What about Tariel being used IN Kaalia of the Vast? She basically builds herself, I made my kife a Kaalia deck and its basically every good spot removal(dreadbore, Downfall, Swords, Path, Oring, Journey to Nowhere, go for the throat, doom blade, Murder, Shock, Bolt etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.) And the biggest, nastiest, most ridiculous Demons, Angels, and Dragons I can get my hands on. You don't need a draw engine. You can easily play off of top decking. It just wins. Angelic Arbiter dropping on a swing with Kaalia hosed my friend's Krenko Token Boss deck that had over 200 tokens drop at once, putting the total over 300. Made the mistake of not just swinging, because he top decked Goblin Recruiter and tutored. lol
Eh. As much as I used to netdeck (standard & a few EDH builds), none of the decks stuck with me for long. Building around a theme and an original (or at least not completely influenced by the internet) concept makes building and playing the deck more fun imo. Kaalia has been tried and done. Play boots, play her swing, dump [insert fatty] here; either proceed to roflstomp the board, tank up when the first board wipe comes out, or enjoy being the threat on the board (having the most ***** on the board faster than anyone else). Same ways I view Mimeoplasm, Ghave, and Marath (less so with Mimeo). They all have built in strategies that I've already seen what the commanders can do. If I REALLY want to make a deck that utilizes that strategy, then I'd consider it. 1 of the reasons I took apart Marath was because I saw someone else play the EXACT same decklist! nearly exact. Play Mirari's Wake, Play mana echoes/assemble the legion/mana reflection/doubling season/ivy lane denizen, cathar's crusade, skullclamp, etc etc...AND Then! We had a newcomer the other week! He too was playing Marath! Same build. >_>
Probably has to do with the Comms being the main, flashy, figure heads of the product. But I know what they do. Kaalia, play removal, play Dragons/angels/demons. Swing. Whee! =p It's a bit 1 dimensional. Though that's kinda what my Braids deck does, but Braids is built a bit differently than one would build a Kaalia deck. It's the strongest of the decks and I want it to maintain that title. I enjoy dumping things out with her ability, but having other players join in on the fun. Maybe I get double/triple mana and play Tidespout tyrant + Capsize. It's a 'dick' thing to do in some casual environment, but that's how I made and play the deck. Sometimes I sit back and play support while gifting the triggers to other people. Sometimes I'll have all the fat Eldrazi out and I can't swing cuz the board state is a bit cluster****! And sometimes I don't even play Briads at all and I play a slow "build up your res and defenses" control strat. + the deck is U. I'm reactie and control player at heart, so I love tweaking and playing the deck.
And i'm approaching Tariel the same way. I haven't got any white decks (used to play Jor Kadeen but it wasn't consistent) and I want a home for Stoneforge and Stonehewer. I love Sunforger and Mistveil Plains shenanagins so I want to include that at least. Also Sword of the Paruns. I can see Tariel equipped with that leading an army of silly tokens and what not. =)
so ya. Rants about EDH. Can you tell it's Friday? I've got all sorts of energy today! =)
Just quickly checking in and mentioning I haven't died. Yet.
Currently working a lot for the uni (juggling around phenols, heat simulations, geothermy, photovoltaics and people not delivering the numbers I need ...), kicking demonic butt in Diablo 3 (running hardcore mode with a bunch of friends and occasionally dying to lag, stupidity or a combination thereof) and enjoying the occasional side dish of Magic rules in preparation for the next tournament to judge. I'm currently more often wearing the black and taking care of rules issues than playing myself.
About the commander issue: I somehow transitioned from playing to win to playing to reach the silliest possible board state. If I can go like 'my Oblivion Ring and Beastmaster Ascension swing at you', things are on a good way ...
Whaa..hm...:whimper: get..unnhhhh...quiet inside a me... So you have an Opal O Ring and Beastmaster Ascension?

That was us having a random peasant deck building sesh, but we've been having EDH nights and everything and having an actual place that's mine is kinda awesome for doing things. How is everyone?

