I have always been on the bigger side muscle wise. I'm 5'6" and the lowest weight I have had was 145lbs when I got out of basic training. Right now I'm 216lbs and it's only around 16% fat. I don't have abs because I'm short and 16% looks like a lot more on short people. Even when I was 145lbs I was around 10% BF and I still didn't have abs
Yeah, it's weird like that. But the only thing that can safely build muscle is working at it.
I love lifting weights myself. I have always loved lifting.
I never really took it seriously until more recently. Now I lift every day and have enjoyed it immensely,
I eat like a hog. I have 5 eggs every morning and grilled chicken for lunch with usually a steak or something of that nature for dinner. I also drink about a gallon of water, and a gallon of whole milk each day. Obviously stuff like spinach and broccoli are mixed in there, lightly steam or raw only though. You want your proteins to be dense, along with your nutrient sources. In all I am ingesting about 3k calories and I am always hungry. It's something you have to develop your body to do. You have to stimulate a large enough anabolic reaction to encourage a hormonal change that will put your system back on track.
What does this even mean?
I think you mean your food should be calorically dense. That is, high in calories.
I've long wondered about stimulates and if it would help me focus and be less hyper. Due to what ever reason I have a bias against taking drugs and am leery about changing my brain chemistry espcially sense I have a history of addiction (not drugs). In fact, yesterday was the first time I took a "energy drink" (5hr energy shot) and must say the effect was interesting as I was more alert oppisite of the caffine I get from coffee or soda. I imagine sugar plays a role as well. Problem is, even on a regulated diet, the focus and other issues persist.
I don't like 5hr energy myself, but it's more because it says it's not an energy drink. It's either postmodernism (and if it is, I'd stay away from smoking too; man, these images are treacherous) or a blatant lie.
It also uses a legal loophole: Dietary supplements aren't regulated, really. This is good for them, because "prevents scurvy" isn't as sexy (or relevant to anyone who can afford a supplement) as "cures the common cold supports a healthy immune system". (When selling a supplement, you're not allowed to make health claims on the packaging, but you're allowed to make structure-function claims. The difference is that health claims say it cures, diagnoses, prevents, or mitigates a disease, while structure-function claims go just one millimeter behind that line. There's a disclaimer on the packaging, though.) And the definition of "supplement" includes herbal pills and things your body makes itself (like coenzyme Q10), which are decidedly not essential to a diet, and (in the case of herbal remedies) have the usual concerns of not knowing how much of a medicine is in there (since plants are organic systems, and see my earlier comments on placebos, drugs, and poisons).
I wish there was more conclussive indicators for stuff like ADD.
That's the difficulty with psychiatry. Unlike the rest of medicine, where pathophysiological causes are diagnostic criteria, psychiatrists are currently still stuck with clinical definitions. This can lead to issues itself; several genes, for instance, could be associated with something like autism (to use a mental condition heavily linked to family history), but if we can't separate Gene A autism from Gene B autism because they have the same symptoms, it muddies finding a genetic cause for autism, simply because there are two (or more) conditions lumped in the "autism" list.

Yeah, it's weird like that. But the only thing that can safely build muscle is working at it.
Abs are from low BMI. I would have to get under probably 7% to have abs. That is never going to happen because there is no reason for it IMO.
What does this even mean?
I think you mean your food should be calorically dense. That is, high in calories.
Sort of, you need lean meats with low Sat Fats. You fats should be almost all in liquid form as MUF's.
Hence "no pain, no gain".
I have been at it so long that I do not feel the pain anymore. I do not get DOMS anymore. I just get glycogen depletion, which means that tired numb feeling.

In short, I don't like energy drinks.
It's best to get your needs filled by good foods, and I generally agree with energy drinks, except I do think a single green Monster about 20 minutes before a good lift session actually helps with your energy level afterwards. It has Taurine in to help stop you from feeling too tired. I drink one of them a day for the simple sugar to get energy, add in the rest of the aminos it has and I generally feel really good while lifting no matter how heavy I go.

Not quite. All fat has 9 calories per gram. You avoid saturated fat because it raises your LDL cholesterol (and admittedly also your HDL cholesterol). Cis-unsaturated fats lower your LDL cholesterol, and cis-monounsaturated fats raise your HDL cholesterol too. Trans-unsaturated fats, however, not only raise your LDL cholesterol, but lower your HDL cholesterol.
There's still a good reason to do it (avoiding a heart attack), but...you get the idea.

It's just that it's not tested enough for my preference. Hence "statements not evaluated by the FDA". Yeah, DSHEA's a mother of a law, but get this, it was a bunch of health nuts who wrote to Congress about it. (Because the FDA wanted to regulate supplements, so the supplement companies presented a fairly dystopian image of the ATF shooting a pharmacist for selling a bottle of vitamin C.)

Or % body fat. Remember, someone with a lot of muscle will have a high BMI.
As muscle mass goes up BMI drops. BMI is a measure of fat as a percentage of weight.

Diet has next to zero impact on cholesterol. MUF's are primary to feed the joints and to fuel hormone production. Primary testosterone.

