Hey guys! It's been a while since I've been able to post. Not because I've been especially busy (I am, don't get me wrong), but mostly because my computer was terribly infected with malware that none of my 3 anti-malwares/cleaners picked up. Also, my smartphone is terrible at long messages in the HTML box, so I don't use it for posting if I can avoid it. But fear not! I've been keeping up with the conversations!
I'm about ready to make a horde deck myself. I've only got one person to play EDH with here and 1) I don't want to kill my decks by using the French Banlist (with which I'm not particularly familiar in the first place), and 2) 1v1 EDH really isn't as fun. At least the horde deck can function as a third "ghost player." I'm definitely going with zombies and I'm just going to fill the deck with all the big, splashy jank cards I've got lying around. It should be fun that way! If it's under-powered or oover-powered, I'll fix it afterwards.
Anyways, I'm getting ready for GP Chiba, as well. It's my first GP ever, so I'm pretty excited to see how I do. It's Sealed MM2, so if I pull any valuable cards, I'll drop before having to pass them around. I kinda hope I don't pull that well, though, since I really do want to play the main event. It cost a pretty penny to register and registration was a real hassle, as I had to wait for the second wave of registration. (They initially sold out, but re-opened it with a new player cap.) I don't want that effort to go to waste. Still, if a card is worth the ticket-price, I'll have recouped my losses by dropping. Plus, there's side events!
Speaking of side events, I'm obviously going to play a ton of EDH. The problem is that I'm hesitant to bring my most expensive deck, as I'm afraid it (or cards in it) might get lost or stolen, and that would ruin my day. BUT! I also don't want to lose, as there are prizes. The question is, what deck should I bring? What do you guys think?
Pros: Probably my most consistently powerful deck. I know it can handle a variety of opponents' decks, even other top-tier generals.
Cons: Expensive and thus risky to bring. And it WILL make games last twice as long.
Pros: Very fast. It's gone off t6 before, and is usually ready to go off by t12, so long as I'm not facing more than 1 control deck. Very fun deck, too.
Cons: A little glass-cannon-y. It can whiff easily if I don't have a decent opening hand. Has a lot of expensive cards in it, as well.
Pros: Very thematic and fun. Fairly showy and enjoyable (and easy!) to play.
Cons: Rather weak, as it can't really interact with the Stack. Easily disrupted.
Pros: Disrupts hands and locks down the board like a champ.
Cons: Slower to set up than GAA4. Winning takes a while. Also can't deal with Stack shenanigans.
Pros: Spellslinging splashiness galore! Can do Stack shenanigans. Can generate crazy card advantage.
Cons: While in total the deck isn't too expensive, the expensive cards are ones I value a lot. Can get a little boring to play, and (on the same note) can be disrupted once opponents learn how the deck works.
One general hesitation: I'm wary of playing mono-coloured decks, since Iona is a thing, though each of my mono-coloured decks has colourless ways of removing such impediments. (Of course, actually having that removal at the ready is another matter.)
Most MtG players are good people and value others' cards as much as their own. And this is especially of true of Japanese players. Still, it only takes one bad apple to ruin everything. I don't mind bringing one of my expensive decks... it's just that I've read too many stories on these forums about how someone's deck/cards got knicked. Obviously, I plan to watch my belongings like a hawk, but it's not humanly possible to devote all of one's attention to theft-prevention while trying to play (and enjoy!) a game.
Any advice and/or encouragement is welcome!
Bring Grand Arbiter and be very protective of the deck. I've been to major events like these with two or three decks, I always hold my deckbag/backpack in my front, along with my wallet and phone, and never leave my deck on the table for anything.
I've never been in a single GP in my life. I'd like to go, but since going to GP would require me to travel to central Europe, I haven't gone to any so far. Maybe one day...
Also, I'm really exhausted. I came just home from Finland's biggest (and one of the oldest) role playing convention. I've been working there as a tournament organizer (taking care of sign ups and results was mainly my job). It was really fun, I got to play in a modern tournament, played lots of EDH, got few good trades, attended a Historical Dances Ball and so on. Oh, and ran into Spanish Inquisition.

