I've lived in the West Coast and Pacific Northwest for most of my life...and God am I sick of it.
Now, I've got no family in the Bible Belt, no friends, no work lined up or even a place to stay, but I'm strongly considering throwing all of my resources towards making it happen anyway.
Call me bigoted, close minded, weak willed, yellow bellied, cowardly, gutless, whatever you wanna sling at me (I'm not so stupid as to realize I'm posting this in a 90% liberal forum and about 50% of you ignored my above disclaimer to move along because you like confrontation), but I'm just so sick of living in Blue States.
I'm tired of hearing about all the decrying of white people and Christians. I'm done talking to people about how racist all white people are, or how much men are the cause of all evil and rape culture, or how oppressive and privileged straight people are to homosexuals and transgendered people.
I'm done with the Bible Bashing, finished with the Man Hating, tired of the Straight Shaming.
I just want to move to the only region left in America where people can just be people, I can read my Bible in peace, register for a gun real easy to help defend my family from all the crazies in life, where men are respected and not vilified. And yes, where I can be near people who think like myself and don't give a damn about issues involving race, sex and religion, because we all feel the same way and those issues don't effect us and we don't want to care about them anymore.
Sure, that may be just because they are all mostly white, straight, Christian people. But that just sounds like paradise to me right now. And I don't care if it makes me sound bigoted, I want to be around people who agree with my world view so I don't have to be ashamed to be a white, straight Christian man anymore.
Let the OP bashing begin.
Alternatively, if you happen to be someone like myself you can go ahead and reply with any nice places in the Bible Belt you would recommend. The more ingrained in religion, the better.
:Not going to voice an opinion on any topic OP mentioned.:
You are romanticizing the South a bit heavily...
Honestly, go for it. The Founders made our ability to move around the country a key aspect, so utilize it.
Just remember, the South is hot and muggy. There are few jobs in most places. Liberals still exist in the South, primarily in cities. Also, the transition will probably be difficult. I wouldn't rush into this. Line up a job/housing/support etc. I would call a church that you are interested in around the area you are looking at. They can help ease the moving process.
Denomination kinda determines where you live, but not really as bad as it did.
Care for blue laws. They are annoying as hell.
I would recommend TN, SC, or GA.
Good luck!
+ Put Greenville SC on your list of places to check out. Amazing place. Bob Jones University and Furman University are there.
It fits all of the criteria you have listed above so far.
I'm not too worried about rushing into it. I'm probably gonna give it a good 6 years of saving up money and resources so that my Son won't be too old to have any friends and will be just old enough to start going to public school.
Most of my "sick of it" sentiments were venting because these are the kind of things I want to say but can't due to the obviously taboo nature of my opinions. But I certainly will exercise patience before making a big leap in the middle of nowhere.
I was also hoping for The Wraith to post here because he seems very passionate about Texas and might be able to sell me on a few places.
I have to admit, that when I saw Galspanic as the first post I figured the thread was locked and was just a matter of time before I saw the banhammer.
Dallas, San Antonio, Tulsa, Jacksonville, Charlotte, Springfield, maybe Abilene due to the high amount of Christian Universities to study at.
Also was gonna be open to suggestions from any serious replies that weren't just gonna be shame posts and flames.
Yeah, I don't really care about what most people think or feel - it's sorta personal and not my business. But if you are looking for advice on moving there I think people here can help some... maybe?
When you say that you want to move to Abilene because there are a lot of Christian Universities, that seems weird to me. Since you can only really go to one at a time, why not move some place that has one that really works for you? I assume that even though you see yourself as conservative, you enjoy things that don't involve the political stuff you mentioned above, right? I'd move some place that had the other stuff covered too. Like Jacksonville is just a gross place and regardless of your leaning, it's gross. San Antonio actually has a thriving arts and culture scene that might not be your thing, but it's also got a million people and an interesting mix of folks. Tulsa is a good mix too, but that may not be your thing. I can't say I know Charlotte or which Springfield you are talking about.
Is something like Huntsville, AL or Kansas City, KS not appealing? Those seem like towns with opportunity and a bit of a conservative lean.
Charlotte is awesome, but it has stupidly bad traffic. STUPIDLY AWFUL. (iirc, the road systems were designed for like 100,000-300,000 people. now ~750k people.)
My problem is that I was cursed to enjoy many hobbies that most other conservative or religious leaning people don't enjoy. Such as nerdy card games, roleplaying games, computer related stuff, science fiction, things I assume would not be very popular in a particularly religious community.
But my faith and the ability to speak about it in public without risking getting stoned (ironically) is more important to me than any particular hobby I have now.
Hearing about all this 'stuff', how does that happen? If the TV is the main culprit, throw it out.
Certainly less drastic then moving.
Or you could just not care. I'm following the news a lot less than I used to (reading more books), and I find it a lot more rewarding.
Most of the news isn't really important.
I would encourage you to do a weekend (or more) visit to wherever is on your radar. Better yet, try to do it on a weekend when you can play some MTG at a local cardshop.
Based on what I've read and interpreted ITT, I would recommend looking at cities. You should be able to find some fellow nerds and not feel like everyone is cramming Rachel Maddow's opinions down your throat. I grew up in a small town in South Carolina but now call Atlanta home. I really, really like it here. (Ever hear of Dragoncon?) For me, it is southern enough to be comfortable, but metropolitan enough to not feel backwards.
I think one thing you will find about the South, is that most folks care less about race than Huffpost might have you believe. That, and in my experience, folks don't just assume that you share their political viewpoints.
If you have time and money (and if you're planning on moving anywhere you need more time and money than you think you will) you should rent a place for a month or few.
That way you've not lost as much if it turns out you hate the new place after a week. At the very least, take a holiday in a likely region and scout out the area yourself.