Three things.
1) More than one study has shown that supplementation is inefficient due to the nature of just throwing a massive amount of one particular nutrient that is in greater amounts than our body can efficiently process ends up just giving you expensive urine.
2) Whole foods, which means non-processed foods, have a natural balance of required nutrients and proteins.
3) The diet I am talking about is used by elite athletes around the world. It is the result of nearly 60 years of nutrition. It's the diet that Olympic athletes use with great success.

The tape test is added to the BMI to determine the fat percentage. This is how the military calibrates a healthy weight based upon fat percentage.
My BMI is at 35%. If you do the full BMI calculation I'm at a healthy weight for my fat percentage. The newer usage of BMI adds the tape to the BMI calculation.

Me neither. Or most artifical means of energy/mind altering.

I think one's metabolism is set based on any number of factors (genetics being primary) with limited ability to change it.
I'm 34 and been within 10 pounds of 165 at 6' since I was 14-15 years old. Back then I lifted every day for football and was strong as an ox, ate like one too. I could not pack the weight on, still cant. Army, bad eating habits...sleep schedule changes... No change. My cholesterol been great and I'm mostly health besides the random sinus infection, an appendix out a year ago and chronic joint pain from abusing my body physically. I smoke too. I think when I hit 40 it may catch up with me. I hardly drink...but everyonce in while I go in spurts when I'll have a beer or two for a few days in a row.
Tell that to the AHA. Genetics is important too (familial hypercholesterolemia is a thing), and other things can raise cholesterol (steroid use and vitamin D supplements means your body won't be converting as much cholesterol to those substances), but diet is a factor.

That sounds about right. That's why with any drug, you need to watch for side effects.
Other things can alter your metabolism, though. Alcoholism, for instance. Also, obesity can lead to diabetes.
Long story short, "it's more complicated than that".

Well, I do not take much more than Motrin/IB (do not ask me to spell its other name). I remember two drugs when appendix died (litterly)....the morphine they gave me upon was like, wow....and the stuff, do not know what it's called but it helps with contrasting MRI's.....soon as they shoot you with it, it a hot sensation taht starts at your head and flows down to your mid section where it feels like you just peed yourself, this right after they make you drink a gallon of disgusting fake Kool Aide... Other than a a few other opioids and a few antibiotics I have zero expereince with drugs.
never side effects. Used another 5hr today due to **** sleep last night and this stuff it strange how unnoticable and alert it is. I see why it sells. Have to get better sleep habits cause I'm not spending money on this every few days but it does what it says it does.

You simply were not eating enough to grow additional mass. Some people have to go 1000 calories over maintenance to trigger the anabolic growth. Once they get it started though they can usually back down the calories. Another thing is if you are insulin sensitive you have spend like a week on a low or no carb diet to get your body to readjust it-self into growing instead of fueling/storing.
It sounds like you are just one of those people that has insulin sensitivity and require a higher caloric intake to get the growth started.
80% of building mass is diet alone. I'm at 218lbs now, I have my diet dialed in almost perfectly. I'm one of those insulin sensitive people, so I have to cycle carbs, but my caloric requirements for growth are really low. I can eat what should be my maintenance and still grow.
That is the OLD method of calculating it. BMI is an official weights and measure standard and it's changed several times already.
Athletes and bodybuilders are why you have to be careful applying BMI.
I am an athlete... I have been for nearly 20 years now.

The AHA is bureaucracy, nothing more, the real studies have been done by the NCBI. Diet has very little effect on cholesterol levels. It's primarily the functioning of the endocrine system that regulates it.
That's what I was saying. Energy drinks are marketed as supplements rather than foods or drugs.
Probably because they are supplements.
Everyone that makes use of them uses them for supplementation. All of the powerlifters and various other athletes and high stress occupations use them during training.

I'm a genetic freak that way.
I do not think it's humanly possible to eat more food than I ate back then. I was well over 4-5000 calories//day before I realized, i'm just not going to gain weight. I was extremely active and hyper....still hyper, just not active.
My final lift in high school before our last playoff loss was 315 @167lbs body weight. (thinly veiled brag)
To be more on topic...I was diagnosed with ADD when I was a kid after a few bad quarters in grade school, and prescribed Adderall, and I must say...OP's experience definitely does NOT match up to mine.
I didn't experience any of the awesome things OP mentioned, but after 2-3 years I developed psychotic symptoms - as can happen with long-term amphetamine use - and discontinued them in late middle school.
Was diagnosed with bipolar disorder today after 2.5 years of therapy and a visit to a psychiatrist. Evidently bipolar, where manic episodes are predominant, and amphetamines/similar stimulants make for a terrible combination.
I'm happy for OP, though. It's good to see medication working as expected. I'm honestly a little bit jealous because OP's experiences sound like my old hypomanic episodes that I got when I was younger. Now the mania just keeps me from doing anything productive :/

