anyways, i'm building a B/U/G brithing pod deck. its done really good testing.
Ah Birthing Pod. Opened one at the NPH prerelease, but ignored it in favor of Moltensteel Dragon. I mean come on, its a freaking dragon! You can't judge me that much right? Right guys?
Just to reiterate, this deck was built with a very limited card pool, so I am impressed with it when I consider that factor. I didn't even have a Grave Titan until 5m before first matches were called at FNM. Can someone explain to me why Geistflame and Gutshot are considered to be better than Shock, Galvanic Blast, or Incinerate? I've spent time reading the RDW threads, and I just do not understand. Geistflame I somewhat do because it has flashback and can get another counter on Shrine of Burning Rage, but Gutshot? Pay 1 or Shock myself to deal 1? How often is RDW so tapped out that it cannot spare R?
Gut Shot lets you kill their Stromkirk Noble and then still play your own on turn 1 (or similar things on the same curve) and lets you pick up your Chandra's Phoenix from the graveyard for free. I think that's basically it.

Doesen't that seem like more of a sideboard card? It seems great against aggro and possibly combo, but against control? Not so much.

Finishes off Liliana of the Veil after she edicts and plays as a zero mana Shock with an active Shrine. In the current environment it's fine to board it out against control but not too board in for aggro. If you're taking a board spot for aggro, it's Arc Trail.

It's starting to make sense now, thanks. Are you going to States this weekend? I'd like to but I am not prepared for are my decks, so I'm gonna pass. I'm still deciding what netdeck(s) I'd like to build. I'm thinking Solar Flare will be my primary, but I'm also looking at the RG Kessig Wolf Run or RDW, and U/x Illusions.
I am definitely going to States. Sadly, people have remembered that Elspeth Tirel exists and my b/r deck seems to outright lose to it (and the increase in Celestial Purge isn't helping). So I'm going to be switching for this weekend. I want to play something with Garruk, Primal Hunter and/or Elspeth Tirel. Something inspired by Township Tokens or Wolf Run Green is likely. U/W Walkers is not out of the question (see the list that won The Grudge Match).

I'd be interested to see a good Garruk/Elspeth list. I've always enjoyed forms of GW beatdown. I have seen nothing out of the Grudge Match, so I will look at that some time.
Ugh, sorry I haven't posted in ages, university's been a bit hectic. Anyway, I'm hoping to be online a bit more.
No sweat. How is the college life? I've been out a year only and I miss it already. So much better then part-time employment life
Also, what does everyone think of Fat Packs? I want to buy some Innistrad sealed products, (in addition to some single cards I have my eye on), but I can't decide whats the best investment for my limited funds...
Innistrad sealed isn't a bad deal right now but a lot of the prices will be going down some after state championships this weekend (i.e. there's a demand spike right now). I'd go for singles, but I'd be tempted to wait a week. Of course, wouldn't hurt to very closely watch for states' tournament results.
i see you around the modern forums a lot, you may recognize me as the "death and taxes guy".
welcome, and i definitely approve of the list!
Hey dude! I remember you for sure ! Haha
I'm trying to push modern mono black but no one seems to see it as competitive or even good. That's sad cause my list is doing well against Zoo (thanks to mainboard deathmark LOL) and combo.
You should join the discussion in that thread: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?p=7447513#post7447513
I'm quite astonished when I see people advocating on cards like Sangrophage when they don't even consider Gatekeeper of Malakir, Tombstalker or even Abyssal persecutor!
Furthermore I'll try to have a look at your D&T thread, since I like this deck a lot.

i checked the thread, but feathers deleted it. i remember it though. it was suicide black. personally the list doesn't look fast enough to be suicide, but maybe aggro/midrange. here is a thread (dead atm, but you can bring it back i guess) for mono-black control: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=347935&
it seems pretty good. or you could start your own thread for aggro/midrange.
Got top 8 at state champs out of 74 people. I was playing Wolf Run Ramp, as were 5 other people in top 8 with the remaining 2 spots being Solar Flare and mono-black infect (!!). My first round was against the Dungrove Elder version which plays more one-drop mana and Acidic Slimes than the 'real' R/G version. Being the more aggressive deck, his was better in the mirror and he got game three after his natural-drawn Acidic Slime and a missed land drop kept me off of Green Sun's Zenith for Primeval Titan, so he was able to Zenith for his first. I was able to put my 2 maindeck Devil's Play and 3 sideboard Autumn's Veil in the top 8 though, so yay!
Mono-black infect won. Pretty cool cause he is a regular at our local shop but hasn't been playing for very long. Me and another local helped him put the deck together and he was asking a LOT of good questions (sideboarding, what to prioritize with Distress, etc) and we gave the best advice we could. Apparently it paid off! Against Wolf-Run, it just has a better flyer plan with Skittles, Plague Stinger, and Whispering Specter in addition to Inkmoth Nexus and supported by Lashwrithe. Also, Virulent Wound is legit. Of note is that 7/8 players were playing Inkmoth as a critical part of their plan.

