It's not like he could really do worse than Homecoming or Origins.
For the most part I actually enjoyed Downpour, except for the incredibly stupid otherworld chase sequences, but it didn't feel much like a Silent Hill game.
I haven't played Origins (or 1 or 3 or 4, yet, for that matter {though I have seen playthroughs of 1 and 3}) but I actually enjoyed Homecoming.
Except for the combat, that was icky. But combat has never been Silent Hill's forte.
I started playing Downpour immediately after 100%ing Homecoming and the controls were too different/weird for me to get a handle on it terribly well. I'll probably try it again in the near future.

You need to drop everything and play the first Silent Hill game. Most people call SH2 their favorite of the series, but I actually like the first game best. 3 was meh. Origins was god awful, and it had a clunky, terrible combat system as well.
I felt the same way about SH4 that I did about Downpour... it was an enjoyable game, but just didn't feel like a Silent Hill game. Although, in this particular case, it was not originally intended to be an SH game. Konami threw in some SH references and changed the name of one character so they could market it better.
I think the designers have wanted the newer games (starting with Origins) to be more action-oriented... in the early games you would find yourself fleeing from enemies more often than not, but the latter ones actively encouraged players to fight their way through.
Well, yeah, Silent Hill has never been known for its combat, as I stated. I've been trying to get my hands on the original for a while but I'm not trying to pay more than like $23 for it or something.
And yes, SH2 is truly great. It was my first Silent Hill game.
Hm, I didn't know that about Origins. So it's kind of like how Devil May Cry was supposed to be RE4? (Or were you referring to SH4 there?)
Survival horror is my favorite genre - resource conservation, fleeing from enemies when necessary, puzzles, some form of mutated and/or undead creatures, atmosphere/music...it's all just so great. I honestly thought Dead Space was perfect in nearly all respects. Especially the atmosphere. I never felt like I could truly relax, and whenever I tried, the game punished me for it.
Some of the puzzles weren't exactly intuitive, but those were few and far between. I think the only thing about that game that I genuinely hated was the two parts where you have to use the turrets to shoot ***** as asteroids are flying towards you. It was extremely difficult in the context of the rest of the game, and it just wasn't fun at all.

I'm a huge fan of survival horror and JRPGs. I thoroughly enjoyed both Dead Space and Dead Space 2 (platinumed both!) and haven't played the third. They're up there with Silent Hill, RE 1&2, Fatal Frame 2 and Forbidden Siren as my favorite survival horror games ever.
Honestly I think the only survival horror game I ever played that I didn't like was Haunting Ground for the PS2.
From Software, the makers of Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, has a survival horror-esque game coming out for the PS4 called Bloodborne that looks insane.

I have both Parasite Eve and PE2, but haven't played them in like 10-12 years. I remember them being good but not great. They have an odd level-up system and you can tinker with your weapons to make them stronger. I do remember thinking PE2 was better than the original.
So I'm on hiatus for regular play but I do want to write a few theory snippets specifically around playing Town that I think about from time to time. May be old hat ideas to some but may not to others and might generate some discussion. Would anyone be interested?
I'd like to read those, DCIII. You were really useful to me in STMUIII, since you helped me a lot to develop my skills, but I still need more developing. Especially in mafia hunting part and not looking obv!mafia in every game I'm in. (Just like you said in Vagrant Story Mafia Chat.)

I heard the second was actually worse than the first RE: Parasite Eve.

KoolKoal: Feel free to take this with a grain of salt since self meta isn't particularly helpful, but I think I get scumread mostly for style over substance, but also for a certain lack of substance over style. It's not so much what I AM posting most of the time (though sometimes that can seem bad) but what I'm NOT posting. I've been told I come to non-obvious conclusions a lot, so when I post, quite a bit of the time there's jumps in logic that people can't follow and they think that's scummy. I get that accusation about a lot of questions I ask specifically. People call them "busy work" when the questions are legit etc.
As far as things to ignore, I can't think of anything. I would suggest you focus less on what I'm doing and more on how I'm doing it. That's probably more likely to be accurate. Like I've just said, what I do tends to come off a little weird, but if you look for how I do it, mindset comes into play and maybe you figure out something useful.

We're in the process of changing over to a new system at the moment, where there should be signup threads for each game type rolling at all times. Keep checking back, and you should see some up before too long. Hopefully in a few days, unless there's some larger issues going on that I'm not aware of.

Well, let me paint a nightmare scenario for you: your pool of warriors that are leveling up and gaining experience have a few traitors in their midst. And as you inch closer and closer towards the final boss, you’re forced to kill one of your teammates — hoping against all hope that you figured out enough clues along the way to be able to correctly identify which one of them is actually a traitor. And after you repeatedly undergo this pattern of trial of accusations and executions (bear in mind this is on top of a full day of combat) you’re squaring off against the final boss, only to have several party members turn on you because SURPRISE, you picked the wrong traitor. The End.
I got a new job, btw! I start next week. Unfortunately, I want something that pays more, so I'm gonna keep looking...but in the meantime, it's better than my current job!
