Hypothesis: the secret is that the Doctor started the Time War.
Quite possible, although if true I doubt it would be an intentional action on his part.
I've seen speculation that the "secret past doctor" (John Hurt) is really the ninth doctor, making Eccleston the 10th etc. Would go a long way toward explaining why Eccleston's doctor was so... brooding? Kind of...
Although at this point, if what the doctor did isn't completely and horribly out of character I'll be a little let down. I'm thinking something on the scale of the stuff the master did/does.
On that thought... could it be related to the master?

He's still the same person, so there at least has to be a very good explanation for why he did whatever he did.
The real sad thing is that if not for 9 being pissed at RTD and not coming back for the anniversy special we'd have seen Eccleston at the end of the last episode and it would have had him slightly retconned into not being "The Doctor" for part of his regeneration
That's where I thought the scene was going at first: a reveal that the Master was the Doctor.
I don't think it could be *that* severe, but it potentially be something about him intentionally helping the master do something... bad... in exchange for the masters help in ending the time war (yes, we don't know that the master helped with that, as far as I'm aware we don't know that he didn't either).

Going by the reaction the master had to Rassilon coming back it is safe to ay he was not involved in the end of the time war.
I think in a behind the scenes bit done for BBC3 over here Russell T Davies did confirm the Master was not arround for the end of the Time war. Granted Moffat might change all of that.

From memory, I believe the Doctor had something to do with starting the Time War.
In the old series, he was sent by the Time Lords to try and stop the creation of the Daleks. Then again a few more times to stop their progress and exterminate them. This may have well started the Time War, but I can't remember if it was ever mentioned in any series.

That would have been cool, but I also think the idea of there being an entire secret regeneration is a really great hook.
It clearly isn't. It was my suspicion before John Hurt showed his face and the credits identified him as "The Doctor". Besides, it would make no sense in the light of the way the Doctor and the Master have interacted in the past. IIRC they mention "growing up together".

Yes, they grew up on Gallifrey together and took the Time Vortex training together (as mentioned in The Sound of Drums). The Master went mad at that time, gradually getting worse.
I'm hoping for a female Doctor at one point (hopes for Helen Mirren). It's possible to change gender and even race during regeneration.

I'm not opposed to a female doctor, but it would certainly take some adjusting.
I think the closest we'll get to a female doctor (at least for a while) is the DoctorDonna
I am just pissed that I have to wait until November with this massive cliffhanger. My wife doesn't want to watch any of the episodes until they are all available at once. I have been chomping at the bit to talk about this series with her and I thought once this episode came out we could watch them together and have a good time of it. But then they make this last episode a 2 parter with a 6 month gap.
I could have not told her that it was a 2 parter, but then she would have glomped me. She is still upset, but at least it is at Moffet and not me.

Wasn't Chiwetel Ejiofor on the short list for the Eleventh Doctor?
Dame Helen is possibly my favorite leading actress (RED 2 woot!), but it under no circumstances would it be her. She's a film actress, and she's too old for the part - regenerations of the Doctor are getting progressively younger. Think more towards Britain's up-and-coming female talent.
Ooh... Gemma Arterton. *eyes glaze over*

One thing that will bother me is that I pray that the next doctor won't as douchie as the Sixth (personality wise on TV... Completely opposite from what I've gathered in the New Adventure serial's synopsis and tropes).
We'll see him on series 8.
Btw, is Moffat leaving when?!? After Series 8 or before or something?
Both the 10th and 11th have had times when they came right up to the edge (or even crossed it) of no longer being "The Doctor". Tennant's Doctor arguably had a number times when he crossed the line, but it was especially highlighted in the last few episodes of his run. Matt Smith's Doctor was much less so, but even he had the episode where he was going to kill the Star Whale commenting "and then I'll have to find a new name because I won't be The Doctor anymore".
It seems that Moffat (BBC, or even Matt) has once again ask the Comic Con audience not to reveal the 50th anniversary trailer. It seems that they're too to upheld that vow.... Again... :/
It seems that Moffat (or maybe Matt) asked the Comic Con audience not revealing the 50th Anniversary. Like "The Name of the Doctor," it seems that they'll do it.

I rather think its about *how* he did it. Or something in connection with that, not that he did it specifically.
But, I've been surprised before so...

I don't mind River Song, but she is just a holographic projection now.