Role playing convention? Sounds interesting. What happened there?
"Ropecon, the largest non-commercial roleplaying festival in Europe, takes place from 15th to 17th of May in Otaniemi, Espoo. The festival attracts over 3500 visitors interested in roleplaying, card games, miniatures, board games, LARPs. Ropecon is not only about playing or gaming, but the event also has a plethora of lectures and workshops with a wide variety of interesting topics." ~Excerpt from the website.
But yeah. The convention takes over the campus, and there's all kinds of programme all over the campus, ranging from boffer fighting to MtG and Historical Dances (and the infamous Sauna LARP at lakeside). I played a quick RPG event (we used Vampire: The Masquerade instead the good ol' DnD) last night, danced lots and lot of different kinds of dances, took care of MtG tournament sign ups and so on.

Also, it's been at least two weeks since I've actually played Magic (people were out of town, and I was busy with piano-related projects). Hopefully back to normal soon.
To those who've given me advice about the GP, THANK YOU! I really do appreciate it.
I'm only going to bring two decks: Talrand for my buddy to use (it's the one I introduced him to EDH with, and it's the one he knows the best... also, he completely crushed my mono-Black deck with it 4 times last night... bittersweet Q_Q) and either Niv or GAA4 for myself. I really don't know which one to go with yet. I'll probably decide Saturday night, before Day 2, after getting a sense of the player environment.
Regardless of which I go with, I'm going to be uber-protective of my stuff. I'm not planning on bringing my binder. Just the necessities: wallet, IDs, phone, internet device, playmat, sleeves, EDH, and vegan food (since Japanese "fast food" is usually beef bowls... T_T).

