If it's a serious movie, then as long as it doesn't completely change the lore, it doesn't really change it for me. If the 1st was good, that's what I'll watch, and enjoy.
I forgot one situation where bad sequels can screw over the original: when it screws over closure of a story element. Something isn't addressed that should be, or is addressed horribly, and then when you rewatch/replay earlier parts of the series it just sticks out.

The reverse can also happen: something that doesn't need to be addressed, is. Example Number One is of course the Star Wars prequels' midichlorians. There's also the explanation for immortals in Highlander 2. And in literature, you have Captain Nemo's backstory in The Mysterious Island (which screws up the chronology, to boot) and pretty much everything that happens in Dan Simmons' Endymion and Rise of Endymion.

It depends on whether the sequel and the original are part of a whole work, or if the sequel and the original are both stand-alone stories. If the movie is part of a trilogy or series, it's easy for a sequel to ruin a movie. It's a lot harder if the original works as a stand-alone, in which case you can just ignore the existence of the sequel.
I don't think any of the Disney sequels like Jungle Book 2 or Little Mermaid 2 invalidate the original. Nor do I believe that The Dark Knight Rises invalidates the success of The Dark Knight.
In fact, even the Star Wars prequels don't bother me so much because they're pretty much unanimously ignored if you're just talking about the films. Though I imagine if I were really into the Expanded Universe, they'd bother me more.
There's also sequels that aren't as good as the original, and in which the original is a stand-alone story, and are blatant attempts to just continue the franchise to make more money, but I actually don't mind. The Blade movies are a good example of this. Blade 2 is kind of analogous to a rom hack of the movie Blade where there's zombies. Blade Trinity is pretty bad. Both of the sequels are decent popcorn fare, though, because Blade's story ended in Blade 1 and all you're watching the sequels for is more scenes of Wesley Snipes being a badass and wasting everyone.
What really retroactively ruined my experience was The Thing prequel. I still can't believe how bad it turned out; now I have to think of it every single time I watch the scene in the Norwegian base in the John Carpenter movie.
Metroid Other M is horrible, but I'm still able to play and enjoy Metroid games... Well, Metroid games other than Fusion. Samus's boring elevator monologues and briefings with Adam are all really creepy now that we know how horrible the living Adam was.

The second I found out that focus groups convinced them to use CGI for The Thing, I knew I needed to stay away.

Ive heard the second Boondock Saints is preeetty bad in comparison to the first
Honestly, I loved it. There are some major shake-ups, but the movie was solid. I really only found that this movie got too cute with a new supporting character. Aside from that, it's really quite hard for me to criticize the film; it's a worthy sequel to an amazing film.
The dumbest part? The practical effects were done. They looked awesome in the "making of" videos. And the studio decided to just throw most of that time, money, and effort into the bucket.

