As an absolute, it's not a good idea. Not preparing for the future is just asking for trouble.
The best thing is really to be able to "live in the moment" temporarily, to be able to recognize when you can just not worry about the past or future and have fun, and to manage your time around it well.

"Virtue, Jacques, is an excellent thing. Both good people and wicked people speak highly of it..."
The idea is that neither the past nor the future exist, in a way, both because you can't interact with them as you can the present, and because the past is distorted by the way our memories work while the future is just some fantasy we know little about. This current moment is the only thing that's really here, the only place you exist. To realise all this and fully come into the moment, be present in it, notice your breathing and activity, and accept that this is life. People are so very often stuck planning their futures in front of them, or staying stuck in some past moment. Or in the words of Yoda: "Always has he looked away, to the future, to the horizon; never his mind on where he was, what he was doing." We need to truly experience and appreciate the reality of the present, because life isn't just those few big occasions we set up for ourselves.
As for how to go about doing it, try just doing one thing and paying full attention to it. For example, I've chosen to shave with a straight razor in part so I can force myself to pay strict attention to what I'm doing every other day. Or it might be cooking, or walking, or anything, really. Get fully into that experience, the feel of the spoon in your hand, the sensation of stepping on the ground, the way water feels against your skin. Breathing is a good one, too, where you don't change how you're breathing, but you simply notice it, feel the air of each breath coming and going, let that consume your whole consciousness.

My anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours! EXPLAIN THAT!
1) Worrying about the past is pointless because it's already happened. You can't undo what's been done. You can learn from your mistakes, and take these lessons with you so that you don't repeat them, but dwelling on the past adds stress and accomplishes nothing. Living in the past is a net negative way to live one's life.
2) Worrying about the future is pointless because it is either uncertain if it will ever transpire, or it is certain and inevitable. In the first case (uncertain future), you'll either end up worrying about something that never comes to pass and have stressed about nothing, or it'll happen and your situation then will be no better for all the worrying you did. In the second case (certain future), your worrying about it cannot change the outcome and you'll miss out on the enjoyment to be had in the mean time. Sure, you can do things to prepare to the future, but worrying will not help you or accomplish much of anything. Living in the future is a net negative way to live life.
I guess another way to put this is "Don't worry, be happy!"

"For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love." --Carl Sagan
Take it one step at a time. Don't think about all the things you've done in the past, the people you've hurt, the stupid things you've said, the missed opportunities and whatever it may be that plagues one's conscious mind. We can better ourselves every day or we can make ourselves worse. It's entirely up to you. Don't think. Do.

I have the same thing about worrying about all the negative stuff and worrying about the future but I find that focusing on the positive things that happen in a day works on getting your mind of the future and past
Yeah i think it's a "take one step at a time" thing. It's one thing to just wing it and flail around because "it's all going to fall into place" and another to "keep a watchful eye of your goals and try to reach them within your means."
Hmmm.... I'm not sure but, you need to live in all places simultaneously to completely understand how to make correct decisions and have the most attune perception to reality and what actually happens. I recommend reading books on decisions and consequences such as Unintended Consequences by John Ross, The 48 Laws of Power by Robert GreeneThe art of seduction by Robert Greene and Joost Elffers, and Best Laid Plans: The Theory of Unintended Consequences and how to avoid them by William Sherden. In addition to this, which will suppliment your knowledge, make a effort to watch the news, look at the paper, online articles, and other forms of direct press. If you are in an industry be intune with their press releases and business statements of corporate giants. If you go to school, make a point to be in direct contact with management and head staff. I personally do not play the part of "brown noser". I think there are too many social stigmas and reprecussions with it. Instead, I ask though provoking questions at times when we are talking about semi related things. For instance today we were learning about wells and Hydrology. I built up more rapport with one of my professors after class when I asked him if the Coriolis effect changes how we should withdraw water from wells to which he replied "thats a good question, I have no idea, I'll get back to you" which is a great response.
Be Friendly as much as possible. Hold doors most of the time. Keep your head cool and always be polite in bad situations especially if physical. It makes you look better and when the dust settles you will probabaly win in the eyes of the other people.
Living in the moment is only possible once you understand the past and the present because then and only then with education, will opportunities present themselves. To take one from Two-Face, Make your own luck.
Now happiness is different from this. What I told you before is the sorta "How". It's not the full how because I can't explain the full how. All I know is the key to being happy most is fulfillment. Look into Maslow's hierarchy of needs pyramid and see where you are. Perhaps you are not happy because something is preventing you from attaining what you want. Life is full of obstacles but the only thing you can actually do is get through it or give up.
The only way I have found that I am truly happy is when I have nothing to do for anyone else but me. Then and only than can I focus on the stuff that I "want" to do such as paint and write. Sometimes, I feel that Magic is a chore, but I do play test frequently to keep myself as well as my teammates practiced.
I also look at time very differently than a lot of people. It is weird, but it is sort of my "religion", though in the eyes of the USA I am a catholic.
1st, I believe I am not going to die in the next 5 years. Ever.
2nd, I believe everything is a balance and just a matter of sacrifices. If you want really nice things just sacrifice other things.
3rd, I assume everything that I perceive as true until I am told differently by what I understand.
4th I believe I can do and learn anything if enough time is put in.
5th, I believe I shouldn't have help. That being said, I almost always take it when the opportunity presents itself.
6th, I believe everyone is my equal just they put their time in different places. Just because a person can't read doesn't mean they don't understand more than you. Some of the most important things I have learned came from a man two men who couldn't read or write. One was my grandfather and the other was a homeless man.
7th, I believe that humans should only sleep when tired.
8th, I believe that humans should be allowed to do what ever they want to their own bodies.
9th, I believe you can never trust individuals in a mass group of people rallying behind a single cause.
10th, I believe in Due Diligence. Following up. And making sure what I want done is done.
I hope that helped. Also these are just a few of the rules which I generally follow. I also write down my life daily and frequently self reflect to get an understanding on who I actually am, what I actually want to do, and how I am going to do it. Currently I have no why and that bothers me. A lot of the time I feel like I am moving through motions. Thatss usually when I do something spontaneous.
yeah - obviously I disagree with you, John. Spam Warning!.....Amazing - even in a forum where posts don't count, there's spam. That proves that getting rid of the post-count won't help getting rid of spam! Thans for this excellent example! - Craven
Best to keep your eyes on the future with your feet planted firmly in the present. Take what positives you can from your past experiences and learn from your mistakes. Do not, however, dwell upon them. What has happened has happened and there is no going back.
i have heard that a key to hapiness is only living in the present.
but try as i might, i cant wrap my head around this concept.

That only works if you're not responsible for anyone or anything else.
If you have responsibilities (sich as putting kids through school, you're a politicina with constituents, teachers, etc), "only living in the present" is just asking for trouble. And, well, a lot of people _like_ responsibility.
If you're single and only responsible for yourself, go ahead, have a blast.

I have also heard a lot about happiness. I have deduced there is no one key to happiness, but rather several strategies you can use to try and achieve as much happiness as possible.
To "live in the moment" means to appreciate what you have in front of you. It can also mean live it up now. To some, it means do something crazy and fun. To others it means recognise that your breathing and how special the life you have is. It has several connotations.
In addition, when you live in the moment you aren't concentrating on any of your worries from the past or things to worry about in the future. So you're supposed to have no worries when you live in the moment
