Mmm.. Perhaps I was wrong. It looks like there might be a 6th team after all. Hopefully they can get on the ball enough to get the 6th team to play next season.
Now if only they can get a better tv deal. Ideally one that gets better viewership than vs. and one which pays them instead of them needing to pay the network to cover them.

That's funny, because I was contemplating using Memphis for a city as well.
So I have a question: What happens with season ticket holders? Since season tickets are paid for several months in advance, what happens to the money you pay up front if the season gets canceled? Do you get refunded the payment (maybe at least part of it?) or does the team just pocket it?
Acorrding to a yahoo article today, the Raiders are getting their stadium renamed to Overstock.com Coliseum, with the possibilty of going to O.co Coliseum if Overstock.com changes their name. I only bring this up because of this note...
"The whole naming deal may be a gross miscalculation by Overstock.com, as it presupposes that Raiders fans know how to use the Internet and/or have a credit card. (Kidding. The biggest obstacle will be getting past the prison's web filters.)"
I couldn't stop laughing. I know its a sterotype, but I didn't expected it.
Well, the 2nd and 3rd round sure was upsetting for me. another WR and RB.
Does Mayhew NOT understand we need a god damn secondary?!?!?! or another offensive lineman??
Looking back on last season would you really call the Lion's running back situation ideal? Best was always playing hurt and the running game never seemed good enough to where getting another RB who can stay healthy and contribute would be a bad thing. The lions really needed a compliment to Calvin as well. What if Calvin had to miss several games due to injury? Who is going to pick up the slack? Nate Burleson and Bryant Johnson aren't exactly forces to be reckoned with.
I'm not saying there aren't bigger needs right now on that team, but you can't fault the scouts/schwartz/mayhew for seeing those offensive players as having the most talent and being the best options for their team at that moment. Locking yourself into drafting by position only isn't always the way to go: i.e. Minnesota drafting Christian Ponder at 12th...
Drafting Fairly will make their current secondary have an easier time so in that sense they did work there. FA should help a little until next year. This is still a team being rebuilt from the Millen days, but they are on the right track.

I actually think Detroit had one of the better drafts (if not the best from a pure player and value perspective). They took the best players available and why not addressing their weaknesses they instead strengthen their strengths. They now probably have the scariest D-Line in the league and now have the offensive strength to compete with both Chicago and Green Bay. You have too look at it this way, the Lions are most likely going to be a brink team this year at best as they still need at least another good draft and/or a great free agency period to be a true contending team. Schwartz knows this and that is why a lot of the moves make sense to me. This draft was about long term growth, not filling needs. Plus I expect them trying to get at least one of each of LB, CB, and OL in free agency if it happens.
Green Bay had a solid draft, nothing flashy, but they didn't need flashy they needed solid and they got it. Scarily I expect them to be much better this year than last.
Chicago had a solid draft and their was only one questionable pick in my mind, Nathan Enderle, but I understand it. He is part project, part third QB behind Cutler and Hanie, part way to want Martz to stick around (much more likely to stay if he has a pet project Qb to work on). I personally preferred LaFevour from last year before he got swiped by the Bengals as I actually thought LaFevour while maybe never being elite could be in the "solid" Kyle Orton/Chad Pennington class of QB's. Gabe Carimi was a steal when they got him (despite the trade fiasco) and automatically upgrades the O-Line. Paea is also a great grab and is a player that while not being the next Tommie Harris is a player that has the drive to be a great line man next to Idonije and Peppers and be that disruptive force that allows Pep to stop being double/tripple teamed. Conte is a pick that originally I thought could be better spent on CB, but the more I thought about it the more I liked it. Safety is a needed depth position and he has the potential to be a strong starter at Free Safety in a year or two. James Thomas is a project LB for the Bears in my opinion, but he has everything you like to see in a LB and has to potential to play in any LB position, which is exactly what you want to see in a project LB that will probably start out as a special teams/back-up LB.
CB and more OLine is something that I think will be tried to be addressed via free agency for the Bears, who have had fair success via free agency lately. WR is actually something that I knew and didn't really think was a great need for the Bears. Knox is a great stretch receiver and Earl Bennett is one of the best route runners out there in my opinion and has sure hands (plus great chemistry with Cutler), plus they have Andy Fauntz from the CFL under a futures contract and I think he has the potential (from what I've seen) to be the power type of reciever that the Bears like. Not to mention a great receiving TE in Greg Olsen. This would also push Hester back into more of the Return game which is always good. So unless a great WR free agent is out there I don't think it is something they are going to address this year.
Minnesota's draft while they had some good picks was a little too desperate. Is Christian Ponder a good QB, yes, but not a Pick 12 QB. Though then again I didn't really like the following QB's: Cam Newton, Blain Gabbert, Ryan Mallet, Jake Locker. I personally was not too high on most of the top QB's going into this draft, and felt if you were wanting a QB, get one like Ricky Stanzi (who personally I think is the hidden gem in this QB class) in round 2 or 3. At the very worse I would get one that might take a year or two to develop and go out and get a veteran like McNabb or Hasselback. I know the Vikings think they are built to win now, but the problem I see is that there isn't a top level QB in this draft that is built to win now.
Also I know that most will probably disagree with me, but I actually think Joe Webb is a solid QB if you play to his strengths. He is like Vick light and can cause a lot of problems if he gets out of the pocket. And if they can't get a veteran QB I think they are better of playing Webb for a year than throwing Ponder into the fire right away.
Minnesota isn't a team built to win now without getting a free agent QB to run the show until Ponder is ready. And even with a FA QB I still think they will probably be last in the NFC North again this year.
Besides being entirely voluntary, something that they wanted to do, not-race based, the fact that they're able to leave whenever they want with no legal consequences and making a fortune, I totally see their point. Besides those things, the NFL is totally a parallel of slavery.

