I think the best planeswalker that symbolizes control that is printed as a planeswalker card would be Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas especially since this clan is called the Tolarian Academy.
So I went to FNM today with my blue black control deck and did decently at 2 wins and 2 losses. My first win was against a Laboratory Maniac mono blue deck with Psychosis Crawler as a secondary win condition.
I played next against a red black curse control deck with so much anti-aggro hate that he practically sideboarded all his cards against me. I lost due to greed on my part and a misplay on Blue Sun's Zenith where I chose him over myself.
My third game was against Genesis Wave ramp where I won 2 of my games and lost 1. To be fair it's difficult to come back from a turn 4 Vorinclex when you have no removal in hand.
My fourth game I went 1 and 2 against Spirit-Blade or Haunted Humans or whatever you want to call it. Instead of alot of removal or counters I seemed to draw surgical extractions, haha.
Had some pretty sick opens today. First pack in a fat pack was a Sorin which I promptly traded in for another fat pack which lead me to another Sorin that I traded in for yet another fat pack.
Other notable grabs were Mikaeus the Unhallowed which is now the commander in my Demon EDH deck. 3 Gravecrawlers, one of which is Japanese, 3 Falkenrath Aristocrats, one of which is Japanese, 3 Grafdigger's Cages, Japanese Increasing Devotion, 3 Grim Backwoods and a foil Japanese Curse of Misfortunes.
Not sure if that Curse of Misfortunes was a harbinger of things to come.. (See what I did there? Haha.) After that I opened 4 Alpha Brawls and 3 Lost in the Woods followed by 2 Jar of Eyeballs and a few other rather subpar rares.
Also my hiatus from novel-writing has ended and now I'm doing revisions on my Nanowrimo project while I ponder how to start another novel I have in the wings that revolves around a doomed romance and the lengths people will go to try to save the ones that they love.
I hope I can get the kinks out of this blue black deck as I'd love to run it in the upcoming Standard Mox Ruby tournament thats going on in Halifax soon.
Perhaps our new Apprentice would like to read back through and add his two cents to it.
Of the contests that I found in Oceanos’ post I would vote for the clan Banner contest and the Cryptic Crossword Contest. I like the Banner contest because it could give me a reason to start doing photo editing again. With the second proposed contest, I really enjoy crosswords and that is why I would like to do that one, plus we could easily make this themed towards control. I would like more info on what the crossword contest fully entitles though before I say we fully support it.
I remember your username! But that's me and my memory.
Why don't you tell us about this Azami deck? ... actually, I'm wondering where my Azami are, come to think of it.
I am glad to hear that I am remembered by some!
The way I built Azami was as a wizard tribal (no real surprise here :p). My main control effects come in the form of a HUGE counter spell package along with a handful of bounce effects with a minor batch of “control magic” effects. I have a few paths that the deck can take to victory. I feel this is required because if you have one path to win then it is often times more easily hated out by opposing players. The paths I choose to use for the deck were: winning the game from multiple activations of Memnarch and taking control of all my opponents’ permanents, Swinging with a big Palichron or Kozilek, or an infinite combo in which I have placed a few in the deck. My main troubles with the deck currently is that I have built it to accommodate both 1v1 games and 3-4+ player games, so this makes it decent at both games but not excellent at one or the other. I have considered creating a sideboard so I can swap cards depending on the amount of players but I am unsure if I really want to go this far. The other issue I am having is that opponents -1/-1 or more effects really hurts my deck considering that most wizards are 2/2 generally. I usually try and keep them counterspelled or bounced off the table but I find that really challenging of a task in multiplayer games.
If you desire a full decklist I will post it up here so that you may look at it.
I am sick.
On the plus side, the bug will have passed national borders today, so... I actually don't know how this is a plus side.
On the minus side, I can't think of anything. Even after the previous remark.