Things are good at home. The card playing is commonplace and the ganja is plentiful. Made 120 in commissions yesterday and had a mean pay last fortnight. Oh, and I'm posting from the comforts of my conservatory/session room, in one of the seats I scored at an auction haha
So, I have been thinking long and hard about this, and I have come to a rather sad conclusion.
For the last three years or so, I have given my heart, soul and time to this sub. I have spent countless hours on clans contests, and trying to keep this clan and the sub from dying. And I think I have done a pretty good job on the clan. I have made many, many friends that I will likely keep around forever.
However, since what many believe to be a gross and unfair injustice of last year's CotY, (no disrespect to the crafters, as they have earned everything they have won), I have not felt like I should, or we should, devote our time to what a few other clans have seen as simply popularity contests, as I d=feel that is exactly what they are now.
I can no longer be the leader of this clan if we are to be active and participate in the council. This is a big reason why it is hard for me to stay active these days. Frankly, I want no part in these charades any longer.
I have discussed this with Macius, and he suggested we just remove our self from the council and sever ties with that which we have no real place in.
I would like to open up discussion on actually leaving the council and removing our clan from contests altogether.
If this isn't something the clan is okay with, I will be stepping down as rep and leader. Macius will be taking my place, as is the clan traditions we have set up over the years. I will still be a member of this glorious clan, and always will be, regardless of what is decided. If the clan decides we still need a council voice and a position in contests, Macius has served well in the Shadow Council for a couple years now, and he will make a fine leader and representative for us all.
On the bright side, legacy is getting a boost from Legacy Master in June. I would imagine it will be more than Modern Masters, but the point is, it drove the demand for modern as a format up significantly.

Should I maybe just give this another year? It is not something I wish to do, (step down). I like participating in contests. I like being the leader and rep of our clan and have worked very hard to make it a great place to be. What I don't like is perpetually being burned.
I just feel like what I am doing is not enough, and it is really starting to feel like what I have been doing will never be enough.
You're doing fine in the contests. It just seems like one clan has a massive winning streak (like Ken Jennings on Jeopardy), but the "only" way of possibly ending the streak is if you participate in hopes of reducing the odds of the [Crafters] winning.
...But then again, the point you make about this being a popularity contest does have some truth to it... I mean, while the [Crafters] do seem to do more work most of the time, it seems that is mostly due to the fact that there are more of us working on these projects at a time. (Even with me being "Lazy" and all that.)
If it's a popularity contest, Dimir will never win that. Ever.
If we do or don't, the outcome will be the same.
Digi, I think we should do whatever results in our desired outcome.

I know this isn't my clan or w/e. But I have noticed similar things about the clan contests. I don't say it's a popularity contest though. Some people are more "into it" that others. Those peaople submit more ideas for contests. They are also the ones most familiar with what they submit. So they win a lot. It's like if we compared the worth of all the magic forums with a Cube draft. The limited forum would triumph over Standard, Modern, Legacy, Vintage and EDH easily. Same idea. The crafters tend to be more into the contests, and tend to give a lot of contest ideas. Most of it being stuff they do for fun either way and have a lot of experience doing.

First off, who is judging how much one clan or clan member is "into" a clan contest then another? Second, you said yourself that we are not the only clan that feels this way. Third, and most of all, why, exactly, does anyone feel the need to come in here and defend The Crafters winning. No one in this thread even remotely believe that they undeservedly won CotY or any contests they won, with the exception of that god awful, imo, Podcast.

As I told Digi, I dont mind becoming leader, but personally..... I see little point in praticipating in a popularity contest. Clans dont need to praticipate in contests, as shown by some old and some current ones.
I'm sorry to hear it. You're a valuable member of the Council, and it'll be sad to see you step down (or out). All the best, whatever your decision.
In general (and this applies to everybody), if you like participating in contests, but aren't happy with how they're scored, you are free to offer suggestions. These contests are supposed to be fun for everybody, and if they're not fun for you, then something needs to change. Anything to draw in more participants is welcome as far as I'm concerned.
I liked the original, but lost interest quickly. Though I had no motivatation to play any other class but the Wizard. No Barb or Doctor for me. the Monk is meh, but I should give the Demon Hunter a 2nd go around. That and my computer is a laggy mother****er, so i can't even play optimally anymore. But after seeing the 2min gameplay trailer for the Crusader, I want to play that char SOO badly. =p Looking into getting a desktop PC able to handle the game by the year's end. How's the game so far Jivan?
@Digi, I'd rather see you stay then burn yourself out over contests. If people WANT to do them, then do em. Don't stretch yourself thin and run yourself ragged. =)

