Anyone reading this? I am pretty far behind (just finished #2), but it seems cool so far. I've been trying to read some of the tie-ins, but I don't think I'll get them all. Any suggestions for the best or most important ones?
It's been awhile since I've really followed the Avengers, so there are a ton of characters I don't know. Also, I have a question about the Infinity Gems:

How did they break?
I'm reading it, and it's the first Marvel Event since World War Hulk that I have loved pretty unreservedly. Relatively few tie-ins and a well-plotted arc that ties into what was happening in Avengers AND New Avengers.
As for tie-ins, the important ones are listed at the back of every book: Avengers and New Avengers. Don't bother with any of the other tie-ins, except maybe Mighty Avengers which is starting during the Infinity event. Thankfully, this is turning out to be a lot more self contained than the other 'events'.
You may also want to read the current runs of both Avengers and New Avengers by Jonathon Hickman, since the Infinity Event is literally the culmination of the last year of both of those comics (since he took over Avengers duties). Your question is answered during the current run of New Avengers. Since both books have only been around about a year, it's worth picking up the trades for them. Hickman is a great writer. But, if you must know:
New Avengers covers the incursion of alternate Earths into ours, which require the destruction of one of the planets. In an attempt to avoid having to destroy the alternate Earths, the New Avengers (aka the Illuminati) use the gems to try and push the other universes away, but since the gems only work on and in our universe, they break in the attempt, with the time gem simply disappearing.
I think the book is doing a great job at bringing Thanos in for a casual audience. He's a major player in the Marvel Universe, but he's been largely forgotten outside of the cosmic side of things the last ten years.
I got Mighty Avengers #1-3, but I've only read the first one. It was the best comic I've read in awhile, aside from maybe Daredevil, which is consistently good even after 2 years. I really liked the humor in Mighty. I think I've decided to drop Superior Spider-Man, so this might be a good replacement.
I'm already getting the Avengers and New Avengers tie-ins. I tried reading the Infinity mini by itself, but got a little lost. The extra issues really filled in the gaps. From what I've read, the other tie-ins like Heist and Hunt are fairly standalone and not necessary for the main story.
Thanks for the spoiler. I've decided not to read it for now, because I may end up reading the story from the beginning. If the build-up is as good as what I've read so far, it seems like it will be worth the read.

Marvel's best writers right now are Jonathan Hickman - who does a great job at laying a foundation for future stories - and Matt Fraction, who has penned individual series for two lesser known members of the marvel U: Iron Fist and Hawkeye, and knocked both out of the ball park. His Iron Man stuff isn't quite as good.
It also seems like Superior Spider-man is about to come to a head what with:
Parker's Cop Girlfriend finally figuring out Doc Ock has taken over Peter.
I'm glad, because as much as I enjoy Superior, there is only so much farther they can take the concept.
Finally. Carlie's and MJ's suspicions were about the only reason I was still interested. I want the Superior story to end or at least the Amazing to return.
Oh, and apparently I'm not dropping the title since they just auto-renewed my subscription last night or today. Oh well.

Yeah, literally at the end of the last episode:
Carly and Wraith took down this major criminal banker, and saw that the funds for Spider-Island came from Doc Ock's bank account.