"Virtue, Jacques, is an excellent thing. Both good people and wicked people speak highly of it..."
There are some movies that I really enjoyed which have had sequels made, and the general consensus is that those sequels were nowhere near as good as the original (and maybe even really bad!). I've avoided even seeing those sequels. To me they don't exist!
Terrible sequels usually make me appreciate the original more. Think of them like girls. A 6 or a 7 is nice, but put them next to a 2 and suddenly they look like an 8 or a 9.
Lets start out with the first one that popped in my head.
The Fast and the Furious. The first movie was awesome. It showed "how it is in the street racing world". The second one was MEH. The fact that they put a Skyline in it made it worth watching for me, even thought it was only for a few minutes. Tokyo Drift was absolutely amazing. I love that movie and still watch it to this day. I was a fan of drifting before F&F did it, so of course i flocked to the movies to see it.
Now things get ugly....the 4th one was garbage. This franchise has taken out the "street racing" aspect and added in a "fugitive" aspect. I hated the 4th movie with a passion. The fifth movie was...hmmmm, i guess it was ok just for the fact that The Rock was in it. I havent seen the 6th, nor do i plan on doing so.
Fun Fact: If you want to watch the F&F movies in order, this is the way they go. 1,2,4,5,6,3. Weird huh? 3 Prequels?
Terminator Series. The first one was amazing, the second one blew my FREAKING MIND, the third one made me wanna cry, and the fourth one made me want to kill. Horrible horrible horrible.
Star Wars. Now, i'm not even going to mention 4,5,6, because everyone who is a fan of sci-fi pretty much knows those were awesome. Now lets talk about 1,2,3. From a MOVIE standpoint, not a "I'm a huge starwars fan, give me this or die" standpoint, i loved them. The only exception was Jar Jar because i feel he was so unnecessary its hilarious. But yes, i did ENJOY the 1,2,3. Was it what all the hardcore StarWars fans wanted? No, it wasnt, but from a visual standpoint, i thought they were amazing. I think people expected to much from them or something. I dunno, i'm not a HUGE StarWars fan, but yeah, i enjoyed them.
Halloween (Rob Zombie Reboot). I loved these movies. I thought they were amazing in their gritty, dark way. People are torn on them but i feel they were done justice and amazing.
Halloween (OG). I loved the first one, but from there, it just kinda got...old ya know? Its like, this dude spends his entire life stalking this girl, and he somehow KNOWS where she is at all times. I remember in the...5th one i think, that he is actually a spawn of a demon. He has the mark of Thorn or whatever. So i dunno, it just kinda got cheesy.
A Nightmare on Elm Street. Love these movies all around. Every single one. Thats the kid in me. Robert Englund plays the character so well and i love it. Freddy vs Jason was ok, not the greatest, not something i would watch in my spare time. The reboot was decent, not bad. The story it told was amazing. I also liked how it didnt have any "joke deaths". The people fell asleep, and the people died lol.
Final Fantasy Games. 1-7 were amazing. I will still say today that FFVII is the best one to date. People will argue but meh, idc, my opinion. Plus Square Enix already said they refuse to remake 7 untill the FF franchise is dead. They even admit that to this day, no other FF is more beloved than 7. I played 8 and it ruined it for me, havent played one since. 15....now THIS looks good. Cant wait to play it, i have high hopes.
Devil May Cry. The first was amazing, second one sucked, ruined the series for me.
Castlevania. Loved 1, hated 2, loved the rest up untill 64. Screw that lol.
Metal Gear Solid (starting with the Playstation one). I loved the 1st one. i spent a LOT of time beating that game and trying to unlock the stuff (headband, stealth, etc). I played the second one...annnd i wasnt impressed and it kinda ruined it for me. Havent played since.
Overall, if its bad enough, it WILL ruin a series for me and i sometimes refuse to play a game/watch a movie because of its predecessors.
The worst sequel I've seen is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I think the 1st three are excellent sword and sorcery/gun and sorcery films. OST had a bland villain and, in its attempt to scale back from Pirates 3, succeeded all too well. I had a blast watching the 1st three films in the theatre; not so with OST. That said, OST doesn't tarnish the 1st three since it begins a new story.
Before I got on a star wars rant I have a couple of things to say.
First: Who doesn't like Die hard 3? You guys are crazy its almost better than the first one.
Second: You get a little of both with Mission Impossible. The second was SOOOO bad, but MI:3 was amazing, IMHO better than the first.
Third: Elder Scrolls wins for best sequals known to man. The franchise gets better and better with every release. I didn't think it was possible with Oblivion, but Skyrim is so good.
STAR WARS:
1) Midichlorians. The force was mysterious because the science behind it was destroyed with the Jedi Temple. This was well known in extended universe. Do you think that people just accepted force powers for THOUSANDS of years without investigating? We're talking about a civilization that was capable of faster than light travel. Also midichlorians are not bacteria. They are a non-cellular life form that exists everywhere. They cannot be destroyed, only moved (by the ysalamir). The midichlorians are the ones that actually create the force. Force sensitive folk have a natural connection with the midichlorians, and consequently can also use the force. If you were to inject Anakins blood into yours (assuming you don't die), the midichlorians would simply leave. Midichlorians are simply a marker that can be used to identify someone who is force sensitive. A regular person would have a small amount of them (because they are almost EVERYWHERE in the galaxy), but would not be able to control them. Some people (such as the Hutts, and various aliens) have a lot of midichlorians, but do not have the connection. This prevents most mind tricks from working. This is not a settled question. How midichlorians affect the force is debatable, in the Star Wars Universe it is akin to "who created us?" on Earth.
2)Jar-Jar Binks: EVERY single Star Wars movie has had a comedic relief. It became obvious that the aristocratic-minded C-3P0 wasn't doing it for the younger generation and a new model had to be made. The Ewok was an attempt at testing the water. It was met with VERY mixed feelings. Whereas Jar Jar is probably the most annoying character ever concocted, the only thing about his presence that makes me sad is that they didn't kill him off. (They sure killed plenty of Ewoks).
3)CGI. I can understand the apprehension with the CGI in Episode 1 and 2. You must realize that these movies were made at the beginning of an era. Personally I think Lucas should have waited a decade before releasing the prequal.
Honestly, it's George Lucas' creation, he can do to it whatever the hell he wants.
I watched the Smokey and the Bandit trilogy recently.
Wow... the second one is so bad it makes the third one seem ok.
At least the original will always be a classic.

I'm going to be the indy guy and say that Dreamfall: Longest journey was a horrible sequel, but it didn't really influence how I saw the original all that much, since that was, to me, a finished story.
As long as the story is finished in the first film/game/series/whatever, it's somewhat hard to actually ruin the original for me. However, as long as there are threads around which can be ****ed with, they can ruin that as well.

We have laboured long to build a heaven, only to find it populated with horrors.
Man, your missing out, they actually did justice to the series.
Other M I heard was terrible, so I stayed away, so no reference there for me.
The one that did it for me? X-2.
Final Fantasy X was by far my favorite FF game, and X-2 was just so bad, and ruined a lot of the original story for me.
Thanks to Heroes of the Plane Studios for the amazing sig.
