Nice to see you again 'Fox. I'm glad to hear that things are going well for you. Life does seem to go by quickly doesn't it? I'm almost done with my first year here at college, and when I look back it feels like its been only a month or two, not the past eight.
It's also incredibly hard to believe that I will be 19 on Saturday. I don't feel like I should be getting older (not that 19 is that old at all), but part of me still feels like the 16 year old that you all met three years ago.
Also, today was the first day I looked at the new sets' spoiler and I have to say, I can't believe they made an entirely multicolored set.*Jokes like that were always made back in the days of Invasion block, and again when Ravnica came around, but I can't believe they actually did it.

I've been training in your absence, friend. Living in Japan too long grants one mystical powers.
Well, I guess I should start with hello. It's been an awful long while, especially considering I mentioned (when I left about 14 months ago) that I might pop in occasionally. I ought to clear one thing up first - I'm not back, merely visiting some old friends. Anyway, I found myself thinking about this place, wondering who was still here and what you were all up to. So I came for a visit.
Well, thank you for being so considerate. Great to see you again, man! It's been too long. There aren't many of us left here anymore, but there are a few still holding out.
To be honest, the only thing that's really kept me here has been the weekly banner contest, and the Avatar and Signature subforums. I closed my own shop a while back due to not having enough time to run it. Later, I ended up joining up with two great guys, Floris (Zaph, formerly Zaphod) and Josh (Spiderboy4), at HighLight Studios. The three of us, as of right now, represent (or soon will) the only three people on the forums to have twenty or more wins in the weekly signature contest. We're that awesome. I've got twenty as of this week, Zaph has one less, maybe (I'd have to count), and lord knows how many Spiderboy4 has. According to the scoreboard, 23. Josh just became a mod of that forum this week, too, so congrats to him, and team HighLight Studios.
I felt I should comment on your post about leaving your job, Mr. Stuff. It really sounds like you've had a fulfilling and enjoyable time out there. I know from experience how rewarding a teaching job is in itself, it's nice to hear someone enthusing about it as I would (if asked). You will find leaving difficult I'm sure, and although I don't know the customs in Japan, the staff and children will find some way of making it all the more difficult for you - perhaps leaving gifts of some sort. Best of luck.
Oh, man. I know it's gonna be rough on me. At the same time, I'm looking forward to moving on - as my colleague Jeremy put it to me, there's only so much you can grow in one job. I'm trying not to think of it as the end of an adventure, but rather as the beginning of a new one. If I dwell too much on what I'm leaving behind, I know I'll just start bawling... I tend to cry very easily, when it comes to crying. I am making a 'memory book' for all my students to sign, and I'll be passing that around during the last week of classes, and also at my goodbye party. I'm excited to meet the new teacher, who, like me, is someone just out of university from the States, and who has never lived or taught in Japan before. I'll get to show her the ropes, introduce her to all the good restaurants, and teach her the ins-and-outs of living over here. She's coming at the beginning of June, just before my last week, and will be shadowing me for the entirety of the last week of classes. At the end of that week (June 7th), she'll be moving into my current apartment, and I'll be hitting the road.
For me, it's been one HELL of a year. As some of you may remember, I too was in the teaching profession when I left you. I was teaching 4-7 year olds at a primary school in my hometown of Portsmouth, England. I had an utterly wonderful time in that job, I don't think I could ever do something professionally that made me as content and happy, or gave me as much determination, or made me as sad as that job did. The sadness was mostly from having to leave at the end of the year. The classes and staff members presented me with handmade cards (by the children, though clearly with some adult help) and presents in a rather touching 'special assembly'. Both me and some of my colleagues were holding back tears, not helped when children randomly left the seated audience (in tears themselves) to hug both myself and the other staff member leaving. So yeah, very emotional but completely the best thing I have done in my entire life.
Amen to that. Congrats man, on a year very well spent. Teaching is so... rewarding, isn't it? At the end of the day, most days, it's like I can't believe I actually get paid to do it, because it'd be worth doing even without the money. *Mr. Stuff raises his glass to a year well spent*
So now what? Some of you may also remember I was re-taking a couple of exams to boost my A-level grades. I had my sights set on a BSc in Psychology, at Royal Holloway University of London. You'll be pleased to know that I managed to DOUBLE my marks. No exaggeration. I attained ABB and got in to my desired university, where I'm currently dealing with all the stress of...first year exams! My year at university is the only thing that rivals my year in teaching as a fantastic life experience. I have had the best of times here, though admittedly let my studies slip a little. The first year is all about finding your feet, though. I don't think they mean that in an academic sense so much as a social and perhaps monetary sense. I have so many new friends in my life that I can hardly believe it. I'm hoping the exams go well enough for me to do it again next year.
