Oh, with the "ending horribly" part I meant when the Tyrells initially allied with Renly Baratheon of all people.
At best, this makes the Lannisters never truly trust the Tyrells because the Tyrells supported Renly first. Plus everyone will think the Tyrells want nothing but power and are willing to ignore actual blood-right to achieve it (if you don't believe the bastard rumors, then Joffrey is clearly the rightful king. If you do believe in it, then Stannis is. As Olenna said in the show, supporting Renly never made much sense outside of a pure power-grab scheme).
I'm sure Olenna wouldn't have had a problem if the Tyrells immediately went to Joffrey with a marriage alliance. And when she saw how much of a monster Joffrey is, it does make sense that she would do something about it.
