@Sep and Hunter: Here's hoping both of you are okay after the typhoon and all the chaos. I don't know exactly where in the P.I. you are, but hope it's on the lee side of the storm.
Thanks Snoop it was a real disaster, let me tell you that, thankfully my area was not affected we did have a little rain but NOTHING compared to what the capital had, im not sure where Hunter44 if he was located in Luzon then yeah he saw way worst than me.
Also thankfully the second Typhoon did not hit as hard (more like it missed the most heavily populated areas and instead hit the more rural areas and towns) otherwise this would have really been a crisis (ground was still overly saturated with water, land/mud slides where being considered and the damn was most likely not going to be much use since it would have had to be opened early due to the massive influx of water)
So yeah, wasnt a pretty sight

That, and write a book or three. I have a few story ideas, and it's why I was originally an English major. Another thing is, more and more, I feel like I'd like to somehow make a difference in the atheist community. If I could do that by writing a book or running for public office or something, that wouldn't be out of the question... but that's way down the road yet. I've got several years of just traveling around and seeing the world ahead of me.
Writing a book definitely sounds like something cool to do. I had an idea for a book this summer, too. I don't mean to discourage you from it but I ran into a really big hurdle with it when I realized I'd need to pay for my own publishing of the book after talking to a few friends of mine and boy does THAT get expensive here in the States (5K minimum). That really discouraged me from even getting a good start on it though I may need to try again, if for anything but to say I finished writing a book.
As for the atheist community thing, more power to ya on that Stuffers! I seriously wish you the best of luck in whatever you're doin.

Yes two Typhoon's in less than a week's span and to let you guys get an idea of how severe the things where they where labeled as deadlier than Katrina! in fact the first Typhoon that hit had a downpour of 430mm compare that to Katrina's 350mm... and the second one was supposed to be stronger, but like i said it did not hit on the more industrialized cities and instead hit the more rural areas, it did a fair bit of damage as well but nothing compared to what would have happened had it hit the capital as well... the loss of life would have been unbelievable

@Photon: cube is fun, but a real chore to put together and balance. Did you know if you have a sleeved cube, you have to also have sleeved basic lands? We didn't, and we were on our way to a cube debut, when we realized this and had to make a detour to the game store to buy 400 spankin new sleeves. In the same iridescent beetle-green as the cube sleeves. Yuck.
Ugh. That sounds awful. We've been avoiding sleeving in EDH just because no one wants to go out and buy a bunch of matching sleeves (it may just be me, but it seems like most of the time, the only sleeves they have come in packs of 40, and they don't have more than 1 or 2 of the same kind at the store at any one time, making it impossible to have a fully sleeved EDH deck that matches). Cube sounds like it is probably something to try eventually, but to be really honest, it sounds like a lot of work for one person, and I can't see anyone else I play with taking a lot of interest in doing one.
Today is Friday, and that means Planechase EDH with the broz.
Same for me! I'm looking forward to it, although I don't know that anyone else in the group is. I'm going to run by the game store later and pick up some boosters, I think, too. Last night I pulled a foil Hellkite Charger and a lot of crap, so I was kinda disappointed and was hoping my luck would be better today.

Our house is located in Luzon, near Manila, called Calamba City. Many houses in Calamba were also affected to floods. Thank God our area was very high to be reached by the flood.
The Capital city suffered most, floods recorded the worst were above human level. Many houses are submerged in water, seein only their rooftops.
The first typhoon (Phils named "Ondoy") has low sustained winds, but the water poured is equivalent that of a week's rainfall 24-7. The water gained speed like crazy that's why people didnt have that much time to save their homes. Some of them even died. Some of them climbed electric wires and made boats out of their doors, refrigerators and other things just to survive.
The second typhoon (Phils named "pepeng") luckily to affect only tips of Northern Phils, was the lifebreaker supposedly for Manila, for this one not being like the first one.. Pepeng was strong at about 190~200 kph sustained winds. It made a sudden calamity in our Northern provinces in 1 day. It got out of our country on October 5, but on october 8, another typhoon heading to Okinawa Japan (called Quedan) pushed Pepeng back to the Philippines but it weakened already. Still, weakened Pepeng has caused minor calamities to the North after receiving major damage. SICK..