I am playing Soul Calibur V. Wow soo many changes, damnit its like learning a whole new game all over again. Seriously changing the input of Guard Impacts? It would be like changing the motion of Ryu's fireball.
Its purty though. And we finally got to see Elysium. Nightmare's equal and opposite in Soul Calibur. I have most of the characters, I am missing Algol and Dampierre. Right now I am using Raphael, but I don't think I will be sticking with him.
I think I shall main Algol. Fancy powers and no pants are just what I want. And unlike in IV you can even dress him...if only I could unlock equipment I actually wanted to wear.
I dont do many fighting games, less Super Smash Bros with my son. I never got serious about it.
I recently took my son to see WWE Live. (World Wrestling Entertainment) it was quite the awesome experience less then 6$ drinks, and monster merchandise bill I acquired. He had a blast though, so that is all that matters.
EDIT: Also Irmis, you really should change your under-title........

Why? I didn't get a letter from Xanth stripping me of said title. Until then I am pulling a Volrath, I am stepping out, not down.
After reaching level 40 on Skyrim, I decided to start over. So I am level 1 again. Well now I am like level 10. When I reach level 40 again, I'll be even stronger then I was before. If there is a such thing as too much power, I haven't discovered it yet.
Oy, back to killing bandits and wolves and making iron daggers to max smithing. All this before I even do the first quest, I should walk into that low level dungeon with some high ass level equipment.
you, you'd think the smith would actually havta... level up his smithing, y'know, take it to the next level, in order to.. continue to rise in .. experience level
AAAA well there's the TES levelling system flaw for you.
Now I have some business, and a troubled message.
Irmis, Mindslavor: Please throw a brick at Ilvaldi. Now by brick I don't mean a brick, because that would be assault and would get everyone into trouble. Just send something on his FB. Force him to archive a draft with you.

I am struggling to find where my time is going. And I don't mean in a generic "omg college" sense; I mean I am deepy concerned and there's no way it should be taking me this long to do my assignments to their basic level, and have no time for outside reading, so little time for my research, and just like 20 minutes for posting here / FB.
But I don't know how to bring this up as an issue with my instructors. There are classes where the instructors have, without me saying anything, said about giving more time is not a problem if I ask... been -too- giving about that and it bothers me. These classes are also the ones where the work is not holding me back. What I'm troubled y is these other courses where the material is much deeper and we are only scraping at abstractions right now - nothing we're doing is useable, none of the expertise we're acquiring is 'problem-solving' (it won't solve a problem in a real-world scenario; it's not enough yet)... and, so, as I go through the work, I wonder if I am supposed to know more than this. Am I ready for the tests?
Wil I graduate with any abilities at all? I mean, am I supposed to expand ont he course? If being led around by the nose is not enough, then where is my time to do so?
There's several problems here, and it's also a bother that I feel strangled for the time to sort them out. Booking an appointment to see 'my program co-ordinator' is hours I don't have this week.
Ugh. I work ahead and take one day vacation to play games, and then...

Ah, this reminds me of my days playing RPGs. I have since then
Moved on to MOBA's and some first person shooters. I used to spend countless hours though the beggining stages of a game and farm all the xp and gold I could before moving on the the next area. Most recently this was done with my Pokemon white. My lowest Pokemon was always about 3-5 levels stronger them the gym leaders strongest Pokemon.
Btw, what games is everyone currently into? I play magic(ofc :p), league of legends, call of duty mw3, Starcraft 2, pokemon, and guildwars. I am very eager for Guildwars 2 to come out later this year!!
I did it! I strolled into that dungeon with the 2nd best light armor there is. I kicked names and took ass! My meatshield died though. But I got another meatshield from the Jarl for protecting his people from some random dragon. I hope she doesn't die as well. Although after I get a couple of Conjuration spells I'll probably just fire her.
I haz Smithing at level 78, almost there. And I have some dragon bones and dragon scales, I should be strolling around in dragon armor soon. Then I need to get the light armor skill up, which involves taking damage while wearing the armor. Its as easy as it sounds.
The difficulty on SCV comes in either: Too damn easy or unstoppable. Not alot of in between.
I hate when games are like that. I often find that with the Madden series. It is too easy after a while, even on legend. But if you tweak the sliders, its becomes impossible or un-fun.
I play WWE 12 and that is it. I play it with my son. I wish I had more time for games. I still golf fairly regularly, but not as much as I would like.
Meatshields still makes me giggle inside when I read it. So Irmis....

