Anyone play this? I was a huge fan back in the 90s (my friends and I played more L5R than Magic) and found out last year that it was still in print. I recently picked up some starters from the most recent set (Twenty Festivals) and am relearning the game.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.
I started getting into the spider clan back during the celestial/emperor transition, but stopped when the friend I planned to game with moved away from Seattle.
That friend recently moved back though, and I decided to take advantage of how cheap celestial and emperor edition boxes are on ebay now.
I am currently working on a Celestial through 20 Festivals edition cube (320/320 dynasty/fate sub-cubes). I'm not sure how it's gonna work out, because so many actual L5R players have warned me how difficult the game is to draft, but I'm still determined to make it, dammit!
The current crop of artists they have working on L5R are absolutely fantastic, and is huge part of my current interest in the game! If the art were as inconsistent as back during the pre-celestial/border change, I think I would have been much less eager to get into it.
EDIT: my image links didn't work out... Anyway, the new siege box set (kind of like the WoW ccg's raid decks) looks awesome:
I have to admit, anything based on the seven thunders does garner a lot of interest with me given when I originally played (I remember having the original print of Isawa Tadaka in my deck).
It is such a pain to get people interested in something new (to them) though. I really need to print out a complete copy of the Ivory rules and have it on hand when I am trying to demo the game.

This is why I'm going the cube route with my group. That way I can satisfy my own desire to blow money on the game, but not have to rely on whether anyone else is buying into it themselves.
Most of the random folks I've run into that do play are super eager to get a session going though. So as long as your area has a decent gaming infrastructure, I think you should be able to get some use out of your cards. Practically every store I buy L5R cards at, the clerk will say "Oh! what clan do you play? I play in a group that meets here on Saturdays!" I never hear stuff like that when I'm buying magic cards or other board games.
I would have to travel at least two hours to even buy cards at a store right now sadly. I think to date only one other person has even mentioned knowing of the game (and having played a bit at some point in the past, but no longer).
