so it was announced today that Las Vegas will be getting an NHL Team starting in the 2017-2018 team. being the first major league to have a team in the city
We knew it was probably between Vegas, Seattle and Quebec City getting a team. The inbalance between the conferences, difficulty of bringing in 2 teams at the same time and the weak Canadian dollar were what cost Quebec City the team
It will massively struggle like the teams in Nashville, Phoenix, and Florida. Vegas is a city of short attention spans and tourist traps, and hockey just isn't enough to consistently bring people to the game. The warm weather also plays hell with the ice (as shown during the Stanley Cup when hot temperatures in San Jose turned the ice into slush). It will be a nice gimmick for a couple years, and then they will relocate either to Quebec or another Canadian city when the Canadian dollar improves.

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

yeah that's an interesting way to look at it, I can't see hockey being the first thing that people in Vegas care about, especially in the warm climate. There'll probably be some novelty value in having a new/first team but I dunno
I wouldn't mind getting a new Canadian team though

Ugh, I'm sorry I didn't see this thread sooner.
As much as I'd like to see a team back in Quebec or Hamilton, you just know that Seattle is going to get the first crack at a new/relocated franchise because money.
Regarding the success of the Vegas team, I don't expect them to be relevant for at least the first three or four years, just because they have to skate out an expansion roster (i.e., the unprotected table scraps of the rest of the league) for the first few seasons.