Sounds like a good plan, keep those decks safe and have a blast!
Question - for Army of the Damned, does the Horde use flashback, or is it simply ignored? (If flashback applies, then the Horde can just make 26 tokens straight up, or can also make 13 if the card gets milled from damage.)
I play flashback spells the turn after it enters the graveyard, and yeah they play the turn after it is milled too. Makes combat a bit more spicy.
Ah, alright... seems scary. We had some flashback spells before, but we took them out because they were too dangerous and un-fun... but that's because the two cards in question were Creeping Renaissance and Kederekt Leviathan. Yeah, those two are just plain not fair. (Unburial Rites was more fair than those two, but we removed it just for consistency for this.)
I try not to run anything that targets. One thing to do to make it a little more fair is "burn the bodies" meaning you can attack the graveyard instead of the deck to remove things in the graveyard.
Hm... interesting. That's a rule I haven't heard of before, but it's interesting. Still not so easy to deal with a milled flashback card though (since if you attack the Horde's library and mill such a card, it can come back from the graveyard next turn unless you have a burn spell or such handy).
Just want to get an idea of Horde, since I'm seriously considering making a Horde deck. I'm vaguely aware of the rules, but I'm missing the particulars. I tried to refer to the "EDH Variants" section of MTGS, but it's been overrun with Tiny Leaders.
Any clarification is appreciated!
1. Horde deck is mostly tokens, with some (usually non-targeting) spells that are cast as they come up.
- How many cards are revealed/cast each turn?
2. Horde creatures attack each turn, if able.
- They have haste, too?
- How does this work if the Horde has to pay mana to attack? (Like if Proaganda/Ghostly Prison is out.)
3. Any damage taken by the Horde is converted into milled cards. (e.g., 3 points of damage = mill 3 cards)
- Do tokens cease to exist when they hit the graveyard, or do they stay there, waiting for recursion shenanigans?
- The Horde is "dead" when it runs out of cards in the library, right?
- How is flashback usually dealt with? Just automatically on the following turn it was cast?
4. How are "draw card" effects handled?
- Say one of the "survivors" casts something that makes the table draw cards. Are cards drawn by the Horde played immediately?
--- If those cards are played immediately, then tokens just enter the battlefield and spells go on the Stack, right?
5. Are there any other special rules or conditions I should know about when I'm building the Horde deck?
1) Mostly tokens, though ratio is up to you. Mine is 135 tokens, 75 nontokens, while someone else here said theirs was 55/45. As for spells, I do have some targeted ones though.
As for how many cards are revealed each turn, the standard is to keep revealing cards until you hit one nontoken card, but you can modify that if necessary.
2) Yes, they have haste and attack each turn if able. The Horde also has infinite mana at all times (so Propaganda becomes kinda useless).
Also note that in general, the Horde almost never has blockers because of this. If the Horde has something that untaps creatures, or something that causes creatures to enter the battlefield post-combat, it can be a bit complicated.
3) Yes, damage or life loss = milled cards.
Tokens stay in the graveyard.
Horde is dead when there are no cards in library.
As for flashback, that's up to you to decide (though the latter seems more fair).
(Also another thing that applies in my Horde - if the Horde gains life, we give them a "buffer" of that much life, and we have to make them lose that much life before we can start milling more cards by damage.)
4) The Horde draws the cards and plays them the next legal time to do so (so probably on the next turn unless there are instants).
Also, the rules we use are the following:
The team starts with a shared total of 80 life, and takes three turns to begin before the Horde does (and we do draw a card on our first turn).
If we find that a card is too good against the Horde, sometimes we "ban" the card; the rule for this is that if we draw the card during the game, just exile it and draw a new card. (Of course, don't abuse this and fill a deck with such cards to have a smaller deck - in general, keep your decks as they are and just take out the cards when they come up. (Examples: Collective Voyage, Angelic Arbiter, Tainted Æther.)
(Did you see the list I had posted on the previous page?)
That's right, I have another Tarmogoyf now. And now that I have two, I can breed them together and make baby goyfs. They start life out as Undergrowth Scavengers before growing into Boneyard Wurms, then maturing into Terravores and ultimately becoming Tarmogoyfs once they hit legendary status.
I pulled a Tarmogoyf in the GP so I dropped. My cardpool was stupid-good, too (for a Sealed tourney anyways), and I didn't want to give someone else a free pass to victory (in addition to the "money").
I played EDH all day instead as I waited for my friend who had continued in the tourney. I had brought only Talrand with me, and though it didn't win, it seriously impressed and irked enough people that I felt a personal victory. Besides, you got a random pack for a $5 (roughly) entry fee, and one of the packs I grabbed out of the grab-bag was MM2! It didn't have a highly sought-after card in it, buy I was satisfied nonetheless. I ended up selling the rares in DTK pack (1 foil, 1 regular) for about $10 anyways, so that made up for most of that day's entertainment.
Did 4 MMA2 sealed events and no goyf or bob... I just have crap for luck... I did crush someone after offering them a draw (and them declining) for sweet justice tho.
At that point, you are supposed to point out in the sky, shout "Look there!", grab your cards and run out of the game shop as fast as you can while screaming "So long, suckers~~!".
I also ended up buying three boosters. I pulled Bitterblossom, All Suns' Dawn, foil Wrecking Ball and Cryptic Command. This seems like a good place to stop.

As I said before (in other places), the set doesn't really interest me so much as an EDH player. MM1 gave us more Eternal Witnesses and other early Modern cards that are staples in EDH, but not too much here. I'd be happy with some foils of cards I like, but there isn't really anything I need more of in here.

Me either... been too busy at work. Not sure what all I want in there, I hate reprint set symbols (spare cards reprinted in a regular set), so I'll probably look for the original print cards (i.e. Karn Liberated) with lower prices.
On another note, I think I'm all in on Shadowborn Apostle Cleric tribal. It's a bad idea, but so are many of my builds.
Anyways, I'm thinking of building a Zur deck because of these pulls (second Bitterblossom and a Daybreak Coronet just scream "build Zur!"). It would be fun to make an Esper deck finally, but I don't have a large Playgroup (it's just me and that buddy, who doesn't always play EDH because games tend to be really one-sided, depending on whether or not he's borrowed one of my decks), so making another EDH seems a little pointless.
