Found this dead bug in my apartment and set a live one free. Anyone know what kind of bug this is? My apartment is in western PA.
Never seen one of these before.

Cicadas? Really? Those sure don't look like the big fat disgusting brown ones we get here in Ohio. I know there are different broods and types, but that's not even close to the ones I'm familiar with in color, size, anything!

If you look, there are dark ones with mottled wings like the above. But honestly, I don't know specifically, the OP's description just made me assume it was Cicadas.
I happen to work at a place with a Ph.d in entomology so I asked him as well. He indicated it's a hover fly (bee fly) in the genus Xenox and is one of 4 species but could not tell me which without the specimen in hand. Some google action confirmed. The more you know!

EDIT: Apparently Pennsylvania got cicadas this year (brood II, 17 year emergence cycle) but they peaked a few months back. IDK much about insects.
Art is life itself.

1. This is way too small. Most Cicadas are 1.5 inches, which is larger than a half dollar. This insect is smaller than a nickel.
2. It's legs are too long. It's body isn't large or bulky enough. It's eyes are too big and I don't there are many Cicadas with Mottled wings.
AFAIK, most Cicadas have around the same body size, shape and style, but with different colors on the eyes and body.
It's definitely a fly of some kind. It's a bit too fat to be a deer fly, but the mottled wings it has remind of them.