Okay, so now that I have finished building my Azami EDH deck I am looking for a second deck to work on. My plan is to build 5 decks each one showcasing a different color paired with blue. The generals I am currently thinking of is Jhoira for UR, Edric for UG, Hanna for UW, and Grimgrin for UB. My goal of the next deck is for a multiplayer control theme. I was looking at Grimgrin for this as I could build a Zombie Apocolypse theme deck and have the control subtheme.
So for starters I am thinking of having most of my creatures if not all of them be Zombies. Next thing I want to consider is card advatage that doesnt paint a target on my forhead. Also I want to go over effects that would target all my opponents such as Syphon Mind, or Syphon Flesh...
What is your guys opinion? Think that grimgrin could potentially control a multiplayer game and bring on the apocolypse?
On a side note: I have decided I want to set up an aquarium but I am torn between whether to make it freshwater or saltwater. The main reason to set up a saltwater over a freshwater aquarium is that the fish are more colorful and less seen in most homes. Some of the downsides are that you need a bigger tank because it makes it easier to keep the water quality stable, also you have to have a heater as most saltwater fish you would buy in a pet store are of tropical origins. I know that saltwater is more time consuming in upkeep of water testing etc etc but I enjoy doing that part of the process so that really isnt a deciding factor for me. Does anyone here have an aquarium as a hobby?
We had a 75 gallon salt water aquarium like 15 years ago. The fish were so purty just don't touch the Lionfish. The tank was high maintenance though, after awhile we wondered if it was worth the trouble. We decided it wasn't and stopped buying fish.
As for Skyrim...where are all the dragons! My previous character faught like 25 of the bastards, my new character has fought a whole 3. I need their scales to make armor, they need to start showing up!
Speaking of, Skyrim enemies are strange. I fight generic bandit 3 and kill it in two hits, turn to the right and face generic bandit 4...and he damn near kills me in 2 hits. Generic bandit 5 might as well be attacking with a toothpick. The Bandit Chief is as weak as bandit 3. Was Bandit 4 on magical steroids or something?
I have noticed that people do not quote much in this thread... Is it an unspoken rule or just not something people here tend to do? I can do post either way I just find quoting to sometimes keep comments on different conversations more organized.
As for the aquarium, that is a very nice size aquarium. Have any pictures? I used to have a 150 gallon freshwater aquarium set up in my house that my dad took care of and it is that tank that actually originally started me on my major of marine science. I loved working with him to handle the problems of the tanks and getting the fish etc etc. Great memories with my dad from that tank. I am not allowed to get a tank that big though again, I still live at home and after cleaning up after the time it broke she swore never to allow one that big in her house again.
As for skyrim I have sadly not played that game yet, I feel I might lose myself in the world of skyrim and never be seen again lol. I have a habit of becoming addicted to those games very easily.

My policy on Pictures is the same as my policy on prisoners: take no. I never did like the fish tank, to me it served no purpose. The fish weren't useful for anything. Well the lionfish we could probably throw at people if they tried to rob us.
For awhile we had the saltwater tank in the basement and a freshwater tank in the living room. At first it was special, then the fish just ended being hungry bastards that don't really anything...so just really small children.
There is no way in Skyrim to level Enchantment or Alchemy that isn't tedious. But I'll still do it, if I can max that trio, Godhood is mine!!
Speaking of, Skyrim enemies are strange. I fight generic bandit 3 and kill it in two hits, turn to the right and face generic bandit 4...and he damn near kills me in 2 hits. If 'bandit' meant anything reliable they wouldn't need to steal to make rent.
Duh.
Dragons are probably a character power level detection thing. Sowwie, but those smithing skills aren't sword swingy skills.
What world is Edric from? Is Trest a Ravnica state post-Guildpact? Is he on Bant?
Abe, what does suicide black look like in the format? I tried to make one in... what was it... Mirrodin-Fifth Dawn Kamigawa climes? Or Mirrodin Onslaught. It was terribad. It curved but it lost 10 life to play average creatures. Fail.
I tried mixing it with Mindblaze and Choice of Damnations, to no avail.