I'm living with four really great friends now in London, not Portsmouth. My family are missing me quite a bit, but I'm not so bad. Besides, after exams I get a four month holiday, so plenty of visits. There has been very little that has not gone well in the last year. Those of you that remember me from over a year ago, I had one or two rare but significant troubles across the two years I was here for. Nothing doing in the last year though, it has been relatively smooth sailing. I've become somewhat of a go-to guy for other people's issues, so I've no time for my own ones!
Well well, I believe congratulations are in order here!
*Mr. Stuff buys 'Fox another round*
So, now that you're at university, what do you plan on studying, eh? I will tell you, I made the absolute best friends of my life at university. I still keep in touch with them, and plan on visiting them in the summer when I go back home. I'm sure you're finding it all very exciting. Any clubs or groups to join there? That's probably one of the best ways to meet new people. At my university, there was a swell bunch of guys called the "Video Gamer's Association" that used to hang out in the campus arcade and 'borrow' the TV that was there. A couple of them were in the anime club, and ... long story short, here I am. Life's funny like that sometimes.
There's little else I can tell you now, at least nothing significant anyway. I turned 20 and am loving it. It just sounds much...cooler now that I'm completely out of my teens. I've discovered a new hobby, one that I've taken rather seriously - cocktailcrafting. I'm thinking of taking up-market bar work at a cocktail bar during my second and/or third years at university. As a student it's unusual to have a spirit & liqueur cabinet in your room! That's about it, all my news a few other things to boot.
I hope you guys are all well and that you've all had a good year or so (since we last spoke). Has there been any news that I've missed that anyone wants to share? I'll be hovering around to chat for the next couple of days, though I have an exam tomorrow. I don't know whether you'll hear from me after that, not for a while I expect. It's been nice re-visiting this place.
~Fox.
I've had an excellent year, friend, and I'd be happy to share if prompted. My memory has a way of deserting me at important moments, and I can't speak for anyone else, or shouldn't, really (I'm sure they'd do a better job of telling the tale than I). But regardless, thank you VERY very much for coming back to visit us after all this time. Keep in touch, eh? If you've got a facebook account, look me up: Andy Plants. And if you don't, you might consider one - it's how a large number of us keep in touch these days.
Hey people. Just wanted to stop in and say hey; I feel like I haven't been in here in a while.
Any idea what happened to the new thread? No big deal, it's just that we were going to get a new one and suddenly... didn't.
I'm looking forward to Golden Week, the big holiday here in Japan. I've got one teaching day tomorrow, and then nothing until Thursday of the week after. WOOO! My partner in crime Jeremy has already left on vacation, so I'm covering his classes tomorrow while he's in London visiting the folks.
I'm excited about the break, but for different reasons than you might think. I've only got four teaching weeks left in this job!! Four weeks... it hardly seems real. One of those weeks is only three days long, too, and another will consist of the new teacher shadowing me the whole week. I'm leaving the school, saying goodbye to all my students (which I'm sure will be rough on me) after the first week of June, and my goodbye party is going to be May 31st. I'm still in the midst of planning it, but invitations have already been sent out. I'm going to be using the time off this week and next to look for a job! Hopefully, I'll be able to find something relatively easily, and figure out just exactly where in Japan I'm moving to after the first week of June.
Wow... so many memories I've made here. It hardly seems like it's been a few months, let alone a year and a half. I am super pumped about traveling in June and then going home (HOME!!!!) around the beginning of July, though. It's gonna be a helluva birthday party on July 2nd (my 25th), and again on July 10th (my mother's 50th). My brother's birthday is on the 14th, and my cousin's wedding is the 11th, so I've got more than a few reasons to be home then. I'll be staying for around three weeks, I figure, before going back and enjoying a nice month or two of vacation in Japan and then starting my new job.
Wow goodluck with that mister stuff and definitely good luck with the job searching. Seems like you have alot of exciting things ahead of you as well. Have a good one Stuffs.
Well, anyway, I made it out to Hobby Japan in Matsue this afternoon. ComiSite didn't have any ARB, but Hobby Japan did! I bought 8 boosters. I was hoping to get a Maelstrom Pulse, but that didn't happen, sadly. Here's what I did get:
The worst part? Out of those... NO - zip, zilch, nada - Qasali Pridemage. That makes me a sad panda.
I'm surprising myself by remembering the new cards, though. I can remember what 90% of the cards I'm looking at do, even though I can't read them. And I did get 2 x Intimidation Bolt, which is awesome.
The card I love most out of what I got? Sigil Captain. I can't believe that guy is an uncommon! Can you say casual G/W mana ramp/ Storm Herd deck with Supply and Sakura-Tribe Elder? I know I can.
Qasali Pridemage is indeed awesome it's like a seal of cleansing on legs. Especially since I like to Aether Vial Qasali and Tarmogoyf into play against counterbalance decks. Qasali I think is more impressive then trygon predator but that's just me. I also think Pridemage outclasses nimble mongoose by a large margin too. But anyways you got some nice pulls there Stuffs and Unscythe, Killer of Kings is pretty slick.
Soulquake is also awesome and I think we are going to see Alacar use four of them in a casual deck soon since he's the King of all Johnnies in Casual Magic. Which is more or less an proven fact.

