Hey guys! I am veryinterested in reading a detailed account of the Seige of Dol Goldur. Can anyone tell me what text it can be found in? I have read Hobbit, LotR and the Silmarillion extensively and they only mention it in passing, if at all.
Also, Are any of the Lost Tales books actually written by Tolkien? The cover is misleading. It seems so at first, but when I scan it more it seems like his son may have written them based off his notes. There are several events I would like to read about in more detail, but I prefer it from his own hand.
The most detailed account of the battle of Dol Goldur that exists can be found in the appendices of LoTR. There is no more detailed account.
The works by Christopher Tolkien are essentially from his father's own hand. The notes JRR left are extremely extensive- we're talking tens of thousands of pages. Christopher's work has basically been only to organize the ideas in a coherent order and in some cases adapt more academic passages into a narrative - but he's as pure a purist as they get- he hates even the slightest deviation from his father's intentions and ideas.

The Seige of Dol Guldor is a bit sketchy. The time lined happened in the hobbit. When they dwarves were in mirkwood.
There was the meeting of the white council. Gandalf had verified the existance of the necromancer which was actually sauron in disguise.
They drove sauron out of mirkwood back to mordor
There is another reference to this as well as there were two battles there.
The final battle happens at the end of the lord of the rings. at the same time of aragorns attack on the black gate Gladerial had lead an attack on dol Guildor and overran the place with a host of elves from the forest.

The actual battles themselves are referenced but not actually gone into detail.
There was the battle at the lonely mountain between the dwarves men of dale and orcs.
I do believe it was Dain the II was killed in the battle but the victory belonged to the dwarves and men.
There was the assault of Dol Guildor by the Elves of the golden forest and the elves of mirkwood lead by galaderial herself.
Then there was the assault of the black gate in mordor.
The only detailed battle was the black gate the others are reference in the appendix and some details given but not the whole story.