You have a son. Do you have a wife (I remember you saying you were married a while ago, but I might be wrong.)
How does she feel about this?
I find this very interesting. It's no secret that IRL I can't think of any place in the world I hate more than the south of the U.S.A.
I've never heard anything good about them before your thread. I guess I can see why you'd want to move there. It makes sense, considering what you want. But if you're married, would your wife be ok with it? It seems to be a big change, and I wonder if she'd follow you. If you aren't married, (assuming divorce or just never married) and you have split custody that could be a very big problem, but I have no idea what would actually happen.
Where do you see those unpleasant things the most?
TBH, I think TV and the interwebs are the two worst(worse? I never know which to use) places for extremely opinionated people. TV ditching might be a possibility as said above, and the net is full of people who agree with you. On anything. Just avoid the areas where people disagree and you can almost be in a 100% "We all have the same opinion" place. Which is more than I think you'd get anywhere, even in the bible belt.
Though I'd caution at assuming all Southern cities are conservative in the ways you want them to be; from everything I've heard from friends in the south, the cities are more liberal than I would have expected.
You mean where white straight conservatives don't have to see anyone who isn't a white straight conservative.
Seriously, why would you think it'd be a good idea to outright say that you were sick of everyone who opposes racism, sexism and homophobia? You could ask for advice on where to move and how by being a bit more subtle than that. Say that you're tired of the big city life and want to go somewhere more out of the way or in the general South. It has the same effect, it just doesn't so blatantly out you as a bad person.

Most of the urban centers of the South are much more liberal than the popular conception; they tend to be relatively affluent, secular, liberal, and mixed-race. That isn't to say that you couldn't insulate yourself from modernism in Atlanta or Charlotte, but you aren't going to be living in the Andy Griffith Show, either.

Wow, judgmental much? Everyone wants to find a place where they feel like they can just fit in. I can't speak to either extremely conservative or liberal environs firsthand, having spent all of my life in Wisconsin; but I can imagine that it could feel just as uncomfortable/awkward to be openly and traditionally Christian in Portland as it feels to be openly Wiccan in Austin.
I definitely trend liberal on most social issues; but as long as social or religious conservatism doesn't get tangled up in advocating "reparative therapy" for gays, teaching "intelligent design theory" in public schools, or blatantly misogynistic laws, I really don't have any problem with it. And it's quite bigoted to assume that anyone who self-identifies as conservative is personally on board with such wrong headed causes.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to generally be around people who look and think and believe as you do, so long as this desire does not translate into clannish or xenophobic behavior.

