eaten, jerks at the movie rental stores not rewinding them...YMMV, obviously, but I was so happy when DVDs became more mainstream and affordable.
I have a bunch of old junk VHS tapes that I used to record TV shows on when I worked nights. They have been rerecorded dozens of times over the same spot and most are really lousy quality. How would I go about recycling them?
You might be better off hanging onto the tapes and hitting up a flea market or yard sale for a $10 VCR. Tell your friends you bought a VCR and have a bunch of old tapes, make some popcorn, and you have a Saturday night. Conversely, you could throw the tapes at pedestrians from a speeding car. That would also make for an interesting Saturday night.

But them back in storage and when your grand children come to empty your house when you die, they will have something interesting and foreign to talk about.
VHS is actually coming back into vogue as a medium, not unlike vinyl records did in the late 90s. Nostalgia pieces, like 80s horror movies or professional wrestling tapes, can actually be worth a decent amount of money. It wouldn't hurt to check on eBay or something before giving them away.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
I was in to skateboarding back in the 80s and I have a good amount of videos with Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, and Mike McGill among others. I'd love to convert them to DVD at some point.
Has anything been created to plug in to a USB to record over VHS tapes to DVD? I'd hate to have to buy one of the huge recording machines.
Get one of the "then" top of the line vcr's and enjoy them for a lifetime to come. I mean one of the really nice vcr's with all the inputs and outputs and those nice tracking wheels to go frame by frame. Bonus if you can find one at a goodwill for less then 30 bucks because vhs's are typically 99 cents and it's hard to beat that price.
Here is an article about it:

BTW, if you're interested, he's something I read a few short months ago from the Stanford Magazine <http://alumni.stanford.edu/get/page/magazine/article/?article_id=45558>, apropos VHS tapes. It might be of some use to you.

Mostly because they are cheap at Value Village, and are a great cheap way to watch movies. If the movies are any good, keep them.