I think Extended is going to be very diverse especially with Mind's Desire and Tendrils of Agony rotated out. I think Aggro-Control decks will be weaker with the drop in combo and with the rise of pure aggro. But it's not impossible for aggro-control to adapt to this shift and they certainly can adapt given the correct configuration of cards.
Faeries is an aggro-control deck that's pretty capable of adapting to this since the deck has a vast array of tools to withstand any metagame. Zoo will most likely remain as a strong choice as well especially with the drop in combo. Not to mention, Zoo already has a good game against most of the field outside of combo. However, I could see more decks spring up to the top tables in any given tournament.

I have several friends in Seattle whose families in the Philippines are only just now starting to get their phones back and call with stories of being flooded out. Can't stress it enough, keep your bank papers and family pictures and Magic cards in sealed plastic containers and ziploc bags. even if you're just putting things in storage.
Sounds miserable at any rate. I hope the weather gives your city time to heal.
EDIT: It's Thanksgiving in canada and I have to start cutting potatoes :/ Ah well, I can eat the skins and nobody will notice. Goo times
Oh, I see how it is. I come back, I get a nod of the head, a tip of the hat. Maybe next time I disappear and then return, I'll come back with hooters and see how you respond, mister.
How depressing of an exchange.... to Yukora and Photon
And good luck over there in the Phillipines.. keep us posted!
I just watched Star Trek III and IV today, that was fun, plus played some more Persona 3... thought maybe I could beat it today, but no, it threw me for a spin... *sigh*.
Now I'm going to clean the kitchen and cook dinner for Brad once he gets home from work in a little bit.
Still stressed out from looking for jobs.. I took a break during the weekend, since I'll have time to do it during the week at work... I found out about a lead, but I need to find out what's happening with their hiring.. they're not sure if they're hiring anybody, but they'll be in touch soon, so here's hoping!!
Oh and congrats to Frozen Fire for the 1400th post! A for you, sir!
Gonna go try to clean the kitchen.. I hate doing dishes.. ewww.. and then cook dinner. It'll be good, basic ziti with red sauce and green beans.

Didn't really get to play EDH this weekend, couldn't get a decent game going, ended playing 1v1 with Josh, which really isn't the same. Still, I pulled a foil Warren Instigator from a random booster I picked up, which made my Ib deck happy.

Well over here things are calming down, its been well over a week and at least i havent heard of anything else, reboulding and cleaning is taking up a lot of resources (honestly I have been unable to find a single carton of Nestle milk!... theres a few other brands of fresh milk around, but im silly that way and my oldest is so darn picky... which i think he got from me sadly... but other than that things are not as bad as they could have been)