congrats, restless! and to your friend. are you by any chance in Alabama?
and what happens to the guy who gets first again? do they get invited to nationals, or what? and what was the prize?
i'm also suprised their was only 74 people my lgs gets over 200 for just prereleases. then again, i haven't been to many big tourneys, so i wouldn't know if 74 is regular.
Hey clan long time no speak, been busy with moving to Lackland and work and training and no car to get to the card shop. So do living weapons work with Mentor of the Meek?

I'm writing a Primer for Mono Black midrange right now and will post it as soon as I finish it. The card analysis is quite exhaustive thus taking a huge chunk of my time to complete. Haha
I'm really fond of Tombstalker and Abyssal persecutor in modern. Tomby is weak to dismember though but this card isn't that played (at least in my meta).
In the meantime, I'm playtesting UB draw go in standard!
My wallet still suffers from buying 4 Snapcaster and 3 Liliana of the veil.

Yeah, I'm in Montgomery, AL currently. It's not a big MTG community but we got the more dedicated people from Birmingham and and a few other places as well. I think we actually had more people for the Innistrad prerelease...
First got a box free entries to constructed PTQs/GPs for a year, which is a pretty good deal. I got 13 packs, so I got more than my entry back.

Yeah, I'll probably be pretty sparse for a while. Haven't had much magic time. But yes, Living weapons put a 0/0 onto the battlefield, which the mentor sees as having 2 power or less and triggers, and THEN attaches the equipment. The fact that the power changed doesn't make a difference anymore.

It's kind of another moment when we throw our hands up and go "DAMMIT universe, why you gotta always make me look bad in front of everyone?".

Well see ya guys!
awesome, would love to see it! and yah, i hope tombstalker is more noticed / better in modern. i got a playset just so i could do stuff with black casually, and possibly modern / legacy; i don't have the budget for bobs.
and i agree, making a primer takes time. i'm proud to have the primer with the most detail of all primers for modern (D+T; open all the spoilers on the primer and you will see what i mean) but it took me probably over 8 hours total to get it to where it is now.
and just fyi; you might want to do something with those snappys, they are going to go down to $15 any time now. long term, they will be in bob's range, but with so many packs gonna be opened of INN the card is going to go down. see the market street cafe if you don't believe me. i had 3, but i recently traded two and a small other thing for a FoW (!!) and i will probably just get a full set when they are at a low... makin money, ya know how it is... But if you plan on keeping them for a while that's fine, as they will go back up again over time (same with SFM, i hope).
as for liliana, i think she will go down as well over time; in fact, all INN cards will, except the sleepers / cards that start to see a lot of play all of a sudden (and even those will go down slowly over the next few months). long term, though, i don't know.
i really like liliana; she sees a little play in standard, modern, and legacy; and i think she has potential to be a 1-2 of in vintage (she can kill fatties that sneaked in via oath of druids / tinker), and her discard ability isn't so bad. what do you all think?

I just want Liliana to go down so I can get a couple for my legacy pox deck. I have 4 tombstalkers in it right now, I'm pretty sure thats not correct...<_>
I don't mean to derail the deck discussion, but I am curious on your thoughts:
Bloodline Keeper - Is this a good control card, a good aggro card, or both (depending on deck construction)?
At first I thought it was a good control card because it lets you make constant chump-blockers. Then I thought it was better in aggro (2BBB for +2/+2 pump and swing for the win). So, I'm not sure - its my favorite card in the set I would like to build a deck around it but I don't think there are many vampires in the set. If it is a control card - that's fine, but in an aggro deck, that's not.

;p Any input is welcomed!
I run Cemetery Reaper in my BUR deck, and it doesen't even need other zombies out. The ability to produce a 3/3 token (immune to Doomblade) at instant speed while exiling an opponent's reanimation (pun not intended) target is quite valuable.
Bloodline has evasion and makes creatures with evasion. The tokens are produced much easier, so I will be trying him in my deck. I think he will do well in control, but I'm not sure on aggro. At the least he pumps up Stromkirk Noble.
