I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.
In retrospect, after a bit of camp tacronic (more on this after the game) and after Stormblind's mess in Legions, I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to co-mod with me for the upcoming Ghost Town Mafia.
If i had to guess, It'll run somewhere between late September and Mid-October.
Please let me know if interested....it'd be so much easier for me to have someone to back me up. Thanks.
I have even less experience than either Toastboy or Bilb, but if for whatever reason those guys can't help (and no one else more experienced can), feel free to send me a PM. I've always wanted to be the person who giggles on the sidelines as others enact a life-or-death information war.
It's annoying. Whenever you have plenty of new things to say on a game, the mafia choose that time to NK you, but, when you have a sneaking suspicion that the mafia are going to win out of nowhere, and all your cases are off-target, the mafia leave you alive, so the town's loss ends up being your fault
Either that, or the stupid one-shot vig kills you as vanilla town instead of waiting for more scum-tells.
Ok so its not more of a game more of a topic of discussion..
In games we randomly hope for an awesome role, yet what exactly does that mean to us?
Here is my "game". If you were giving the choice of being a (town) Doctor, A (town) Cop, A (neutral) vigilante or part of the Scum which would you choose and why?

I personally enjoy the actual game relevance and power of shooting people. Second for me is scum, because unless investigated I will almost always survive till end game for meta game reasons. Next is cop, because I find it far more fun to play than just guessing who to doc.

Scum to me is the most enjoyable since I find I'm better at scum than at town. Also at town I sometimes get frustrated if I can't figure out who is scum.
As for Ced's question I would probably investigate the under the radar player. Most times if someone's flying under the radar, they're playing a good scum game. Good scum often appear more townie than real townies.
Although its been a while since I've been town with a decent role and survived to day 2.
For me, being scum takes a lot out of the game. For one, there is no scumhunting. And secondly, your job is to create lynches on people you know are town, which sometimes leads to some bad feelings.
Being a cop just makes scumhunting easier, being a doctor takes no effort, just protect the power roles, and being a vig allows you to do things unilaterally. If the choice were a town vig, I would put it above doctor, possibly tied with cop.
As for ced's scenario: the experienced player, unless you think he's likely to get shot, in which case you can hope to use that as confirmation. Otherwise the lurker. If you investigate the scummy player, best case they are scum and get lynched anyways, worst case they are town and you have to out yourself to prevent your investigation from going to waste.
"...and Skander holds on to his custom title "Hasn't been lynched yet." This is the closest he's come to losing it but being killed during the night proves once again that he doesn't hold on to the title due to skill but sheer dumb luck."
For those who don't know what I'm talking about: See Paranoia Mafia. But be warned - it's in progress so no talking about it. I just thought it was funny that I still managed not to get lynched.

Scum, Cop, Doc, Vig.
I like having as much information as possible. Being a one-man team never appealed to me, since if you die, you automatically lose.
Actually, seeing as a cop came up, I have another question to add.
Say you are a cop, and it's in the middle stage of a large game (N3-4). It's not LyLo tomorrow, you can be sure of that.
Anyway, in the previous day, a very scummy player has emerged. Many of their posts have been analyzed, and the judgement has been highly likely scum, one you heartedly agree with. A significant wagon has appeared on them, but it sputtered out before reaching claim point, in favour of the lynch for the day (town or scum lynch, doesn't matter). You expect them to be lynched tomorrow.
However, there's a few other people that you've been keeping your eye on. Firstly, a player who has been relatively under the radar. There's nothing in their play that screams "scum!", but nothing that screams "town!" either. Overall, you have little read on them, less than you want at this stage.
Thirdly, there's a more experienced player, whom you're reading as town. However, the problem is that you always read them as town, regardless of their actual alignment.
Which one do you investigate?
I agree that it makes the most sense to me to investigate the under-the-radar player, but if you think that you could drag that player into the spotlight during the next day and get some answers, then it may be better to look into the townish player, since any public accusations against that player are more likely to be met with criticism.

I saw the thread title when Nom_Anor updated to Day Three and lol'd.
Nicely done, Skander.
Mostly due to the fact im not always on my A game and usually end up looking way more scummy then I tend to be. I think I also want redemtion on being a cop, I still cannot beleive we lost that one game....

Feel free to answer both our questions.
Well I guess my first thought would be "was I on the first wagon orginally"? I would usually stick to my guns with who I will investigate before the night even comes around. In any case, I would look at the player who is UTR before I search someone who I have a feeling is town. I think if I were the cop in this instance I would want to prove that Mr shady quite guy is just a silent townie and if so watch who tries to take him down after I get the confirmation. (And re-read who was already pushing for that wagon as well.)

However, if i could add one more, I'd like vanilla-ness to be my #1 choice.
Couple reasons:
1. Your mafia hunting skills are truely tested, as you've got nothing else.
2. You probably won't be saved by your claim ever, so you've got a slimmer margin of error.
3, though less important theory wise, you have less obligations toward anyone. Thus if you need to replace out, you don't feel as bad. Normally not a problem for me, but recently it has been.

Actually, I've thought of a fourth category (it being the option that I pretended to take in Basic #2, albeit not the one I actually would have taken at LyLo).
There's another player who you could investigate, one who you've been pushing hard on for a day or two, convinced that they're scum. However, there's been very little support for your case from other people, and pushing it to a lynch seems unlikely to happen.
If you had this choice as well, would you stick with your previous choice, or change to this one?
Call me selfish, but I would investigate the person *I* was suspecting to be scum.. That is if there were no other real targets to choose from.
Roja: Hey, it wasn't my fault.
Wait, yes it was.
(though I did out Ande in the first place)
Don't worry I did mostly the same thing against JQLgirl in prehistoric mafia. I nailed her as a scum, and then was easily swayed against her and watch us lose to her. Damn that hindsight!!

That is the purpose of this little exercise.. Sure being a vanilla you have nothing to loose. Do you think having a set roll "hurts" your game? And I guess which of those roles would "hurt" your game the least.

Well thus why i chose vig. I can play that like a vanilla player and my loss to the town is really minimal. Also, i can occasionally attempt to unilaterally overrule the town.

How much is an altered card worth? Specifically, I collect sengir vampires & I saw that someone altered a foreign WB one in the Altered Art Thread and I am wondering how much it would be worth. It's a fairly crude alter (not a full alter) and the guy just gave him a mohawk and a leather jacket.

I think that altered cards are only worth more than usual if they're altered by a popular artist (usually the artist who originally created that card's art) or if the alter is particularly good. I'd say that the alter in question might raise the value of the card by US$1 or US$2, if that. More than likely the value is about the same as an unaltered version.
As a slightly random aside, I'm very glad that I discovered Forum Mafia. I think that it's made me a more savvy person because I've been better able to tell when people are BSing me and I am getting better at discerning the motives of others and understanding their viewpoints.

Wow, really that little, huh?
See, I would start making a thread where I would trade stuff for sengir vampires, but the cost of shipping whatever I was trading would probably be worth more than the sengir vampires (assuming they weren't proofs/CE/something else special).
Well thus why i chose vig. I can play that like a vanilla player and my loss to the town is really minimal. Also, i can occasionally attempt to unilaterally overrule the town.

Altered cards are worth whatever you value them as. Because it will mostlikely be rare for you to give up such awesome card, am I right? That being said, I wouldn't go way over the normal value of the card.. You are changing a magic card..