Hmm since its been a while since I last posted, here's some updates about me..
1. Again, I was hired last July 2008 as a purchaser for Toshiba, in Direct material procurement
2. After I quit paper magic ive been into Computers and Online gaming.. As of now I am using Core 2 Quad Q9550 OC'd to 3.4 Ghz, and Im into downloading and gaming a lot. Most of my money got into my computer
3. Im into watching Heroes, Leverage, Big Bang Theory and recently Glee.
4. I'm still with my girlfriend Theresa, were going to be together for four years this January 2010.
5. Ive gained weight.. (geez)
But I am still updated in Magic cards, I just don't buy em anymore (^^,)
Photon: Oh, just the whole "We beat the 12th Shadow.. now it's over... Oh wait, the chairman was evil..." bit
and that last boss was actually pretty easy, compared to the Wheel of Fortune one..
Oh, hahaha, yeah. Not to spoil, but prepare yourself for a lot more craziness after that.
Some of the full moon shadows are a joke, and then some are just outlandishly powerful if you go in unprepared. I can't remember which one it was, since I haven't played it for a good while, but one of them just absolutely trounced me. So I take it you are enjoying the game then?
You might really enjoy Persona 4 once you finish it- Persona 4 is a lot like 3, only more streamlined, with a very engaging story, a bit more variety, and (in my opinion) a more engaging cast.
Anyway, after 4 hours of recording with/for Blaine Woodturtle, my throat and mouth are completely trashed! My jaws ache, and my voice is all scratchy... voice acting is pretty exhausting work!
Yeah I'm really loving that game... I borrowed it from a friend, and I go for spiels of time where either I play nonstop, or I don't play it for ages... but it's the kind of game where you can kind of go "oh THAT's where I was...." even if you haven't played it in a while.. Sometimes I just got so frustrated I put it down for months at a time, but I'm freaking determined to finish it... One thing that annoys me is the (granted they're few) cutscenes that don't have captioning.. the ones that are kind of cartoony, like anime... Fortunately Brad was there with me when Shinji died, so I could kiiiinda catch what happened there.... Actually maybe you can explain, what exactly happened there? Who killed him?
Yeah, i've noticed that about the full moon shadows.. I was expecting a helluva lot of challenge from the 12th shadow, but I was like 'that's it? really?'
Choosing a group to go up to Tartarus with me can be fun and annoying/irritating at the same time... Now I've gotten to the point where I try to choose the people who seem more underpowered and bring them up with me, along with a couple people who are up to par, that way usually they can get up to par too... most of the time..
Dammit, talking about this makes me want to go home and play it... lol.
EDIT: Actually, Persona 3 is one of the first games that I've really felt motivated to finish all the way through, and that I actually feel like maybe i actually WILL accomplish that..
Oh and I forgot to mention, but I think you already knew, a while back when you were asking about your wedding, and who will be coming.. you can count on me and Brad to go, providing finances and everything else lines up at that point... jobwise shouldn't be a problem since it's on the weekend, but we'll see. At this point I'm still saying/thinking that we WILL be there.
I'll check out that podcast when I get a free moment tomorrow. I just got back from Tokyo on a ten hour bus ride. Gods, the bus is cheap ($60 vs. $130 for the bullet train), but it takes friggin' forever. It's a good thing I had a book with me to read.

Unlike a lot of RPGs, Megaten in particular, P3 and P4 are easy to pick up after putting them down for a bit, because of the way they play. You never end up stuck in a dungeon, you always know where you are because of the calendar, and you tend to have a routine, so it is a good game for that.
Most of the anime cutscenes don't have a ton of voice acting, fortunately, so you aren't missing too, too much- you do miss some, but they are used pretty sparingly.
Spoiling this, for obvious reasons- When Ken is trying to get his revenge on Shinjiro for killing his mother, Takaya shows up and tries to shoot Ken. Shinjiro jumps in the way and takes the bullet, and that's what kills him.

Ok that makes sense.. And another thing I was wondering.... obviously spoiler this too, but what the devil was the deal with the chairman? I know he was bad but what was he trying to do? Or was that not clear to anyone at this point in the game??
Yeah I enjoy those kind of routine based games... When you say P4 is more streamlined, what do you mean by that, exactly? Also, for games like this one, what are other games you'd recommend I try that have a similar "feel" ? Most RPGs end up frustrating me and making me drop them and I never end up picking them up again because of how annoying it was/is to remember where I was/what I was doing, and so on and so forth...
Also, how long is the second part of Persona 3? The Answer?