It's really great to see that this place is still up and running, even better to see so many familiar faces still haunting its tables, chairs and espresso machines. After a quick scan of previous pages, it appears I've arrived only a tad late to wish you all and the Coffeehouse itself a happy third birthday//anniversary.
Amongst all of the deck discussion which, if I was still playing MTG at all I would join in with, I felt I should comment on your post about leaving your job, Mr. Stuff. [If I've missed some other important posts in my three-page scan of recent Coffeehouse events, feel free to either let me know or to just leave it, I don't mind either way. I don't want you guys to feel I'm ignoring any of you (even the ones I don't know).]

Wow awesome its good to see you finally post in here its been awhile Fox. Goodluck to your endeavors and your future goals in life as well!
Well, I have been thinking of another new threshold deck lately for legacy. Okay, perhaps it's not that new but with a new additional card that I glanced at the spoiler called Lorescale Coatl he seemed insanely good in threshold. He seems quite awesome in the threshold mirror and an awesome card in general.
This is what Lorescale Coatl does for only 1UG.
Creature - Snake - Uncommon
Whenever you draw a card, you may put a +1/+1 counter on Wisescale Serpent.

Anyway, I need to head to the showers and then get some sleep soon. I have another long day of college tommorrow and of course another hardcore day of studying Chemistry and Calculus. Have a goodnight everyone and see you all later.
Its been far too long since I last saw you in here!!
Life has been treating us all pretty well, though I've been slacking off about making a new thread, been so busy with working and whatnot.. I now work for a place called the National Center for Deaf Health Research, and we basically are educating the Deaf Community, and I've been keeping busy with my boyfriend, we've been doing a lot of things around here, such as visiting the Memorial Art Gallery (a local art gallery here in Rochester) and doing a lot of other fun events
I hope you guys are all doing well.. I should get back to work, trying to get some things done, and probably going to take my lunch now, or soon
Welcome back 'Fox and glad to hear things are going well for you.
That UGx scale deck is exploding all over. I've seen two different ones since yesterday, and this is the third. Hot hot card.
Good to see your still into Legacy Starr. I always considered you as a pretty knowledgeable player about Legacy and you also have playtested against Paul Lynch in person who I have heard was a very good Threshold player. But yeah it's refreshing to see your still studying the format even if it's only brief.
Anyway, its almost 10pm here and I am just glad I don't have to get up at 5:30am tommorrow because it's no school but I do have to study hardcore for Calculus though since I have a test next Tuesday. Have a goodnight everyone and see you all later.
What did everyone do for the weekend? I hung out with my younger brother and sister mainly :).
Oh, btw, everyone should join BotU 14 ;). Link in sig :grin3:.
I had to study all weekend but it's well worth it especially since I feel confident about my Calculus test this time. I am also touching some fundamentals of physics which I understand it alot better compared to highschool of course learning about deriatives is pretty huge in physics.
I'll also check out the BotU 14 later too. Anyway time for me to take a shower soon and then head to bed earlier have a long studying day tommorrow and the day after. See ya guys later.
I totally agree with this suggestion. Qasali has probably been the hottest card in testing in my UGW threshold list for legacy so I am sure if it has a place in Legacy it sure has a place in casual. In fact, Qasali has been so good in testing that I actually dropped nimble mongoose for four pridemages.
Haha, I don't have any Alara Reborn yet. She bought some though. Her first pack? Sphinx of the Steel Wind, the card she wanted the most.
The GW deck's made room for some Skullclamps, but I'm still worried about it. It's untested. Looks like it has potential but we'll see. I might need to make room for Garruk Wildspeaker and lower the amount of Pillar of the Paruns.
Great to see you back, Daidream! I'm at work, about to check my work email and get some coffee for myself before a 9am meeting and getting some stuff done
Welcome back Daidream! Glad you couldn't stay away
My computer fan is grinding itself to oblivion, hard to find a replacement fan for laptops especially this HP proprietary BS. I'm nursing it along, drowning out the buzz with some metal cranked fairly loud. Awaiting the day god knows when, my comp will simply conk out from overheat.
