Finally got around to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Thought it was good. Had a brief 5 minute unplanned intermission in the middle of it thought. Now, I need to see it again so that I can figure out what happened in those 5 minutes. The film rolled in the background, but picture and sound were of the theater movie ads.
Clubbed - film about a working class guy who gets the crap beat out of him in front of his own children, then decides to take up boxing, and becomes a bouncer at a club with a bunch of other bouncers.... and then there's problems with the local mob and drugs, etc.
The movie isn't perfect, but it's got some great performances in it and the lead actor is amazing...
Violence was really brutal and affecting at times, which for most movies, it's not.
Also finally saw Megamind, which was good as well. I think it's underrated. Same flaws as other Dreamworks animated features (too talky... no poetry... no literary panache...) but made up for it with just great performances by Will Ferrell and Jonah Hill...
On netflix streaming.
I saw Colombiana last week-end. Not that I was expecting anything on Scarface level, it was still very disappointing. The movie starts well, the main heroine seems sympathetic enough. Then everything goes downhill. Magic Computers are able to give police farfetched leads, Cataleya builds traps that would logically take insane luck to work, but of course all the villains happen to be doing the exact thing needed to spring them.

Seven Samurai
Not quite sure what to make of it. It was really good, but at 3 and a half hours, it kind of drags on. The action sequences were pretty well done, and it was fun to watch.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Anybody know much about this Casey Affleck guy? He puts forth an amazing performance in this movie, just a perfect blend of eager to please but awkwardly unnerving. Does he have any other movies I should know about?

He is Ben Afflecks brother, he is currently starring in Tower Heist (I think that is what it is called) with Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller. He was in the oceans eleven movies as well.
I actually think he is a better actor than his brother.
What a truly powerful film. I viewed it in my religion class to see the impact of Judaism, and I really enjoyed the performances of Adrien Brody and all of the minor characters. Everything just seems so genuine and it really puts be back in the time, also the whole story of the holocaust devolving to a mass murder of the Jews was shown masterfully on film.
I saw 50/50 a couple weeks ago and it was one of the best movies I have seen in some time. A bit ham-handed in the bromance, but a very very good movie.
Puss'n Boots ***.5/5-- Dreamworks could turn this into a franchise if they wanted; a few more adventures before the Shrek movies, and a couple after. great movie. if you enjoyed Shrek and his twisting of fairy tales, you'll enjoy Puss'n boots.
Real Steel ***/5- You're typical underdog story, with Rocky Balboa as a robot.
For those interested:
Atom, the underdog, goes the full five rounds with the current champion'bot, Zeus. He gets knocked down, but he gets back up. As the fight goes on, Zeus' power cells starts draining so Atom actually gets an advantage-- and manages to get Zeus to taste floor.
Atom still loses the fight to Judges' Score-- but he defied everyone's expectation by lasting as long as he did.
Tower Heist- ***.5/5 I like to say it's The Italian Job if orchestrated by the Marx brothers. Not to spoil anything, but they get the job done and the money recovered.

Sadly, I don't get to watch too many movies due to life constraints, but I did get to finally see Sherlock Holmes (with Robert Downey Jr.) and Inglourious Basterds over the Thanksgiving weekend.
I also watched Sleeping Beauty with my wife and daughters, since they had never seen it before.

Though it was be utter crap, but was plesantly surprised.
The Expendables - no real plot, but who cares when you see people getting their heads blown off.
Tale of Despareaux - Good kids movie.

It was surprisingly decent for what it was, never heard about it prior but it was pretty funny.

Fun over-the-top craziness. Check it out if you're in the mood for a quirky psuedo-western.

It's still weird seeing Stephen Root in anything.

I've heard from Spoony that it's seriously awful. Not that I planned on seeing any more after the first anyway.