I can't say a whole lot without spoiling future events for you, but basically, he wants to bring about the end of the world because he basically thinks the world is sick. That's about all I can say at this point.
Persona 4 has a friendlier combat system, and a lot of the catches in P3's system are ironed out. Persona 4, mechanically, is like Persona 3 with all the annoying bits taken out. You can control your allies in combat, you have a relationship meter with all your allies, not just the girls you can date, your relationship meter actually impacts combat (people with high affection for you will save you from attacks that will kill you), the attack properties are better balanced and there are fewer of them, and it is easier to budget your time, since you can do dungeon exploration in the afternoon. There is very little dead time in P4, you can pretty much find something to do every day.
Furthermore, Persona 4 has more challenging battles, but at the same time is more forgiving- basically, it makes fights more dangerous, but gives you options and interface aspects that make it easier for you to deal with that difficulty. So basically, the difficulty kind of evens out, and you are left with battles that are rewarding and strategic without being aggravatingly difficult or overly punitive. P3 has battles that can be hard, but many of them are just ... well, they pull punches. And then, with most other Megaten games, they don't even care, the battles will crush you mercilessly, but you never feel a lack of challenge. So P4 kinda of gives you a happy medium.
As far as other RPGs that are like P3 and P4, I can't really think of any offhand. The Persona series on a whole is pretty unique, conceptually, but 3 and 4 are radically different not only from the rest of the series, but from most other games in their genre. They're pretty unique. Josh says that the Mana-Khemia games are supposed to be a bit like them, but having not played them, I don't really know how accurate that is.
As for how long The Answer is... honestly, I don't know! I've only played the original P3, I've never actually played through FES. It's supposed to be a good 20 hours, though, I believe. It's also pretty difficult, from what Josh tells me.
Glad to hear that you've decided on a date for the wedding Looks like there's going to be a few MTGS weddings within the next couple years...
I'm trying to search for jobs, plus do my normal job... this is aggravating, looking for work, seriously.... part of me wishes that I was just out of work so I could devote all of my time to the job hunt so I don't need to split my time halfway between work and job hunting.... I wish things would just miraculously fall into place.. I hate feeling like this, where I'm just grabbing on by the fingernails...
I'm tired......I just want to go home at this point. Ugh. I know what everyone is saying, that it's likely a case of "one door closes another opens", but still.. I wish I knew where that door was NOW!!!!!!
Josh, thanks for filling me in, I figured it was one of those things where nothing is really clear at this point in the game I guess I'll have to see how it goes when I get ahold of Persona 4... Anybody know how much it's going for these days???

EDIT: Yay, 3,800th post!!
It will clear up. You actually have a good deal of game left, you are sort of entering the last stretch here and it will all be a lot clearer.
P4 was 40 dollars when it was new, so a year later, you should be able to find it used for ... not too bad. Hard to say how much, but I'm willing to bet you can pick it up for about 20 bucks in the right place. I really recommend it. I loved P3, but P4 is easily one of my favorite games of all time. It has so much charm. I get all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it.

That's cute Mr Stuff! And congrats on your impending wedding Sephy. Trust me, it will take about that long to get all the preparations in order, unless you have wads of cash and can just hire a consultant to get it all done for you.
Lately my interest in Magic has flagged and I'm finding myself drawn to computer games again. The kind I love, and my husband hates: RPG games made on an RTS platform. He grew up playing tons of games, Ocarina of Time and a lot of other RPG made for the console. I grew up playing gin rummy and very occasionally getting to go to the arcade to play Street Fighter II or Terminator 3. So it's all very novel and exciting to me, but it's old news and probably boring as hell for him. And perhaps for my audience of other 20somethings who grew up with at least 1 console in the house. Now I'm trying to learn secondhand from them what made their favorite RPGs good. I STILL don't have a console, haven't played a true RPG, don't even have a copy of Prince of Persia someone bought me 5 years ago.
So my question to the coffeehouse: What makes an RPG stand out? What makes it tedious and boring?
For example, our roommate listed his likes/dislikes. Leveling up sucks. Numerical stats for everything, and having to keep track of them, sucks. Having to scour a level for a single key sucks. I can kinda understand that. Being able to change roles from time to time in the same campaign is great. Being able to shortcut to a new area without having to slog through button mashing zombie hordes is great. Having objectives which don't revolve around combat or button mashing is nice.
So...down with Diablo, up with Zelda?
The inherent problem here, is that designing RPG games for an RTS platform (Age of Empires family of games) means you have mostly combat stats to track and improve. there's little if any game mechanic for magic use, locks/keys, shapeshifting, or even unique NPCs. You pick from a range of NPC "heroes" or personalities and customize by way of their combat stats. You can "create" locks and keys by enabling or disabling access to player x. It's very limiting. So most games end up being zombie wars or Defence of the Ancients. I want to steer away from that and try to incorporate what RPG players want. Your thoughts are certainly welcome, please give descriptive examples as I am a complete novice to the world of RPG.

Didn't really get to play EDH this weekend, couldn't get a decent game going, ended playing 1v1 with Josh, which really isn't the same. Still, I pulled a foil Warren Instigator from a random booster I picked up, which made my Ib deck happy.

The Answer?

I think I'll just drop this off here until I get my blog post done...
Edit:
... the HELL, Stuff!?
...
I <3 Akihabara.