I was talking (arguing?) with a friend of mine earlier about which likely free agent/likely to be traded/cut QB's you would prefer to have on your team for this coming season.
He said Kolb, listing things like potential and all that, whereas I said Orton. He sort of looked at me like I was crazy and said why would I want Orton when he will never be elite. I basically said that while Orton will probably never be elite, he also probably will never be the reason your team sucks. Orton is consistent and is able to pick up new systems fairly easily. He is a low drama option who is in the prime of his career and if you can build a team around him he can take you to the Superbowl.
Kolb is unproven for the most part and I think there is too much hype around him, plus I think you would have to give up way too much to get him. McNabb has baggage and I feel spent to long in Andy Reid's system and has trouble playing in any other. Vince Young is Vince Young, 'nuff said. Carson Palmer is on the downside of his career and has never been back to his elite levels since his injury. Rex Grossman probably has the most upside, but at the same time the most downside, as he sometimes plays elite while other times plays like an injured Todd Collins.
Kolb's games in Philly were impressive for the most part and is a great prospect for any team. I can see either side to the Orton/Kolb discussion. If a team just needs a temp holder then Orton seems like a fine guy. You don't need to be elite to improve a football team.
IM also on the fence in the Kolb v Orton debate. Kolb probably has more upside, but with Orton you know what you're going to get. Not a superstar but a Brad Johnson type QB that will be fairly consistent with his play. Vince Young is available though you never know what you'll get out of that headcase. Matt Flynn could be a dark horse to get a job somewhere. Donovan McNabb (while more costly) may be the best choice if you have a team (like say MIN or AZ) with some offensive weapons already in place. As was stated, Palmer just hasnt been the same since his injuries. Matt Hasselbeck is another Orton type worth considering, though he has had recent injury concerns

My main problem with McNabb is I think he has great talent, but I don't think he can play outside of Andy Reid's offense. And without Brad Childress I think McNabb could be worse than Brett Favre was this past year in MIN, especially if Rice leaves.
My main concern with Hasselbeck is age and injury. I think he is a great QB, but I see him maybe having two more years left in him and I am not sure what those two years will look like.
Also I have to think with Kolb you have to look at the system he comes from. The Eagles are a QB friendly offense in that they have great receivers and a great running back. What happens if you put him in an offense that isn't so friendly, like ARI which only has Fitzgerald or Miami who I am not sure what is going to be left.
VY I think is done as a starter. He needs a strong running game to compliment his abilities and even then you get a QB product that can be as swingy as Rex Grossman without the elite potential upside. And this doesn't even take into consideration his attitude.
I didn't think about it before, but honestly Kyle Orton to Seattle makes a lot of sense, which is why it won't happen.
No offense to Hasselbeck but there are just too many questions about his health and the fact I expect him to retire if not this season then next. Kyle Orton I think would be a huge upgrade at QB and I think Seattle is a place that if they build around him they can come back to prominence. If Orton went to Seattle I think he would be their franchise QB for the next eight years give or take one or two.
I think the thing that always got with Orton is that everybody wants an elite QB, but unless you are lucky or have some ungodly ability to foresee franchise QB's I think you would be better off getting a QB who is at the Orton or Pennington level who will never be elite, but will probably never be the reason your team sucks (i.e. this years Denver Broncos) and build around him as your future.
Well the NFL sure isnt going to make this year's installment of MTGS Fantasy Football easy for me to get off the ground (assuming we even have a season). Im debating on whether or not I should sent out PM's just in case. If the season ends up at least 12 games I'll go ahead and run them, but for an 8 game season there's really no point (5 game regular season. 2-3 week playoff)
I just activated the WTF-FL for the season. I'm just assuming we'll have some sort of season, and I'll start asking for newbies to join shortly. Our current draft is scheduled for Saturday, August 20th, 9pm eastern time.
That, of course, is most likely to be pushed back with the chance of a late start to the season.
There's just about a month left until training camps start. The upcoming season is looking really grim right about now, considering both parties are still in talks. Don't they realize just how close the upcoming season is?
Invitations for the 2011-2012 Season of MTGS Fantasy Football have been sent out. Anyone who did not receive an invite can PM me and request one. Previous participants are guaranteed a spot upon reply. After that it's first come first serve but I will make as many leagues as needed to accommodate as many people as possible
I loved FF last year even though I sucked at it. who knows, maybe I'll be better this time?
Consider me in unless I say otherwise. Can't wait until thursday!

The draft sure did take a good deal of time last night. but heck, it's primetime. who cares, right?
with Atlanta upgrading to 6th pick, and grabbing Julio Jones, I was surprised. But yeesh their offense is going to look meaner than last year.
I'm happy with our (Lions) pick; Nick Fairly DT, (AUB) Our defense is getting great up front, we just need to get some damn CBs and Safetys
My team(Seattle) was pretty boring.
