Try a setup of 1 Police Chief, 2 Sane Cop, 2 Insane Cop, 2 Paranoid Cop, 1 Mafia Redirector (or Bus Driver), 1 Mafia One-shot Dayvig with the Mafia knowing the full setup of the game? Oh, and make the game a no-reveal on the Sanity. And give it a Night Start as well.
I have decided to put together a "Newbies' guide to mafia" to try and help new players pick up the game faster, and have smoother fist games. Included will be a big list of definitions of things like WIFOM, FoS, claiming, wagons and so on and so forth. I also intend to set out basic strategy - how to negotiate the random stage, how to respond to pressure, why NoLynch is a bad idea, general tips on scumhunting and being scum, and a massive reminder to NEVER EDIT YOUR POSTS EVER. Finally, some basic conventions like reading the rules, confirming by PM, how replacements work.
From the look of it, its going to be a massive wall of text, but should be navigable and informative. It will also (I hope) stop "what is a FoS?" being asked in every basic game ever.
I therefore welcome any and all suggestions - what would you have liked to know when you played your first few games? What knowledge should newbs have? What abbreviations/words are used in the mafia context?
Either post them here or PM me. I'm not particularly looking to collaborate, but if someone wants to be a second brain/proof-reader once I have the meat done, that would be very much appreciated.
What about a list of the roles used, their effects, how they are classified (In a basic game, a town roleblocker is usually considered as a protective role.) and how to find them as mafia?
When I see this kind of guide it is often written from a townie point of view, and when a newbie player get a mafia role it is very much harder for him that beginning as vanilla.
I have a great idea (atleast, i think its a great idea), im going to start a public setup design. We'll decide on roles, explain why each choice is made, and in what order they're made.
Im thinking something simple like a basic or something, then a mini, then a normal, then try to tackle a specialty.
I've been doing alot of reviews lately, and feel this would be a great thing for everyone. (Not that im trying to standardize mafia game design. that'd be boring. Just... assist people in the hopes of orienting game design a bit :))
Who's up for it?
If anyone is, please, post a theme for a basic!

I'm down for the public creation (and subsequent playing of) a game. I can't think of a level-headed theme, as LOST induced a lot of drinking, so my themes are:
Alcohol Mafia (I like this one)
Spongebob Squarepants Mafia
Judd Apatow Mafia (Anchorman FTW)
Maybe I'll have more sane ideas tomorrow. This works for now. It pleases me.

Vote 300 Mafia
I was going to use it for a mini at some point but I think it's better suited for a Basic because there isn't a whole lot of character development to work with for more complex roles.
We'd have to do in a separate thing like google groups if we were to submit it for playing. I'd be up for that though.
Ah. Aha. HAHA! I forgot that if I help design the game it totally wrecks me (or any other designer's) playing in said game.
Although I have been trying to think of a great way to play where you can reveal a substantial portion of the game without giving it away. It comes from a focus I've wanted, based around more gameplay than claiming and such. It just seems like an impossible task though.
Anyhoo, I'm still down for the public creation of a game. Sounds awesomesauce.

Okay, We'll here's how i was thinking of doing it. We'd have designers, and we'd have reviewers.
Reviewers would preferably be players with some experience, and the designers would be players who have less experience, or even more experienced players who have questionable roles they wanna air out and see what happens.
This would be the test run, and if it goes well, we'd move to the mafia subforum potentially. These, likely, wouldnt be RUN games, just designed to help everyone's design skills, show how some of the more experienced designers think and why they make their choices, and possibly some of the flaws of some questionable mechanics and roles.
On top of that, I know there's quite a few players who have design fever like I do , and simply ENJOY designing games.
And i Agree, 300 sounds good. Its a base setup, alot of flavor, but no real CHARACTERS such, so claims can be pretty basic.
Edit: Its going to be a mini. Not a basic. Too boring, too few potential design spots.
LETS GO! (as for flavor, screw flavor for now. Just design roles, we can assign flavor later)