Love. Forgive. Trust. Be willing to be broken that you may be remade.
I live right outside of Abilene Tx and the Christian/Church/Republican thing is pretty heavy around here. I just looked up a list of churches in Abilene and counted 84! In the last election 76% of Taylor County voted Romney! A lot of places you go that have a TV going have it on Fox News. I have personally been embarrassed by some of the things i have seen on Fox news while in public places
The 3 Christian Universitys give Abilene a much different feel then similar sized towns with a non christian university like San Angelo. If you are use to living in a bigger city I would probably say Abilene is not for you because not a lot goes on around here and there is not much to do.
I dont really fit in around here but based on your post i think you would fit in just fine. I actually work with some one that sounds just like you that moved here from California and loves it

I'd just like to point out how ironic it is, that you want religious acceptance, yet are willing to ignore Jesus' mandate to make disciples, to be a "city on a hill" and to be a light in dark places. The modern American church is far too self-serving.
If you want loose guns laws, Texas (ironically) wouldn't be the first place I'd consider: Arizona and Utah are much more lax, though Protestants in Utah are essentially social pariahs, if you live in the more heavily Mormon areas.

I live in the Bible Belt and really don't appreciate your stereotyping of how things are down here. You're in for an incredibly rude awakening when you get here pal.
Good luck with your bigotry, hope you find a few folks to group up with here (hint: you'll still be looked down upon as a bigot and bible thumper by the majority of people, even in this region. Sure, you'll probably find a few more like minded bigots, but you're gonna be surprised at how many people turn their noses at you, the tea party is a laughing stock for the majority of people I meet where I live now, Georgia, as well as Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas, all of which I've lived in and visit several times a year still)
Edit: for reference I currently live in Savannah, Georgia, a place you might think fits your mold. However it's way more liberal than you'd imagine, with a thriving gay community, art school, and multi-racial/cultural acceptance. Paula deen who is from there is currently being ostracized for loving white people to much, just as an example.
I also live in Savannah, GA and uh well, yeah, there tend to be more liberal people here than conservatives. That being said, you can go about 40 or so miles outside the city limits and find very few liberals by comparison. Of course that is farm country and you have to deal with the smaller towns and even smaller available services, but that might be more to you liking in places such as Sylvania or Springfield, GA. Or even perhaps Newington, GA, a place with one police officer and one convenience store as its only grocery store.
I think you believe you need a change of scenery but in all actuality it sounds like you'd more so appreciate a time machine; one which could bring you back to the "good old times". Also I don't think "normal people" means what you think it means.
I agree with Tuss. You could have easily went about this without coming off as a bigot.

Hey Kraken. Southern Indiana here. 30 minutes from Louisville, KY. I live in a pretty rural area that has rolling hills, chicken farms, hog farms, hunting, fishing, tractor pulls, and other "rednecky" stuffs. You can get your "liberal" freak on by going to Louisville if you want and most people commute there for there jobs anyway.
I feel this is a great place to live and raise a family as I'm currently doing it myself. My son is 4 and currently enrolled in pre-K at the Catholic school here in our community. We just had our annual church picnic this weekend actually.
As far as liberals? Not many. Most people here are conservatives and while we have our fair share of Democrats they are all the old school democrats that are very conservative and just don't realize that that is actually what they are. Unions in the area are to blame for a lot of it, but whatareyougoingtodo?
As far as culture, the small town I live in is pretty basic, but like I said, your 30 minutes from Louisville and they have anything and everything you can imagine.
I can tell you of a few places that largely have views very similar to yours; Jordan, Egypt, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Syria.
Wow, didn't know there are large white, Christian populations in those places.
Well, maybe Afghanistan for a short time and possibly Syria in a little while. My guess is that Russia would be a better suggestion for a non-US country.
