Nintendo is being too unique and different to the point that it's going to be their ultimate downfall in the video game industry.
THIS
Nintendo's shunning of online multiplayer and a severe lack of foresight to create an intuitive and feasible online universe is seriously what is killing the WiiU. If they had focused on such things 3rd party developers would no doubt have been clamoring to throw games at ninty fans and gamers would have flocked to it.
While I'd like to see Nintendo do better with online services, the fact is that the other modern consoles are more or less garbage when it comes to local multiplayer. The Wii or Wii U is still pretty much the go to for anything fun when my friends in real life come over, and I wouldn't change that.

But when you reverse it Nintendo (minus 3DS) is garbage on Online multiplayer while modern consoles and PC do it pretty much flawless as a whole.
When you look at time spent gaming and number of games sold, the Wii was a colossal failure.
There are two problems here.
1) Where's the comprehensive data for "time spent playing"? Unless you're merely using anecdotal data to back that claim up, which doesn't really work.
2) The Wii was a failure in number of games sold? Have you even seen any "best selling games" chart for the last generation? Here's Wikipedia's top-selling list (5 million plus copies) for each home console, which should speak for itself:
Wii:
1. Wii Sports - 82 million
2. Mario Kart Wii - 34 million
3. Wii Sports Resort - 31 million
4. Wii Play - 28 million
5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 27 million

Also take into account
2 games had system bundles for the wii and one had the motion plus bundle.

If you do that, only one game (GTA V) manages to match Super Mario Bros Wii, which is only the fifth best-selling Wii game. And we're talking freaking GTA V, which has been touted as having record-breaking sales.
On bundles, well, both other consoles had a lot of bundles as well, including a GTA V bundle for the PS3. So I don't see a point here.
Seriously, there are many angles one can take to point out failures on the Wii. I know I have a lot of complaints about it, including the abundance of minigame collections and forced waggle controls in games like Donkey Kong Country Returns. But really, number of games sold isn't one of those angles, not by a large margin.
That's like comparing Oranges and Tomatoes and then argue that since they are both fruits its a valid comparison.
It's a HANDHELD console, which again has a completely different set of decision making factors attached to it, it makes comparison between them and Home Consoles to be borderline moronic. It just isnt the same.

For the purposes of this discussion, it's a perfectly valid comparison. They're all gaming systems, they all cost money.
It's a HANDHELD console
So what? It's a gaming system made by Nintendo that's outselling both the PS4 and the X-Box One, thereby demonstrating that Nintendo's minimal third party support does not prevent it from selling gaming systems, or prevent it from outdoing both of its competitors.
I see where this is going... its about as productive as talking to a wall...
The first part of your argument has merit, Nintendo can rely on his first party titles and not really worry about anything else regarding his system that much is true.
However the second part is just not a valid point because the nature of a handheld console and a home console are just that different.
As to your argument that its valid because they are both consoles and they both cost money that would be like arguing that equating the damages of murder and rape is the same since both are violent crimes and both have victims.
And yes im aware most of my post will be ignored just to debunk the murder rape comparison....

Exactly how are those two analogous?

It was the only sentence in your post with any real content.
One is played at home? One can be played anywhere?
I mean you could lug the 360 and PS3 to an airport waiting area but I don't think most people do that...
Exactly why the handhelds should be left out of this debate right now. Let's put all 3 companies on the same ground. Home systems only.
Microsoft (the hypocrits who used the 1997 webcam games technology after cleaning it and updating it) has the XBox 360 and the XBox ONE (they could have kept the same name since the XBox One processor works inside a XBox 360), Sony has the PS3 and the PS4 and finally, Nintendo has the Wii and the Wii U.
We should keep the debate to these 6 systems. Microsoft will eat a wall with the XBox systems, I just know it. Bugs, controversy and more just makes it lose credibility. Sony, they will sail for many years due to good technology put to good use. Yet, they can be copy cats in a certain way with the wands they made. Nintendo, They keep developping systems that can support their games. They are experimenting, touching the limits and they will try to surprise us once more, just like they did with the Wii.

The sales stats over the holiday is beyond ridiculous. The thing you're ignoring (as with every debate with you, there's always some facts completely ignored), is that the 3DS could flood the market while the XBox One and PS4 literally sold every console on the shelf between release and Christmas. They had less product available! I'll say that again, the had less product available! They both sold every freaking system they had on the market which happens to all consoles upon release. This truly is an invalid point. Get a new tactic.
I just bought a 2DS because the number of 3DS games I want to play reached a critical threshold with Zelda: Link Between Worlds.
Between that, New Super Mario Brothers 2, Super Mario 3D Land, Pokemon X/Y, Castlevania, Fire Emblem, Pheonix Wright, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby, and a handful of others, there's plenty of games that I want to play on it.
When it comes to XBox/PS, what games are out there that you can't play on your home computer? It seems like all anyone talks about for them is the latest Call of Duty/Medal of Honor/Halo/whatever shooter, GTA, and sports titles, none of which remotely interest me.

However the second part is just not a valid point because the nature of a handheld console and a home console are just that different.
Just wanted to chime in here and say that I really don't see the difference. I own a Wii U and a 3DS right now. I bought both because I wanted to play specific games - same decision-making process. I play both at home, mainly, with the difference that I can take my 3DS with me more easily on trips.
I think the crux of the argument here is that the 3DS (and dedicated handheld gaming devices as a whole) is absolutely NOT a platform thought mainly for quick-play games, like mobile phones or tablets. There are several home console-quality releases in the system that take dozens of hours to complete fully, like Fire Emblem: Awakening, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.
Furthermore, 3DS consoles, accessories and games fight for shelf space with the actual home console games in pretty much every single store I go to. It's not like they have a separate "handheld gaming" section, because that wouldn't really make sense - it's all dedicated video gaming.
When talking about sales, by the way, every single game site I visit, presents unified charts - there isn't a separate sales chart for handheld gaming.
So again, I really don't see why you think we can't include a console like the 3DS (and the Vita, for that matter) in a discussion about sales for dedicated gaming devices.
Where I live, the 3ds games are seperated from the WiiU games.
Also, maybe you didn't search enough to find the charts, or you didnt use system specific keywords. I took around 3 or 4 keywords and instantly got this:
I do believe I have filled the system specific charts part here. So yes, we can take the handhelds out of the equation. Also, notice int he global systems chart that the top ten is mainly dominated by Nintendo? Microsoft only has it's XBox 360 in that one You have to checkt he top 15 to add one more point to Microsoft and finally take the top 25 to actually see all game systems from them. In the top 25 of all times video game system sales, Nintendo clearly dominates with over 500 million of units sold troughtout it's time as a living company. That's a whole lot more than Sony and Microsoft.
So your information says systems that have been out longer have sold more games? Hokay.
Don't know why people can't read a news article stating "Nintendo sales drastically down, CEO's taking 50% pay cuts" and realize XBOX/PS4 are doing better overall. You can't just look at sales figures and make any kind of case.
I hope you guys don't invest based on these theologies.
Nintendo will sink into a handheld only company or start making games for XBOX/PS4 if you ask me for a prediction. Gone the way of Sega. They continue to completely miss the mark on 18-40yr old gamers...a very large chunk of the market.