I suggest you suggest a contest based on secrecy
Man, I've came up with and ran so many contests the passed few years, I don't really follow you here. I love the contests. So do a few other members of our clan. There is either a popularity aspect to these things not associated with the amount of input any single clan has on their entries or a REDACTED bias.
A contest based on secrecy is cool though. Makes me think...
Technically, there is no rule saying I can't participate in the contests I run. It is just something I always thought was the accepted way of doing things. That is not true though.

Easy there, Logan. Not everyone has access to our secret lair. He was only expressing some of the things I've tried to express to members of the Tolarian Academy. It is not so clear for everyone else.
As I told Digi, I dont mind becoming leader, but personally..... I see little point in praticipating in a popularity contest. Clans dont need to praticipate in contests, as shown by some old and some current ones.
This is true. But contests can be fun. Just with what has been previously discussed is soooooo lame.
I was telling my daughter yesterday that winning wasn't everything because her cousin was beating her in candy land. Then I thought to myself... **** that. Winning is totally everything. Why else even play? To have fun, sure. But who has more fun than the winner? Then I thought to myself that candyland is not a game of skill. So I suggested to my daughter that they go upstairs and play a video game. They ended up playing pvp in minecraft. My daughter dominated him in ways I wouldn't even dominate an eager chubby chick with glasses. Needless to say, Deets had a much better time.
I think I'm going to go with TIEN's advice, though not in the way he I believe he meant.
@Digi, I'd rather see you stay then burn yourself out over contests. If people WANT to do them, then do em. Don't stretch yourself thin and run yourself ragged. =)
@Yomako,
It's not so much that I'm stretching myself too thin. Until now I have been running more contests than I've been participating, it seems. It just seems like we are all putting in so much effort for nothing. You should get in the hideout so you can see what we're all thinking.
I'm sorry to hear it. You're a valuable member of the Council, and it'll be sad to see you step down (or out). All the best, whatever your decision.
In general (and this applies to everybody), if you like participating in contests, but aren't happy with how they're scored, you are free to offer suggestions. We like the new standardization that will be implemented in scoring.
What we would /really/ like is if all contests were judged by... IDK, instead of other clans some outside source. Any contest a Dimir member runs will likely have this stipulation from now on, but we couldn't force other contest runners to do the same. Especially not with all the stuff that's already changed. Maybe when everything else gets accustomed to we will mention this in council.
I love the clan contests, but I don't want to lose Digi's leadership. I'm torn. I like that even if Macius takes over Digi will still participate in the clan, but I do agree that we don't win contests that we put a lot more effort into. I'm on the fence. For now, as long as Digi plans on staying, my vote is to stay part of the council, but that hinges on Digi remaining active in the clan. If it's Council vs. Digi, I agree with Jivan all the way.
I think I'm going to try my hand at this another time.
The clan thinks I'm still doing a great job despite not leading us to that ultimate victory, and that has renewed my ambition.
Anyone wishing to participate is welcome to submit any questions to me in any fashion they can or want to. I have some good questions to consider myself that I will be posting in the hideut after I finish up catching up on salvation.

My daughter dominated him in ways I wouldn't even dominate an eager chubby chick with glasses. Needless to say, Deets had a much better time.
I think I'm going to go with TIEN's advice, though not in the way he I believe he meant.
It's not so much that I'm stretching myself too thin. Until now I have been running more contests than I've been participating, it seems. It just seems like we are all putting in so much effort for nothing. You should get in the hideout so you can see what we're all thinking.
I think I'm going to try my hand at this another time.
The clan thinks I'm still doing a great job despite not leading us to that ultimate victory, and that has renewed my ambition.
I'll fix that right away DA. Welcome back:)

Anyone wishing to participate is welcome to submit any questions to me in any fashion they can or want to. I have some good questions to consider myself that I will be posting in the hideut after I finish up catching up on salvation.
