Habanero Sculpin from Ballast Point. Honestly, I really can't tell if I liked it or not. Great taste, but it stings right in the back of the mouth on it's way down. Like a good amount of heat. The brewer says "a pinch of heat" but goddamn that's a lot. It's a really weird combination of flavors--I kept drinking it, but probably won't have it again. Odd.
Actually, I'm not a huge fan of Rochefort. Had some bad experiences with them being way too foamy in the mouth.
I'm not a fan of their 6 and 8, but their 10 is pretty much the definitive quad as far as I'm concerned.
I should see if I can get my hands on Westfleteren
Westvleteren is very difficult to get, because they don't work with a distributor and insist on only selling at the abbey or a cafe nearby. You can find it sold as a gray market good, but the people who sell it will demand much more than it's worth. In my opinion, Rochefort 10's a better beer.
What's everyone's take on the Japanese Beer market?
My fiance and I went out to a hibachi place the other night for dinner and I had a Sapporo on draft. It was nice, very light tasting and didn't have a very upfront alcoholic taste to it. Another time at a different hibachi place I had Kirin Ichiban...also very good.
Enjoying straight trash this Labor day---Corona Lights, NYF Root Beer and Yeungling Light while doing some yard work.
It's almost three o'clock here and I'm already trashed.
@ RedKid43 : Asahi is my go-to beer from Japan. Taste is great!
I learned recently that Blue Moon, a Molson Coors beer that I once drank when I was in San Francisco, is coming to Canada. I loved this one so much. I'd like also to get my hands on some San Miguel : it was the only thing I could drink in Zaragoza and I always had that taste in mind. But, not available here in Montreal
My favorite beer story was from last summer. Was up at my fiance's place in Canada and one of her cousins brought this cooler of beer. She told this cousin that I was into craft beers and he goes through his cooler and grabs this bottle and hands it to me. "I got this American microbrew--I've never had it before have you?" It's shocktop.
Just drank a Broken 7, microbrewery from Montreal (http://broken7.ca). It tastes just like the Damn Estralla in Spain, which is the quintessential commercial beer in terms of quality (gold medal at the worlds in 2013-2014)! If you can find both of these, guys, help youself and grab a bottle!
Christ, you people are a bunch of ******* heathens. How can you guys discuss beer without discussing the best beer in the world: trappists?
La Trappe double.
Well, some of the Trappists are the best in the world. I wouldn't put Chimay, Orval, or Achel among them.
But Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel are pretty much always crowdpleasers. Rochefort 10 is a great quad, and used to be my favorite beer. Westvleteren 12 is great, but is extremely difficult to get.
Incidentally, there's been two recent Trappist additions in the past few years. St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, MA is the first American Trappist brewery, brewing Spencer Trappist Ale, which is a Belgian pale ale. Solid, but pricey. Then there's Engelszell in Austria. And in 2014, breweries have opened in the Netherlands and Italy.
I do agree Chimay, Achel and Orval are not up to the standards of the best trappist beers, but I simply love Achel Brune.
easily my favorite Dubbel.
I'm an Abbey beer enthusiast in general.
the trappists, Affligem, St Bernardus and the likes are always welcome in my refrigerator
My fellow beer advocates, devastating news on my end.
Today one of my dogs went in for dental surgery to remove some bad teeth. During the surgery he went into cardiac arrest. After multiple attempts, he wasn't responding. He slowly died.
I am in total shock and awe by all of this. He was 4.

This one is for him.
Cheers.
I'm sorry to hear that. Honestly, I began reading your post and when you mentionned he passed away, I felt something inside, knowing the fact that when a dear one (human or not) leaves us, you feel a sort of endlesness, a strange emptiness. I feel you for real.
I learned today that a friend of mine will have a surgery Friday for a brain tumor, that my aunt will have an operation soon for ovarian cancerous cells and that my dad is having a threatening infection (he has Crohn disease, so his immune system folds to anything).
Holy crap, those are some horrible circumstances, guys. I'm glad we have an outlet to express these things in a place that hopefully, being that it is a thread about beer, will provide a bit of levity in the face of it all.
Sorry about your dog, RedKid43. And I wish all of your people well, TomCourtenay.
With regards to beer, I am very much a fan of the Weihenstephan Brewery. Weihenstephaner Original is my usual go-to beer, and I'm a fan of their Hefe-Weissbier.
