Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose — in the bathroom with a hypodermic needle still in his arm — inside a Greenwich Village home on Sunday morning, cops said.
This is really disturbing to me... one of the few actors in Hollywood I had any creative respect for.
Oh my God. That's maybe the last thing I saw coming. An enormously talented actor, one of the few I go out of my way to see everything they do. Sad news.
I wonder how this will bode for the last two Hunger Games movies. As I understand his character is a role-player in the books.
Too early to say for certain, but Mockingjay Pt 1 has completed filming and from what I hear, his character is only a major player in the first part so it's possible that Part 2 will be altered to replace his role with another character or written out entirely. Obviously, hours after the man's death things are not set in stone.
It saddens me to see the depressing outcomes of addiction. I feel so bad for his loved ones who were on this ride with him only for it to end this way.
Everybody has their favourite performances, but for my money he was never better than the one-two-punch of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and The Savages, both 2007, both completely different, fully realized performances. He never went for broad or caricature, he always wanted to show us real people as they were.
There has been a ton of people ODing in the north east recently. I think it is due to cheap and powerful fentanyl analogues being readily available online to any scum bag drug dealer.

Is there some form of drug dealer that isn't a scum bag?

Yes, this is on the radar for the north east (more specifically, in and around PA). Lots of Heroin cut with Fentanyl causing a lot of ODs.

I'm not really a fan but I'm always sad to see drugs end someone's life. If you feel that life isn't pleasurable enough without hard stuff like heroin or coke you should seek help, not get high. This same story plays out thousands of time each year and I wish we spent more money on real drug education in schools and comprehensive, affordable rehab than on midnight drug busts and incarcerating drug addicts without rehab.
Fine, something decent. This will be sad for Hoffman's three children, his romantic/de-facto partner, his family, his friends, his fans and the dudes behind that trilogy [ninja: Hunger Games, Pt. 3b], though most, if not all, of Hoffman's scenes have been filmed and are solid.
TBH, I am not too surprised that this would happen, given the prior history of alcohol and other drug issues. What is surprising is the déclassé way of dying, with a needle in one's arm.
As a general comment, it is sad that other matters do not receive as much attention or discussion compared to this, which is otherwise very topical and trivial.
I do not dislike Hoffman's work in general, in whatever roles he played in life - actor or director - but I do not like it either. However, that is generally speaking; specifically, I thought Magnolia was something special, and I hated the hell out of Synecdoche, which has marred my appreciation of Kaufman and any of the people associated with the film.
Still, what a way to live in the world and to leave it (if, indeed, this is a thing. Some are suggesting that this is a hoax :-/).
Well it seems we're all in agreement. One of my absolute favorite actors. I looked forward to every film he was in and would watch his films just to enjoy his performance. This is a real bummer.
One of few the actors today whose performances I truly looked forward to and could make me enjoy a film just by being a part of it.
Wow, really?
Hoffman is a guy who had much promise in his early days and talent in his latter days, but it seems that he is very polarising; there are two main camps, those that fanboy him who claim that he is the best thing since sliced bread and there are those that dismiss his acting chops, claiming that he is over-rated.
RIP, a tragic way to go, he will be missed.
It is undeniable that ODing is not a very classy way to call it in, but tragic? I don't think so; the silver lining is that Hoffman has now moved on and is no longer struggling and suffering from his addictions. He is, as the cliche goes, 'in a better place'.
Those of us who are still alive, this might sound a little strange: don't dwell on mourning his passing; celebrate his life.
I guess that cancels out the possibility of a Big Lebowski squeal. Dude was one of the few real actors working in the industry and ill miss his level of commitment in this Micheal Bay/I Frankenstein/Tyler Perry wasteland we call Tinsel Town

Yes, I consider it a tragedy that anyone's life would end because of addiction to a chemical high. While there is as you say, the "silver lining" that he is no longer suffering from said addiction, it's still only the lining surrounding the very large raincloud of the man being dead and his children no longer having their father.
...this might sound a little strange: don't dwell on mourning his passing; celebrate his life.
That isn't a strange statement at all. I say it often, whether its the passing of an entertainer, friend/family member; its how I would like everyone I know to deal with my passing.

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.
Anybody else think it's crass and tasteless for the police and media to trumpet the grisly details of his passing? If his family wanted to talk about those things at some point as a possible way to dissuade others from going down the same path of ruin, that'd be one thing. But for random strangers, especially law enforcement individuals charged with protecting and serving, to shout to the world that the man died with a needle in his arm on the bathroom floor in his underwear surrounded by a hoard of narcotics is reprehensible. No one is just a worthless junkie. In his case, he was a son and a father. It'd be nice if government officials and national media journalists would exercise some ******* decency once in a while. Compounding tragedies helps no one.

Fentanyl isn't even the worst. Not too long ago a veterinarian from ND extracted the active agent out of big game tranquilizers (like elephant big game), mixed it with powdered sugar, and sold it to a drug runner as heroin. Twelve people in my state overdosed before a medical examiner even figured out what it was. The LD is so low it wasn't detectable with standard tox screens. When they finally found the guy distributing it to dealers, 26 people are known to have ODed as a result. He didn't even know what was going on. After he told LE who his source was, he committed suicide. The vet pled out for 20 to life.
And so it goes.

He was definitely a talented actor who had a few stellar roles (Capote comes to mind) and was definitely a popular fixture of Hollywood.
