I couldn't think of a song that is better in its cover form off the top of my head. But I do recommend Pat Boone's cover of Holy Diver, cause it's hilarious. Not as good as Dio, but funnier.
Tantric's version of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain is pretty good, not neccessarily "better"

SELVAXRI! King of Misfortune & Master of Rocket Launchers "Do ya feel lucky? Because you'd better start runnin' while you still can." 375 Misfortune {+3 signed AP's} & 104 Rocket Launcher (41 AQ/ 63 Rev) Edgar Rice Burroughs, forgotten legend of the word.
Not sure if it qualifies as a cover, but I love Jimmy Fallon, The Roots, and Carly Rae Jepson covering?/playing an alternate version of Call Me Maybe Kazoos.
No mention of Alien Ant Farm's rendition of "Smooth Criminal?" I love that one.
Just about any Motorhead cover. Metallica's "Enter Sandman" is one of the few songs of theirs that I can still stand to this day, but Lemmy's vocals blow the original out of the water.
It's so hard to choose, but Coalesce's cover of Boysetsfire's "Vehicle" is spectacular.
Austrian Death Machine's cover of "Gotta Go" from Agnostic Front is fantastic in its own way, and in some ways superior too.
I am starting to stray into good covers and not superior versions, but Cancer Bats did a good version of Beasties' "Sabotage."
Honorable mention to Death Cab for Cutie's cover of "Earth Angel."
Honorable mention to Death Cab for Cutie's cover of "Earth Angel."
Another good "golden oldie" cover is "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam, though I don't quite think its better than the original.

yea, that was a good cover of a Roy Orbison classic.

I think Gary Jules version is vastly superior to Tears for Fears. "Welcome to the Machine" on the other hand is another story. I like both versions. I do appreciate how Shadows Fall took a great song and made it their own, which is important to a cover.

Little angel, go away come again some other day the Devil has my ear today I'll never hear a word you say. He promised I would find a little solace and some peace of mind. Whatever. just as long as I don't feel so desperate and ravenous.
I think Gary Jules version is vastly superior to Tears for Fears.
Excellent choice! One that slips under the radar. Admittedly, I didn't know it was a cover when I first heard it (via Donnie Darko).

Yngwie Malmsteen did it too. Great song. Great ax-man.
System of a Down- "Metro"
Johnny Cash- just about any one he ever did
Chris Cornell- "Billie Jean"
Guns & Roses- "Live and Let Die"
Metallica- "Astronomy"
There are some good artists on you tube also. vkgoeswild is pretty good. She does piano covers of all sorts of stuff. Also 331Erock takes things and makes them metal.
On a sidenote, I'd like to hear covers done by Incubus or 311. I believe these bands would do a hell of a job.

"Now you're talking semantics. What if I told you insane was working 50 hours a week in some office for 50 years, at the end of which they tell you to piss off... Ending up in some retirement village, hoping to die before suffering the indignity of trying to make it to the toilet on time. Wouldn't you consider that to be insane?"
"Define Irony: Bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash"
Even though I'm in a different musical solar system than most magic players, here are my additions to the thread:
Iron & Wine's cover of 'Such Great Heights' by The Postal Service. You know this as the M&Ms commercial.
Cat Power's cover of the oldie 'Sea of Love' is amazing. Chan has some heartfelt vocals.
Sufjan Steven's cover of 'You are the Blood" by Castanets takes it up a million notches. Its becomes a 10 minute epic. Oh, the piano towards the end gives me the chills!
Of the 3 the No Quarter cover is probably the most generic/traditional but it is still really good. Remember Tomorrow and Dreamweaver add a hefty dose of New Orleans psychedelia and are really powerful versions. As one poster said I prefer covers to be different, more of a signature of the performing band.
are classics due to the directions they took the songs. They did well known Black Sabbath covers but those were more derivative of the originals and not as dynamically different as the above two covers.
Guns N' Roses did so many great covers both different and derivative. Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Live and Let Die, Hair of the Dog, Sympathy For The Devil, Since I Don't Have You, Ain't It Fun are the best of their bunch with the first two being legendary versions of those songs.

