So in other news, I went to my first FNM in years last Friday. Played Dos Rakis. Went 2-2 and got 4th. Literally, matches 2 and 3 went to 3 games, and in game 3, bad draws got me. In Round 2, my 3rd game started strong, but when you draw into 3Mizzium Mortars and 3 Dreadbore, you can't quite pull the trigger to end the game. Round 3 was just as bad. I got my opponent to 4 life, but then proceeded to draw into 2 Thundermaw Hellkites and was stuck on 4 land. He was playing Bant Hexproof, so he was able to go on the offense pretty quickly and end the match. Aside from that, I was very comfortable with the games I played. Only caught myself making two play mistakes all night, so thats not bad for being rusty at Standard. Next time, I'm playing Gruul though. Or a control deck, but I have to get searching for stuff for those...
I'm a control player by nature but the "control" decks that are out there at the moment just dont get it done for me. I turned to playing Jund and it's actually been really fun because while it's commonly referred to as "midrange" due to the creature selection, it's actually very much a control-oriented deck with lots of creature removal, graveyard shut down, hand manipulation, some draw etc. It's not the "permission" style that I cant want to try to rebuild once Caverns rotates, but its a pretty fun and well-constructed deck. I'd recommend it.

The only control deck peaking my interest is Grixis. Its very close to the same Grixis I played way back when. In fact, I played Grixis control for like 3 years, starting with Demigod of Revenge and Cryptic Command all the way to Jace the Mind Sculptor and Cruel Ultimatum, so I am about due to go back to my number 1 control deck.
That and the meta I play at is pretty soft, so I can handle it with Grixis.
@The Tournament: Id be interested in Commander, Modern, Pauper or Peasant, or RTR Block. That said, I'm not sure I'm even going to be playing it.
At my game shop they will have a pauper tornoment on the 20th of next month. I built one for the first time haha... It is mono-Green though. Ill post it up if anyone wants me to. Other than that I don't know about any other formats :/

Post your deck once you make it! I'd love to see what you come up with. I've run Esper and Bant control lists. Have been toying with the idea of Grixis but I never played it before so I'd be interested to see the decklist from a person who has played those colors together before
If you dont end up doing well with Grixis, do give Jund a thought. I really didnt think I would like it when I first built it and ran it, but it's really been fun. My list differs from the stock list, I can post it if you're ever interested.

I don't have a list just yet,, but this is the deck I am going to create my own version of here. Like I said, its a soft meta I am now going to, so a fine tuned control deck should, in theory, do very well. Everyone there plays mediocre aggro, with the exception of maybe 2 players. Until I create a good list and get it ready, I am rocking Gruul though.
you guys ever been screwed on cards? I had a deal with a guy I play with that the next big haul either of us find on craigslist or anything would be split down the middle and we paid half each. Well he found one such listing and went out to get it as I was out of town for the night. He started going through it and texted me, "Sorry the value is too high on this one I'm just gonna keep them all." He had pulled lions eye confidants strip mines. Decided that since he physically had the cards he would just keep them. I'm not out any money as I was to give him the half when I got back. he paid $10 bucks for this. I told him I was willing to buy him the 3 geist of saint trafts he wants to split it but nothing. Just makes it hard to talk to him now cause I know he deals dirty.
Sorry again for my absence, I'd some exams this last week and I wasn't able to be online (and I wasn't really successful on them so I guess I should've spent more time here...).
As for the format, I'd say Pauper as I never really played the format that much but it interests me. A close second would be EDH but I'm still getting the hang of it. As for E3 and console games in general, I was actually really saddened to see the fluke XboxOne is. Now, I never owned a Xbox but I played 360 quite a bit with my roommates and it was cool but, really, I've a hard time seeing how the guys in charge of the design could have so many "brilliant" ideas. As it is, I'll probably stick with my PS3 and PC as I didn't dig PS4 either. Have anyone played The Last of Us? Is it any good? I am looking into options as my Winter holidays are coming (yeah, I live on the south half of the globe ).
I'm considering going back to WoW (again) but I have mixed feelings about it.
Did you guys had any luck in MM drafts? I ended up not playing the one on my LGS but the packs were really poor of Modern goodies, or so I heard.
To all Steam users here: Have you guys succeded installing land mods for Age of Empires II HD? I tried to install one but the map screen became entirely black.
Also, Chili, happy to hear that everything went well with the moving and that you didn't have to sell your music collection. I was intending to ask you but I forgot: do you have any recent music discoveries? I'm kinda repeating myself and I'd like to discover something new.
As far as instrumentation I can't (That whole, competition between colleges doing research thing). My current research is in using 'underpowered' devises to make better documentation of prints then people using the expensive devises in the field. Photo technology has come a long way, and the law for acceptable prints were set back in the 70s. I personally find it weird that Joe Nobody can take a picture with a crappy camera, and it would pass the quality test to be entered into court as evidence (Current mega pixel minimum for evidence of prints is 6/8 depending). Hell most phones get that.
As far as processing products, we do most of it manually. MatLab and Python :-p from scratch cause we da best mang. That and if we do it ourselves there are more publications to be made on that end on a side note my first publication will be in a few months!!!! This is a very big thing for me (obviously) and I'll be super thrilled once it hits a journal.
Sorry for the really late reply
That's quite interesting. Why MATLAB over an open source alternative? That sounds cool and I really enjoy coding in Python. Let me know the reference whenever the publication is complete Would love to read it. And, really, that law seems outdated to say the least; it's quite easy to fake a bad quality photo and that seems quite unreasonable. A professor I know works on a similar field, trying to analyze the (pixel) entropy of different kinds of image quality. He uses it mostly to analyze crystallization and fluid mechanics but it's remarkably close to what you do, I think. Personally, I use different techniques to gain more insight in clot formation and reepithelization dynamics.