I've been having a lot of second thoughts about my school program. Thinking I will spend much of the spring/summer trying to arrange a transfer. I'm a scientist at heart, and can't hack the role I'm in now where we are not really encouraged to think about causes and effects, but rather just memorize a routine and get to where we can "process" X clients in Y amount of time. It's a good program for those types of people who are efficient workhorses but not great for people who want to discuss the big picture and take things apart.
I think one of the telltale signs I'm through with this, is I actually can't sleep for dread of having to go back to classes next week. Another sign is when the instructor tells students, "You're not here to think, you're here to produce a highly standardized product, and that product is diagnostic images and impressions" I've never felt so much like a cog or a tool as that.
Here is my newest version of UGW threshold for legacy it's been testing extremely well against just about anything. Has a decent game against goblins and other aggro decks and it's mirror match is pretty good. 4 Daze and 3 spell snare is pretty big in the countertop aggro-control mirror. While still having a fairly good game against White splash landstill with gaddock teeg(shuts off wrath of god and engineered explosives) and it's a good alternative to Ad Nauseam Tendrils.
I got home today, I have to be honest, I didn't think I would be this happy to be home. Normally I don't really like my home life, but I think it will be a well needed change for me.
I got home today, I have to be honest, I didn't think I would be this happy to be home. Normally I don't really like my home life, but I think it will be a well needed change for me.
How is everyone else doing?
I am doing pretty good here. Just decided to post in the house before I take off to study for my Chemistry test on monday. Have been pretty busy studying lately for college. Also, I found out today that I got a 100 percent on my Calculus math test which is awesome and looking forward to studying for my next one. Pretty happy about that. Anyway, have goodnight everyone and see you all soon.
Hey everyone! How's it going? I'm back after like 3+ months of no posting again.
Not a ton of new stuff going on with me. Still working, still going to school, though I'm on break right now. I did, however, move again. This time into an apartment with my brother.
My dad moved out to North Carolina, and sold his house, but agreed to pay for an apartment for me and my brother for a year, while we are still going to school. To me, it seems a little selfish, but that's the way life is sometimes. Gotta roll with the punches and go with the flow.
Anyway, I've been having an itch to get back into Magic, lately. The most recent stuff I have is a few things from Time Spiral. What would be the best way to go about catching up? I know some stores won't sell some of the older sets, but perhaps I should focus more on the new stuff since its there.
Interesting no posts in like 2 days. It's cool though. There is nothing really going on here as of now. Just chilling and have school tommorrow which I have a chemistry test I feel ready for it though.
@Buzz: Hey its good to see you back. I always like to buy a couple of packs here and there to get back into the game. I want to get some packs of Alara Reborn but I currently don't have the money right now. It's all good though.
Anyway, I am going to hit the showers here soon and then head to bed afterwards. Have a goodnight and see you all later.
Love,
Cecilia

Life has been treating us all pretty well, though I've been slacking off about making a new thread, been so busy with working and whatnot.. I now work for a place called the National Center for Deaf Health Research, and we basically are educating the Deaf Community, and I've been keeping busy with my boyfriend, we've been doing a lot of things around here, such as visiting the Memorial Art Gallery (a local art gallery here in Rochester) and doing a lot of other fun events
I hope you guys are all doing well.. I should get back to work, trying to get some things done, and probably going to take my lunch now, or soon

Love,
Cecilia
Love,
Cecilia

Looks like a lot of fun Alacar :).
Maybe some Qasali Pridemage's? For added Goodness :).
-edit-
Birthday thread ahoy!

The GW deck's made room for some Skullclamps, but I'm still worried about it. It's untested. Looks like it has potential but we'll see. I might need to make room for Garruk Wildspeaker and lower the amount of Pillar of the Paruns.

Well it's good to see even casual players not lacking in technical skill. You also still win alacar since you designed the deck for her.
It's also good to see you back posting Daidream.
Anyway, it's time to get some sleep. Have a goodnight everyone and see you all soon.

Cecilia

I'm off for now. See ya later.
Windmills do not work that way!
Love,
Cecilia