I attended a friend's bachelor party a couple months back up in the Sacramento, CA area, Auburn, to be precise and was incredibly surprised by Knee Deep Brewing Co. Their range of IPA's was phenomenal ranging from your more standard single IPA's to Quads with top notch balance and tasting notes. I personally had their Midnight Hoppyness which was an imperial black rye IPA that unseated my former favorite (Firestone Wookey Jack) and their Hoparillo and Simtra, both triple IPA's that are head and shoulders above anything I've had to date. They were all astonishingly drinkable despite the high alcohol content and ibu's. My only lament is they don't readily distribute in AZ. I would recommend them to anyone who likes good strong beers and can appreciate nuance in craft. I've been to many breweries along the Pacific Coast: Ballast Point, Stone, Russian River, and North Coast among many others, and this one is right up their with the big boys. Do yourself a favor and seek them out, definite diamond in the rough.
Thabks for all of your support guys. The last day has been horrible...
I found out right before job number two. Went in and saw my supervisor and just lost it. Thankfully she understood and my co workers were there too. I stayed composed for about 6 hours, then lost it again for my entire commute home. My other dog has been looking for him all night, but I think she's starting to understand. My parents are devastated, my fiancé is devastated and my sister is too. It's so incredible that such a little thing, something that doesn't even talk or completely understands you, would have had such an impression on our lives.
As the great Taoist Winnie the Pooh says "How happy am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."
Last night was filled with alcohol. Picked up a strong one from my friend's place: Dragon's Milk. Brewers in bourbon barrels, high APV, and deep vanilla notes. Two of those and a nip of Patron and I was gone.
If I'm picking something up for a party or a night of drinking, I typically go for something cheap but agreeable like Blue Moon or Sapporo (or Angry Orchard in one of its many flavors, though that's not a beer). If I'm buying for a smaller group or myself, I tend towards Shock Top Belgian White. If I'm feeling especially fancy though, I'll go ahead and get a bottle of Allagash Black, which is my favorite beer as of this moment.
For fans of Blue Moon: have you all ever tried Hoegaarden?
Hoegaarden is a classic : the best part of it is the glass, which is has huge as a swimming pool! So while waiting for Blue Moon to come to Montreal, I'll drink some Hoegaarden in bars.
Unibru, tasty, tasty hat beer. La Fin du Monde is one I always try to get when I can.
Living just south of Atlanta is actually pretty good for my beer desires. Last time I was at the Vortex I had a Plum sour by Orpheus that was surprisingly delicious. As for what I've been getting on the regular Monday Night's Fu-Man-Brew has been my favorite and have been getting it every time the paycheck leaves room for it.
As for a question posed earlier in the thread: We get Dogfish Head 60 and 90 at my local grocery store and they're the only IPAs I will drink.
I was in Chicago this past weekend, and tried a glass of Red Velvet from Baderbrau, which is a brewery local to the area. Pretty tasty stuff. I haven't looked into seeing if I can get it around me yet, but I certainly intend to soon.

I got my hands on a Stone Thunderstruck Double IPA over the weekend. Very good beer. Kinda strange to say, but one of the prettiest pouring beers I've seen, looked like a golden nectar of the gods in my snifter. Lacing was superb. Very drinkable citrus-y DIPA. This beer is a limited release, so get 'em while you can.
It's Friday...so that means payday and some nice beers. Got a little flight for y'all tonight
First up, Ommegang Rare Vos. Nice light amber ale with a good amount of citrus notes and a little spice in the back of the mouth--nothing too overbearing, but awesome and sweet. This was great, and certainly a recommendation if you can find it.
Next, Trappistes Rochefort 10. My buddy who works at a liquor store, and has a good read on my beer tastes from college nights with Magic, brews, and some wacky tobaccy, handed this to me and told me that I would love it. I may like heavy beers like Guinness and the like, but I'm a total addict for Belgians/Trappists. But godDAYUM is this one hell of a beer. Got good fruit notes like fig and raisins--yet a good strong finish. Incredible.
Apparently, the Rochefort 10 goes really well with Matcha Pocky. Whodathough?
Finally, Weyerbacher's Blithering Idiot. It's heavy with a nice fruity finish to it. An English style ale, so it's warm and welcoming. Again, an awesome beer and I would certainly drink this outside of pairings and more refined setting. New favorite for sure.