@ The Last Of Us. I'm enjoying it. IT isn't the game of the gods people seemed to make it out to be, but I do like it. Put about 5 or so hours into it and I'm not bored yet (which is actually a bit odd for me)
@ general research. I'm sure whenever my publications hit I'll come screaming like a little girl spamming them all over the internet But yea, when they actually drop I'll remember to post them here. Out of curiosity what field do you work in? The clot formation seems like a study a couple of my colleagues are working on.
So I'm halting my 'Mono'-Black list until M14 comes out. Doom blade and hopefully Thoughtseize (Assuming reprint) will make the deck pretty good I believe. I jsut wanna cast a sphinx's revelation with a crypt ghast in play :-p

If you like electronics mixed with your metal I found a band called The Browning also Asphyxia (it is aggro-tech so some sort of metal EBM) might be worth looking into. Blue Stahli and Celldweller are also good choices.
If you are into folk metal and don't mind lyrics on a language you cannot understand, I would recommend Svartsot (I understand them since they are Danish, so I am just assuming you don't, since I don't think you know Danish).
I am unsure if I mentioned these before, but if you like melodeath there is Engraved Disillussion, they are one of the better new melodeath bands out there.
Of the bands I mentioned above here, only The Browning would classify as a recent discovery. I could have added plenty of other.
Other bands I have started listening to are: Seventh Wonder, Autumn's Grey Solace (they are ethereal wave, not metal, so listen only if you dare), Melvins (I have no idea why I had missed them so far, they are excellent) and Midnight Syndicate (Darkwave, again listen only if you dare).
EDIT:
I completely forgot to mention some good underground death metal bands, which I don't believe I have mentioned before, not really new discoveries either, but I assume they will be for you: Corpsessed, Mold, General Surgery, Butcher ABC, Master and to top the list I will throw in a funeral doom band as well: Swallowed.
We had a sealed 6 pack M13 draft tonight. didn't do too well went 2-2 but pulled sublime archangel and thundermaw hellkite. He was trying to get them off the shelves to make room for upcoming set and only charged $15 for sealed. Which is 9 bucks cheaper than just buying the packs. Pretty decent compared to what I pulled.

Interesting. I'll probably pick it up eventually but I'm having a blast on WoW right now so I guess I'll stick with it for a while
My undergrad research focus was on photoacoustic spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy (with some hints of thermal lens phenomena and phase-resolved photoacoustic spectroscopy). While I was a sophomore, I learned about image processing and started coding with Python and Mathematica, MatLab and Comsol a bit. Right now, I'm working with Python and SciLab plus some photoacoustic techniques and microscopy to get several images of clot formation and try to analyze it.

That's cool, I'll take the time to listen to all them. Thanks for the info. Personally, I'm listening a lot of Celephais, Year of No Light, AM, Agalloch, Gojira, Lord Vicar, Heretoir, Thy Light (IIRC, it was you that showed him to me :D) and stuff like that. Don't think they will be new to you but maybe I can give some new stuff for you
Edit: I always think about "AM" don't know why but I meant "OM", Al Cisneros' experimental drone metal.

Agreed with the general feel on Garruk here. I am super disappointed. I'm not sure what deck he works in within the Standard meta. Unless there are major changes on the horizon with Theros?

In formats like Standard and Modern, he is pretty much unplayable unless Theros gets us some ridiculous fatties. In Commander on the other hand, I can find some decks that wouldn't complain about having him. I mean, Progenitus is a thing. That said, even my big fattie [card]Mayael the Anima[card] might not use it. Maybe as a late game effect when Mayael is unavailable, but I'll have to see.

In the context of EDH, I'd look at him less as a bad Dramatic Entrance and more as a variation on Lead the Stampede. To me, that means something like an elf or sliver deck.