That is sad you view fish that way. I love them, they are pretty to look at, good conversation starters, and dont require as much attention as say a cat or dog.
I honestly dont know what world Trest is from. I never really got into the storyline of magic. I tried to google it but all google gave me was testing instead of TREST
Sweet. On Skyrim there is an NPC named Ma'iqe the liar. He's a pacifist and nobody will help him. I found him on a random lonely road. So I hid from him, created a magical bow, and shot him in the back. Ma'iqe cannot die, when dropped to 0 HP he just kneels for 10 seconds then stands up at full health. Since the shot from being hidden kills him in one hit combat never technically begins...so he doesn't run away. I stood up on that hill and shot him dozens of times...getting back at Archery, Sneak and Conjuration. Good times...except for Ma'iqe but he's a damn liar anyway.
I'd say cats require less attention. You don't have to test cats for temperature, pH balance, try to avoid overfeeding them and so forth and so on. Cats are pretty independent. Most cats will ignore you until they want something from you, that is pretty low maintenance.
LOL! Grats on finding a loop hole within the mechanics of Skyrim. So how much time have you logged into this game?
I understand your points with cats but you still have to feed them more often then fish usually, you almost daily have to give them water, you must clean the kitty liter (which usually also smells worse then fish) and I dont know about your cats but I have 4 in my house and they want to be pet daily. They are way more upkeep then our fishtanks ever were.
Also on a side note, I have found myself with my eyes in pain and headaches from staring at a computer all day at work and then coming home and gaming. I did some research and found some "sunglasses" specifically made to lower the strain from gaming. I just got a pair and will try them out tomorrow. Updates as to thier effects will come later. Figured I would share for the chance someone else has a similar issue.
Made a post in the Skyrim thread. If I cared more, I'd copy-paste it here.
I have an NPC stuck shoulders and up in the road outside Whiterun. Every so often I walk my horse over to him and take funny pictures.

Also: If you have worked on the Mascot further, it is due quite soon.
Entry submissions are due on or before February 10, 2012 at 2:34PM EST AND Judging submissions are due on or before February 17, 2012 at 2:34PM EST. Don't be late.
My current character is 31 hours old. Wow they grow up so fast.
Poor Oceanus is bored with his character. I should start questing...soon. I've completed a couple just enough to get the gold I need since in the beginning smithing/enchanting/alchemy are expensive. All those fluffy skills +Conjuration, I just walk around creating stuff or improving stuff. I turn bars of iron into soul sucking epic daggers!!
On the other hand, I am pondering a UG deck that plays with tempo in someway, since I always find that amusing. I think I haz the cards to pull that off, I just need to think of a good grand finale.
I do believe that invaldi was working on the mascot, not sure how to get in contact with him to see how it's going though.
---
Very nice, the most time I ever spent on a character was 3500ish hours over a few years. And that was one of my 11 I played in the game. The total time before my account got banned was near 5,000 hours of logged time. Needless to say I didnt sleep for a few years.
Would this UG deck be for a certain format or just table top casual? And with that what other cards are you currently thinking of for this deck?
---
My final cards for my EDH Azami came in today!!!! I can't wait to start playing with the deck!! The density of card advantage and counterspells is just amazing, and when combined with some boomerang effects she will have the table under my control in no time mwahahahaha

We will front-page that ****.
I played a Necro and a Druid in D2:LoD back in the day. Patch 1.09. Quit just before 1.10. I don't know how many hours, but I cow level'd the Druid to like level 78. Then found I pretty much didn't enjoy anything more than whackin cows with maces. That ... druid set. And Werewolf form.
Back on the sunglasses: Rig up your desk to have an indicator for when to clean the lenses. Somehow. So it's right there. Use tape if you have to.
But, it might only be me who has to clean lenses so often because of my full, gorgeous lashes.
My cousin has ridic lashes too. Like a full makeup suite, without doing anything to them.
Irmis! I have zinged you twice in two posts! If I zing you in the next one you owe me something.
Ma'iq actually always tells the truth! He's even honest. He was branded a liar because of his babbleyspeak and his heretic proclamations.
No one made contact with Ilvaldi? *sigh*
I hope he's okay. y'know. He mighta been taking this seriously.
Ah well. We can review the story and clan identity anyway.

I'd say cats require less attention. You don't have to test cats for temperature, pH balance, try to avoid overfeeding them and so forth and so on. Cats are pretty independent. Most cats will ignore you until they want something from you, that is pretty low maintenance.

Like, in 10-ish hours.