"The Critics always said that we'd only have a black president when pigs flu"...
Post Action: "This is Sparta!" Daykill target player.
Nice design. Probably better as a vig since an unlimited SK in a mini is SILLY.
Unless, and this is a mechanic ive been toying around with: Give the mini SK limited shots. a 2 shot SK in a mini is not overpowered, wont cause the game to speed up immensely, and has decent chances of winning.
EDIT: We need some sort of idea to go around?
Nothing stopping others from contributing to the conversation at all. Its whats fun about it. You suggested this SK now, i've made suggestions, now you, or others can comment on this role, or continue the chain and suggest more new roles.
The next person can do the same. Suggest a role or mechanic, and have the next posters comment (I'll comment on everything most likely.)
Then at the end, put it together!
Also, I would want these games to be run somehow, designing is fun and so is watching a game you designed in action.
I agree, it would be great. What we could even do is, at some point, design an open game. One DESIGNED around having all the information out, and run it. Either on MTGS or elsewhere. But for standard setups, theres no REAL way to run them without compromising the point: Showing the way to properly design a game, flaws and pitfalls of roles.
Hell, part of my thought is even to just put together a recepticle of roles, so that mods can have a selection of different roles, along wtih comments and reviews on each role.
I think this could be VERY awesome

In Indiana Jones, the SK was a full SK, but the mafia could not kill as long as he was alive.

Well, I guess I'll just have to watch 300 again to get role name ideas *wipes drool from chin*

The idea of creating an open game has always been appealing to me.
On top of that, I know there's quite a few players who have design fever like I do , and simply ENJOY designing games.

We might actually want a separate thread for this because it's not something everyone will want to talk about.
I'm a designer who tries to integrate flavor into mechanics as much as I can, which makes for a very resonant and cool-feeling game, but sometimes causes gameplay to suffer because the game can be broken by a mass-claim, etc.
That said, for 300 Mafia I was thinking that the Spartans would be the mafia and the Persians would be the town, with Ephialtes possibly as a Survivor. Also, the scum should have abilities that get better as long as more of them are alive to mesh with the flavor of the phalanx.
Leonidas - Spartan King (Mafia)
[Insert Flavor Here]
[Insert False-Claim Here]
Abilities:
Once during the game, during Day, you may post "Daykill X" in the game thread, where "X" is a player's name. If successful, you kill that player.
Once each Night, a mafioso may PM the name of a player to your moderator. If successful, you kill that player.
As long as at least one other mafioso is alive, kills you perform can't be prevented.
As long as two other mafiosos are alive, you can't be targeted by abilities.
EWP: I see that Syrenz stole some of my thunder.
Also, I think that many mods would rather design their own roles that fit better into their specific games than use roles designed by other people. Those mods may, however, use said roles as inspiration or brainstorming.
Give the mini SK limited shots. a 2 shot SK in a mini is not overpowered, wont cause the game to speed up immensely, and has decent chances of winning.
I like that. Leonidas probably becomes a bit hoarse from shouting "This is Sparta!" all day anyways lol.
I think this could be VERY awesome
Indeed.
However, we may want to move this somewhere else, as if we want to show what we're doing, this whole thread would have to only be about this, which wouldn't really work.
What we could even do is, at some point, design an open game. One DESIGNED around having all the information out, and run it. Either on MTGS or elsewhere. But for standard setups, theres no REAL way to run them without compromising the point: Showing the way to properly design a game, flaws and pitfalls of roles.
At some point? I want to do that right now!
Make all the roles have them all be public and assign point value and randomize them.
But I can see why you would want to steer clear for the first time.
A role:
Spartan Lookout
Night Action: Watch target player. You may kill any one person targeting that player (they are killed before their action takes effect).
Spartan Lookout
Night Action: Watch target player. You may kill any one person targeting that player (they are killed before their action takes effect).
Seems a bit overpowered to me. I like it though, but there would have to be some sort balance for it.
Uber Immortal (Giant guy with the bad teeth ): Cannot be killed unless he is targeted by two or more killing abilities during the same time period (day, night)
What about a list of the roles used, their effects, how they are classified (In a basic game, a town roleblocker is usually considered as a protective role.) and how to find them as mafia?
I was pondering a list of roles you get in basics, and I suppose I ought to put something in. I read an article once on how to find the cop... I suppose I could incorporate some things (like if they don't show knowledge of the vanilla role PM, they're likely a power role)