CAMILLA: You, sir, should unmask.
STRANGER: Indeed?
CASSILDA: Indeed it's time. We all have laid aside disguise but you.
STRANGER: I wear no mask.
CAMILLA: (Terrified, aside to Cassilda.) No mask? No mask!
Realistically he should only be unblockable without equipment
Guard 1: There goes a sword floating down the street!
Guard 2: Well, he's unblockable, so ignore it.
Eat your greens kids, omnath does, and it makes him strong....
I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers version of Higher Ground much more than Stevie Wonder's.
Pearl Jam's cover of Last Kiss is also much better than the original. The original is way too upbeat for a song about getting in a car accident and having the person you love die in your arms.
I also perfer Pearl Jam's version of Love Reign O'er Me but that's mostly because I like Vedder's voice much better thand Daltry's.
Pearl Jam actually has a bunch of covers that I like much more than the originals. But I'm a die hard PJ fan so I may be a bit biased.
Wow, so many great covers in this thread that slipped my memory or I didn't know about.
I'll +1 Metallica's versions of "Turn the Page" and "Whiskey in the Jar." Those are just the definitive versions for me.
"Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics has a number of good covers. I think Emily Browning's version is arguably better, especially in the context of the opening scene of "Sucker Punch."
Another song with lots of good covers is "How Soon is Now?" by The Smiths. Love Spit Love probably has the most recognizable version thanks to its use in the movie "The Craft" and the TV show "Charmed." I'm partial to the version by Paradise Lost and even like the version by t.A.T.u..
Cradle of Filth has done a surprising number of solid covers. Among them are "Stay" (originally by Shakespeare's Sister). There's also "Temptation" (originally by Heaven 17).
Jimi Hendrix's covers of "Wild Thing" and "All Along the Watchtower"
Janis Joplin's performance of "Me and Bobby McGee"
Santa Esmerelda's cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"
Johnny Cash doing "Hurt"
The Blind Boys of Alabama doing "I Shall Not Walk Alone"
Jeff Buckley's take on "Hallelujah"
The Clash's version of "I Fought the Law"
Joan Jett's version of "Crimson and Clover"
Them covering "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"
I believe each of these covers surpasses the original version. In many cases, these versions have become the iconic renditions of these tunes. What I really like is when an artist recognizes that someone else has done wonders with their song, as was the case with Trent Reznor and Johnny Cash.
This is what I was gonna say. Never heard that band (or even heard -OF- that band) till that cover, and it was pretty solid.

Edgar Rice Burroughs, forgotten legend of the word.
Streetlight Manifesto covering The Postal Service's Such Great Heights and NOFX's Linoleum
Dan Potthast covering Streetlight Manifesto's A Moment of Silence(but honestly I kinda like all the songs he did better than the originals).
Laura Stevenson covering Bomb The Music Industry!'s "It ceases to be 'whining' if you're still '****ting blood'"
Frank Turner covering Build Me Up Buttercup
Not sure if it qualifies as a cover, but I love Jimmy Fallon, The Roots, and Carly Rae Jepson covering?/playing an alternate version of Call Me Maybe Kazoos.

I have heard of other covers of Siffre's song, such as Nutini's, and I have not been impressed.
yea, that was a good cover of a Roy Orbison classic.

The version of The God That Failed is pretty good too but the original is better.
ALso, 6 feet under doing AC/DC's TNT.
RBUThraximundarUBRRUNiv-Mizzet, the FiremindUR
BWGhost Council of OrzhovaWBWUBRGChild of AlaraGRBUW
WBRKaalia of the VastRBWGBSapling of ColfenorGB
You like that?!
He sounds like what I imagine Patty and Selma from the Simpson's would sound like when they're in their 90s and dementia is starting to set in.

Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. On Acoustic. Beautifully done.
I do also think that Five Finger Death Punch's cover of Bad Company is pretty superb. I won't link to that though, I'm sure we've all heard it.
Also Land of Confusion by Disturbed. Same as the FFDP one though, no link as we've mostly all heard it
Come help me make my Pauper cube awsome!
Pearl Jam's cover of Last Kiss is also much better than the original. The original is way too upbeat for a song about getting in a car accident and having the person you love die in your arms.

EVOLVE ALL THE THINGS!!!
I love the vocal range the lead singer for SPG has.
Rise Against's cover of "Anyway you Want it." I don't even like the original version to begin with though.
The Dead Kennedy's "cover" of My Charona. It's actually closer to parody, but hey, it's worth a mention. It's called, "Pull My Strings."
