So, I've been reading a ton of high-fantasy lately, and have restarted reading The Dresden Files for like the sixth time. So, I think it's time for something different. I'd like to read some sci-fi, seeing as I've never really gotten into it. I'd also like to read some awesome steampunk novels, maybe even some cyberpunk.
Any recommendations for a few of those genres? Or, when it comes to sci-fi, do I just need to start with Asimov and go on from there?

For some really good sci-fi classics, I really like works by Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Frank Herbert's Dune series is also a classic, but I only recommend the first few books in the series.
Everyone also recommends Neuromancer by William Gibson for some cyberpunk. I haven't gotten to it yet, but it's on my to-read list.
Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, Starship Troopers (so much better/completely different than the movie), Frankenstein, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Rendezvous With Rama (love the concept), I Am Legend (not really my favorite, but there's one scene in it that actually startled me and made me worry for the character- may not sound like much but it was a good scene, lol), any book with the short story Nightfall (by Asimov) in it, Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 2001: A Space Odyssey (I like the book way more than the movie/it's much clearer).
Those are the some of the ones that I both like and show up on this top 100 list I looked at (couldn't think of many off the top of my head). I Am Legend isn't in there because I liked its story, but it evoked an emotional response, so why not. Some people like it.

As for SF... well, there's a lot of SF, in a lot of different subgenres, so I don't know what you'll like. Try using this guide.
