Not sure if I'm watching The Walking Dead (in all sorts of ways) or the world cup, but it is what it is. Italy has been very poor this time around - I can't remember being less excited about an edition of the Italian national team than I have been now, so I suppose it's fine that they get eliminated. But if Suarez isn't banned from the rest of the world cup, I will be fairly upset.
I'm not happy that Greece got through. The team I'm rooting the most for is the team that is facing Greece at any point. Greece represents anti-football in my mind, and I hope Costa Rica gives them a proper thrashing. The prospect of having Greece or Costa Rica for sure in one of the quarterfinals is pretty baffling to me, by the way.
Anyway, congrats to Mondragon - one of the players I remember from the 1998 World Cup, and at 43 years old he's the oldest player ever at the world cup. He even had a very good save in the last seconds of the match
Bad penalty call........ will be debated for days .....
Greece in fairness ripped two shots off the bar
How's it bad? A referee actually made the correct call in a match deciding moment like he should any other time. Sio clipped the back of the Samaras's heal while the Greek player was in a clear position to take a shot on goal. It caused him to lose balance and not be able to make a play on the ball. Clear penalty.
I also agree having Greece advance is a bad thing stylistically for a great World Cup so far. So I definitely was not rooting for them.
I also was not rooting for Italy until after the Suarez biting incident. Before that, I thought Marchisio being sent off was a lame call though. Watch FIFA screw it up and find some way of not kicking Suarez out of the tournament.
Perhaps, it's extremely difficult when on the run and planting a foot and someone is winding back not to have incidental contact. I am happy Greece went through, but no matter which way it spun, its controversial and a crappy way to lose a game. I have yet to hear anyone say anything other than it was a "tough" call. Often a sign that commentators disagree. Plus, as we have seen in soccer all the time, refs call it how they want to call it. Refereeing is very subjective as is the application of the rules.
That all said, time to move on to the next bit of controversy
I have seen far blatant calls "missed" inside the penalty area where players were literally thrown to the ground by the opposing player who wasn't even going for the ball.
If Suarez plays another game this World Cup cycle, it will be a black mark they won't be able to erase. UEFA and The FA should step in as well. I don't care what the excuse is, it's not good enough for not delivering a now VERY CLEAR message to Suarez that this behaviour is NOT okay.
3 strikes and you're out is hopefully the call with Suarez. Biting is just ridiculous and saying it's just something that happens on the field is the lamest excuse
What I don't get about Suarez is that this attitude is so... unnecessary.
He's easily among the best forward players out there, there was absolutely no need for him to do this. Not once, not twice, absolutely not three times.
Still, I'm happy for Uruguay for the win. Just lamenting that they could have gotten a clean and nice win, instead of one tarnished by this.

I rolled 5 D6's and got 3 fours. They must have changed the odds of getting a 4!
Muntari & Boateng have been sent home after a couple of training ground incidents including Muntari allegedly slapping a member of Ghana's management team.
Hopefully this improves the US chances by hurting Ghana's
I'm also rooting for the US (for the reasons I mentioned a couple of pages ago - no moaning at the refs or getting killed every time they're near an opposing player), but this is not the sort of news that makes me happy.
At first the news site I was reading said 9 matches, and I thought that was surprisingly mild, but then it updated with the "4 months from all football-related activities" thing. Well, I think that is certainly sufficiently harsh.
Yeah, I also was surprised when I first read "9 games". Don't forget that there's the monetary fine and that "all football-related activities" also applies to setting foot in a stadium.
Yes thank you CR7. Kills us the cross of the tournament in the 95th minute only to turn around and bring us back to life in the 80th minute vs. Ghana.
The 20 minute stretch from after Germany scoring and Ghana tying Portugal was absolutely brutal as a USA fan. Our history told us to expect that Ghana goal to come and knock us out.
USA has been kind of defying odds a bit, maybe this is the year for a deep run?
Belgium has looked uninspired in group play, and while group play is not much at all to go after, the pundits are stating that the US being more of a "team" will help them out vs Belgium which is a group of great individual players.

In all reality, I think he got off real easy considering FIFA by all rights could have suspended him for 2 years (And had the justification to do so.)
I almost want to see Mexico beat the Netherlands if only to see their manager's reaction
CONCACAF Pride 2014.
Ivory Coast bottled it and Greece is through.

Certainly seems a good wager now!
It was a penalty, you're not allowed to impede the progress of a kicking motion, intentional or not.
