Firefly
Arrested Development
Battlestar Galactica
Dexter (when it was on there)
Tried to watch and didn't like:
Stargate Atlantis
Mad Men
Lost (I watched a couple seasons back when it was on TV, just no desire to watch the whole series)
So, any suggestions?
Also, I think it is really stupid that companies try to scam you into paying for extra time. For example, with netflix if you cancel your recurring subscription anytime during the time you have already payed for, they take away your subscription immediately (even though you have already payed for it). Or for x-box live which I cancelled recently, you have to actually call microsoft to cancel, you can't do it online. They all just want people to forget to cancel and get stuck with a bill.
Doctor Who
Futurama
South Park
Family Guy
The Tudors (I think it's still on there, you might not like it. I had to stop watching it because it just got silly)
I'm trying to think of what shows they have and guessing at what you might like. But you've already watched Firefly, which is my favorite show EVAR and I was terribly upset when it got cancelled.

I wish I could remember more of what is on there. There are a LOT of good series. The rating thing works well, to the point where after watching hundreds of videos over a few years my recommendations are pretty spot on.
Not sure it's the kind of "series" you're looking for, but they've got most of Top Gear and a fair bit of Mythbusters available for streaming. My other favorites, I think people have already mentioned.
More than one person has already suggested it, but I must stress is further: Breaking Bad. It's pretty awesome.
Consider checking out the anime section, if you're into that. High School of the Dead is pretty good, though they go a tad overboard with fan service. Gungrave is amazing. I'm told Claymore is absolutely fantastic as well.
A lot of people don't like these shows, but I'm a fan of The Office and Parks and Recreation. I suggest giving them a shot; they're not interchangeable, so don't judge one based on the other. Very different shows.

Everything I listed is available on-demand with Netflix.
They're fairly good, the first one just has a team going around in a Vietnam like setting and the other deals with international politics surrounding large solar panels that power a post oil world and the controls over that. I think you might have a connection with that one with the environmental and war themes since you're a leftist. 08th Team is short enough to probably watch in a day or week, while 00 is like 50 episodes. I'd consider Seed, but it's too much like Stargate Atlantis meets Melrose Place. If the episode has Kira and Flay in it talking, just fast forward it, makes it less teen drama oriented and more palatable. A few of the supporting cast are interesting enough as well that in a way I wish they had more screen time than the Flay and Kira romance reminded me of a ****ing teen drama. Destiny you'd probably hate. As for the original you might like it, but I'd watch those two first since the original is loooooooooooooooooonnnggg. Skip Wing unless if someone starts to mention the word "pacificism" hit the fast forward button by about 5 minutes.
Darker than Black has some interesting plot twists and such for a Japanese cartoon, is more adult oriented as well and still Science Fiction. Eureka 7 was cute, but it has a teen romance to it and might not be your fortay.
Star Trek DS9 is about as close as Star Trek gets to BSG as it actually goes to war and deals with the issues of war and a genetically engineered army. Equally this is where Moore got his start at with writing, well more like Star Trek TNG which is equally as good but also DS9 where he took the lead in the creative direction. There's a book that also concludes it that should've been a movie, but they never made it into a movie and it's not exactly canon but it concludes the series satisfactorily. Voyager is alright if you like more of the original exploration bit. Seven of Nine at the start can be annoying, but as time goes on and they give her a bit more depth you see Ryan's acting ability. Favorite episode of hers was when she had all those people's memories in her head and she was acting as different characters in a span of like 5-10 minutes.
The HBO mini series on Adams is fairly decent and well done, plus Adams smart assness comes off quite well.
Outer Limits is fairly good, can otherwise catch that on Hulu. I prefer the 1990's version over the original. While the Twilight Zone the oldest are the best. Hitchock Presents is always something nice to watch during October. There's a few dystopian episodes you could click through.
I still prefer Hulu and youtube>Netflix, but those are the the rest. I watched Fate Stay Night on a whim last few months ago, it was actually rather entertaining. Murder Princess recently watched that on youtube, was something different but weird for a short series.
If you want something more academic, CSPAN video has Book TV and can plug in if someone comes up. Q@A and Afterwords are good enough to watch if you're interested in politics enough. Washington Journal isn't bad daily to watch some of the interviews. GPS with Fareed Zakaria is on CNN tomorrow can also catch that up on the web. I feel that he's probably the best replacement since Russert died.
Considering you're a leftist, I think you might like this episode of After Words about the history of the right in America:
Baccano! It's anime, 13 eps of story, 3 eps of afterwards/fillers.

Breaking Bad is on Netflix right now. I've been watching it, it is completely fantastic. Also, I think that at this point all of the Star Trek series are on there.
Walking Dead, Tutors, No Reservations, Man Vs Food, Ramsey's Best Restaurant, Futurama, Dead Like Me, IT Crowd
Funny thing is, my wife and I cancelled Netflix not more than a month ago and guess what where watching right now as I type... yeah we came back with our tail between our legs. Sometimes you just need a break!
Hulu is pretty good as well... It has a ton of great shows on it, but is aimed a lot more reality tv shows, but on the plus has a ton of great UK tv on it.
House, Fringe, Black Books, Green Wing, Whites, Dresden Files...
Not sure how you utilize Youtube to watch TV Shows and Movies because everything is stripped off there the second it comes up now with a banning.
If you mean Youtube user generated content then I agree that it is good though :D.
The Anime I mentioned, I know at least recently Darker Than Black is on Hulu and Youtube from the American distributors to bypass the illegal uploads and recoup money via advertising costs online.
I'll add in Death Note as well, it's dark and gritty without being cartoonish.

um.. Realizing now that quite a few weren't watched on nf, heh. Still, I enjoyed those four. There are probably a couple okay nostalgic shows (personally x-files, though I only watched a season or two, I may watch some again, mostly because I remember it fondly).
That's just the thing. If you have half a brain and any taste at all then it is very likely that everything you'd like to watch has already been cancelled.
Dr.Who is the only TV worth watching until Game of Thrones comes back next April. Is GoT on Netfix? Watch that if you can. Or even better, read the book...then watch it.
Is GoT on Netfix? Watch that if you can. Or even better, read the book...then watch it.
Nope, HBO has this horrible trend of releasing the previous season to DVD and Netflix only when the new season is about to release. So that means we likely won't have it until next Spring when Season 2 hits.
I've pretty much decided to get rid of streaming. They don't have anything I really want to see on there, nothing brand new, and I don't have time or desire to watch random wouldbe/shouldbe shows.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
