To blue - Luckily I looked back over the posts or I'd've missed your alterations. I can't believe you referenced Old Gregg - I thought it was from such an obscure show that no-one else would know it. "I've got a man-gina!" Excellent!
I really despise a lot of American humour. It's so direct and overexplained and reliant upon little whimsical gags that it becomes incredibly boring before long. Whatever happened to the god old days where one thing meant another and innuendoes run amok and unabashed?
Humour is absolutely important, ad I've tied that intelligence. If they can understand my jokes and make their own in a similar style then that's a great start.
((Also, I had a look at some of your custom cards. Hopelight Eidolon is insanely broken as it is - remove the second ability altogether and it's still nice and strong.)) =J

Intelligence is a big turn on for me, and can sometimes raise previously conceived levels of attractiveness. On the same note, if a guy is cute and willing to open his mind to new ideas and possibilities (whatever they may be) then he's doing well in my book.
If a guy who I'm chatting to is drunk then the attraction goes right down. I don't care how cute they are or how intelligent they claim to be.

Wow... I feel so unqualified to comment on this entire conversation... so I'm going to change the subject!
I saw Sweeney Todd (the movie) last night. It was good, but a bit... excessive. I'm not one who has a problem with gratuitous violence, I loved 300 and never batted an eye, but there were a few points for ST I had to look away. Also, there really weren't any songs that made me go, "Yeah, I wouldn't mind listening to this more!" So I'm not going to be buying the soundtrack. Great Depp performance (duh), and it was entertaining, but I'm glad I just rented it.
If a guy who I'm chatting to is drunk then the attraction goes right down. I don't care how cute they are or how intelligent they claim to be.
I'd argue for drunks everywhere, but I try not to get defencive twice in one day.
On a slightly weird tangent, my browser spellchecker is constantly making what I type look strange to me. For instance: 'defencive' .... what the hell?? I always thought it was 'defensive', which Thesaurus.com backs up. But no, Firefox claims that there's a 'c' in there. And now I'm confused.
Also, in an ironic twist, 'spellchecker' is not a word.
I really wanted to see Sweeney Todd but sadly didn't have the time. Depp is a great actor, and I can't wait to see portray Linbaba in Shantaram. That book rivals 1984 for the most powerful and mind-shaping story I've ever read.
EDIT: To Mikey G: Nope, it should be 'defensive'. Google define backs me up (not that I ever doubted it).

I think it's because I have my language set to Canadian. English in Canada is a mess because we recognize both American and British spellings and use both interchangeably. I'm thinking that's why my spellchecker is such a knob.
@Howler: Is it the songs you didn't like, or the performances? I have the soundtrack from the 2005 Broadway Revival with Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris and it's amazing. Maybe Johnny and HBC just don't have the vocal ability for the musical? Granted, it IS Sondheim, and he's known for his weird music. I haven't had time to see the movie yet... also, it wasn't playing in my city when it came out
EDIT: @mikey: Yah, but neither the British nor the Americans spells it "defencive".

Level 3 Magic Judge
Do you know any judges who always impress you with their work ethic, knowledge, or attitude? Nominate them to be the next Judge of the Week!
Neither Johnny nor Helena can sing in any professional sense, though they are both excellent actors.
Patti & Michael do a great Sweeney Todd (Lauren Molina is also a fabulous Johanna in that production. I met her! She's in my profile pic). Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou do a great Sweeney Todd. Or Angela and George Hearn. Or Patti & George, in concert.
But NOT Johnny and Helena. In terms of vocal ability, anyway.
And, in any case, the movie gives one very little idea of the music. Because the make extravagant cuts. (Hah, no pun intended. Well, maybe a little bit.)
In much more exciting news, my dad's fiancee had her baby last night. I'm going to copy and paste my LiveJournal entry on the subject, because the strange, loopy brilliance I occasionally exhibit when I've only slept an hour is something I can't summon up at will (well, maybe a little bit.)
Anne has, through the Miracle of Procreation (tm), had a beautiful baby girl!
I assume she's beautiful. I still haven't been home, so I suppose it's theoretically possible she is not. But that would ruin the narrative, so I deem it unlikely.
She was born last night, and is currently NAMELESS.
As far as I know. Again, haven't been home yet. All of this is subject to change enormously without notice.
Well, not all of it. I doubt Anne will, for example, spontaneously un-have the baby. Though anything's possible.

Well then you can't very well defend the drunks anyways
Viridian Circle: see now I have a qualm about your logic. Just because a person is clever doesn't mean they'll recognize that you're flirting with them. See flirting is second nature to Texans. I do it without realizing I'm doing it. So when someone does it back I don't really notice; I figure they're just being nice. And see it's my assumption that people are just nice to each other in general (I know that sounds crazy!). So either I'm not clever by your assumption that a clever person should be able to pick up on when someone is interested in them, or you need to be more than clever to receive those signals.
Drunk: I really can't say I'd feel comfortable in a club or bar scene unless I was drunk. And I don't think I've ever been buzzed. I'm either sober, drunk, or plastered (I've only been plastered once and that was enough of that). Un/fortunately I don't drink much and I don't go to the clubs much....Actually I'd probably feel more comfortable if I went more but most of those gays are just so trashy.
Mighty Boosh/Humor: Yeah it's obscure but Youtube solves everything nicely. Have you ever drunk bailey's from a shoe? I have all things that are nice. Like this. This is nice. Do you want this? I'll keep it here for ya.
American humor plays on the fact that there's such a large population to entertain and that the vast majority of them are retarded. At least I assume. The other side is that American society is largely sensation based and if the sensation isn't big enough then people don't like it. Unfortunately if it requires you to be more cerebral when watching it will suffer from low ratings (usually) and eventually get cancelled before its time. Meaning there are a lot of dramatic shows and reality shows that ooze drama on tv right now. Lately that's had more to do with the writer's strike, but it's been popular for a long while because of low production costs and high ratings.
American TV comedies from long ago were kind of spearheaded by I Love Lucy and the like. There's a large sect of American society that till enjoys the slapstick. I have a small affinity for it, but there's nothing witty about it.
Different networks have different senses of humor too. There's NBC which had Will and Grace. It was clever some of the times and obvious others and slapstick even others. Frasier also had a bit of slapstick and less obvious and more veiled humor. With Tina Fey though they finally can get into a smart comedy that people will actually watch.
There's CBS which generally relies on familial dischord to produce zany situations and stuttered backpedaling. It also produces a fair amount of slapstick. But there's nothing clever about CBS writers. Take a look at Two and a Half Men. They're so far behind the times there that I'm desensitized to every "riské" scene they attempt to lavish my depravity with. The truth is that that show has nothing clever or witty about it. They take all the same old tricks and do them badly where others have mastered the art. They rely not on actors but on people being who they are. The child in the show is awful, Charlie Sheen plays himself, Conchata Farrel attempts to be the gruff no mercy no sympathy curmudgeon and just has no sense of delivery and John Pryor is just the most annoying person I've ever watched. The Big Bang theory gets kind of grating in the same pretentious way that Frasier did at first but I stick with it because I like Kaley Cuoco. But for the most part if I want to watch a show that is sweet and sometimes funny but I'm not looking for much clever, then I'll watch "How I met Your Mother".
Fox has a history of pushing the envelope of what is Riské. I firmly believe that if it wasn't for shows like "Married With Children", "The Simpsons", "Futurama", "Family Guy", and "Cops" we wouldn't have shows like CSI or House or Will and Grace and so on. (ABC also had a hand in it with Roseanne pushing the envelope back in the 80s). We need Fox's brand of humor even though sometimes it's more miss than hit. (Watch the season premiere episode of when Family Guy came back from cancellation. Peter lists a slew of shows that got cancelled. It's a funny scene.) There's a lot of shows on Fox that just aren't for everyone. But if they hadn't existed other major/non-cable networks couldn't raise their bar of what they were willing to joke about. Well they could, but Fox's reputation has been built on being a little edgy whereas ABC is owned by Disney and has had to work really hard just to downplay that so they can put on more juicy shows.
I dunno. Humor can't evolve on network TV if buttons don't get pushed. CBS is not being innovative they're lagging behind. NBC tries to push forward but doesn't get rewarded for it so they backpedal. Fox tries everything and keeps what works and gets rid of what doesn't...sometimes cuz I don't think American Dad is that funny.
Help has come in the form of a bit of basic algebra. I feel that it'll shed some light on your problem here.
Basically:
S + T = W
...S in this case stands for 'spam' and the T stands for 'light trolling'. And the W? That stands for 'Warning'. I love math. -- {mikeyG}
Sometimes I'm an asshat when I say things in frustration.
Still, I ruv roo.
I was just kidding, so no harm no foul.
Not like I've never treated a slampiece with disrespect before, anyway. Sometimes people are like porkrinds, not too fulfilling but they're what you reach for when you're stoned and you just want garbage.
And as long as there's no feelings on the line, that's okay. You don't have to think of the other person as anything more than a warm, squirmy body. A lot of people feel that's shameful, but whatever. Not every encounter is that way, but sometimes you have an itch that needs scratching and so do they. And they don't need to be too bright or overly cute for that.
It was okay. The only problem was that neither Depp nor Bohamn Carter are great singers, and the main attraction to that play is the music.
If you are intrested, see the play that's currently touring in most major cities.
I saw it with my boyfriend a couple of days ago. Or at least watch the play on video (the George Hern/Angela Lansbury recording is the one I like the best.)
my b/f is a huge Stephen Sonheim fan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Sondheim
Edit: Howler; I agree the gore in the movie was excessive, but that waskind of the joke. It's like that in the play too, but becuase it's a play they can't spend as much on special effects. The whole point is the character's (and by extention the audaince's) attitude about violence. It's just so out of wack with how things should be, it can only be presented ironically. Plus Todd did spend 15 years in prison, framed for a crime he didn't commit so the Judge who sentenced him could rape his wife and steal his daughter. That's enough to drive alot of pepole crazy.
I am petitioning for the removal of mythic rarity. Sig this to join the cause!

Oh! You saw the tour? That's the production I saw too (Minneapolis, in february). What did you think of the cast? I thought they were almost uniformly excellent, though it seemed like Keith Buterbaugh didn't really bring anything new to the judge.
Lansbury was a fabulous Lovett. She really brought the crazy.

I've seen both Angela/George (the original) and Patti/George (in concert) and I have Patti/Michael (the revival) on my computer. I must say I like Patti/Michael the best. Angela Lansbury was good, and I loved her "By The Sea", but I think Patti Lupone was creepier and more longing and desperate (do you know what I mean?) and so she was better in the part. George Hearn was just angry and yelling all the time - His voice is amazing but his Sweeney was so boring and static. And Michael Cerveris is just creepy cool, IMO.

Depp sang pretty well, but I couldn't understand a single word Carter sang. Thay may have made it hard to appriciate some of the songs... Maybe if I listen to a Broadway recording of the songs, that would help.
Sasha Baren Cohen did alot better than I expected, and I was also quite impressed with Alan Rickman (his acting mostly, but he sang well, too), and the guy that played Antony. If any song stuck out, it would be "Joanna", because he did that quite well.
... I notice you didn't have modesty in the list. I am a big snob who wants Prince Charming to whisk him off his feet.
As to Sweeney Todd, I found the music uncompelling. Partially this was the singing, and partially because the songs just never went wither I wanted them. Some of them were big dramatic productions, and all I wanted was the chorus repeated loudly with a nice V-I at the end but no.
I liked the gore to a point; for instance I laughed throughout the opening credit sequence with the improbably disgusting ground substance oozing everywhere. The climax though was too much for me, which took from my enjoyment of the movie.
It was at its best when being explicitly comedic, as with Coen's cameo, 'By the Sea,' or the song Rickman sings with the "bum bum bum."
Now let's discuss: *** hags, fruit flies, queer dears?
I haven't seen my *** hag in like 8 months cuz I'm like 7 hours away at school. Makes me sad

In my experience, cute seems to be inversely proportional to putting out. Also, intelligence seems to be inversely proportional to putting out.
I don't know about that. Wouldn't that mean that someone who doesn't put out is likely to be more cute and intelligent?
That would make me some kind of genius bombshell, both of which I can assure you I am not.

It's just the "think of person as nothing more than a body" part that is with any kind of badness, not the needing an itch scratched part.
Presumably it's not an exact formula in such situations.
All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the light that you see. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.

Basically:
S + T = W
...S in this case stands for 'spam' and the T stands for 'light trolling'. And the W? That stands for 'Warning'. I love math. -- {mikeyG}

SPIKE GAYMER: not just a beatdown, a beatdown sung to the tune of "I Feel Pretty"!

And Michael is excellent also.

That would make me some kind of genius bombshell, both of which I can assure you I am not.
*sigh* Imaginary math needs to get its act together.
Shut the hell up.
I'm right there with you!
I totally thought that was something other than "cuts" at first glance.
Also, baby-congratulations.
It's just the "think of person as nothing more than a body" part that is with any kind of badness, not the needing an itch scratched part.
Presumably it's not an exact formula in such situations.