I know quite a bit about how your experience must have gone. There is bipolar disorder in my family. My mother is a rapid cycler. She can go from depressed to manic and back within the span of a day. Her manic episodes aren't too bad though - usually resulting in nothing more extreme than a clean fridge. My uncle has it too but his is more standard and his manic phases are kind of scary. I suspect that a few others have it to some degree but haven't been diagnosed. I myself seem to be free of it fortunately.
All medicine isn't an exact science. The medical professionals treats the most likely cause based upon your symptoms and tests. Alot of medicine is based upon what the patient tells the clinician he/she is experiencing. That is why it is great if patient's keep a logbook of what's going on, when it happened, and what happened around the event is an amazing help to any clinician.
*soapbox*
Don't lie to your doctor. It doesn't help you. If you haven't been taking your medicine or changing your diet etc. Don't lie. You are not going to hurt anyone's feelings by being honest with us. If the medicine/recommendation/exercises are not fitting your lifestyle, we need to know. Maybe we can find alternatives for you, but if you lie to us, we often can't help you at all and you're going to get worse.
*off soapbox*
I suggest asking for the "differential" which is asking your doctor to say, what is the probable causes of your condition. It's generally a ranked list of causes; for example, you have a cough, mild fever and a runny nose. The Cold may be the top of the differential, and the flu a second with pneumonia lower on the list.
Patients don't like to hear that the doctor isn't 100% sure what is going on, but if you're intelligent enough to understand that medicine isn't an exact science, ask your doctor what he is thinking, which is to your benefit in the long run.
I've got an update.
I've developed a tolerance already. Today i didn't feel any effect from the medicine at all. My wife could tell that it wasn't working anymore because i was not communicating with her very well.
Now i feel like i always used to feel. It's not such a bad way to be but i know there's a better way to be. I can recognize shortcomings that i used to be blind to. I can remember what it felt like to be on meds and i feel as if i can 'turn it on' again to some extent, but only if i really concentrate.

That's why I never seriously considered taking adderall for school work.
If it really did help me considerably, then why on Earth would I ever want to stop taking it?
Stuff just turns me into a zombie for the most part. Been taking stimulant medication for a long time. I guess it's very helpful for certain things but the confidence and stuff doesn't really happen for me unless it's really low doses or fast acting.
My two cents. Rarely a good time. I have some tricks up my sleeve to get around that but I doubt this thread wants to head that direction. Helpful but never an addiction problemo.
I have homework due in 2 hours. I should be doing it. I'm going to try to force it again. I think I already described what that feels like.
There are drawbacks to the Adderall but there are drawbacks to being off it too. I'm dreading starting my homework. I'm certain that I'm going to go there, start reading and my mind will just go somewhere else.
Dude I could procrastinate like nobody's business while taking focus medication. Time just pours down the drain while you are reading forums etc. Motivation gets you working and if you are like me, medication makes staying there a lot easier and sometimes makes your work more effective.
One thing I remember was I was more likely to get into ruts or patterns when studying under the influence. Even if it was obviously not the most effective path, it's easy to get kinda cyclical or fall into the motions when you're on stimulant medication.
When the Adderall was working I wasn't procrastinating.
The first day I was so high I couldn't stop myself. That wasn't good. I got a lot of stuff done and I felt like I had superhuman powers of observation but it was too altered.
Then on about the third day I wasn't feeling particularly high or hyperactive. I was making responsible decisions and performing tasks that needed done as soon as I had the time. There was no procrastination. Might have still been a little high but I couldn't tell aside from being unusually confident.
By the fifth day I was starting to feel almost as if I wasn't taking medication at all but I was still noticably more succinct in conversation. Procrastination was possible but manageable.
Today is the eighth day and I feel like there's nothing in me even though I took the same dose again this morning. I was in full procrastination mode earlier and my wife was getting frustrated at me for talking in circles again.
I understand that the body builds a tolerance. Still - there ought to be a dose that will give me an effect that's somewhat like the way it felt between day 3 and day 5. I'll be talking to my physician about that as soon as she comes back from the long weekend.
I do not think it's humanly possible to eat more food than I ate back then. I was well over 4-5000 calories//day before I realized, i'm just not going to gain weight. I was extremely active and hyper....still hyper, just not active.

Unless you are shorter than me you are not putting up 315 in any shape other than bad deadlift form or a weak partial squat at that weight.
Additionally, you may think you were eating that much, but I can assure you were not eating properly if you were close to it, and likely were not eating that much. 3.3K calories a day is 5 meals and a gallon of milk for me.

I am in no way promoting drug use with this post and all information below should be taken as educational, not as a pro tip;
I use this stuff a lot for fun. I prefer Vyvanse, though. I'm very open about my drug use and just wanted to give you some incite and information on the serious negative side effects of this drug. (To deter you guys away from taking more than the prescribed dose. Ever. It's very tempting.)
I've been taking anywhere from 30 to 200mg in a single session. (Stretched weeks apart, I will explain why)Sometimes 30 is enough to get me up, and depending on how much of it I have and the last time I took it. Adderall (The orange chewable pills) are very, very strong. 30 mg of that stuff feels like 60 of XR and 40 of Vyvanse. This is only if you use the break-in-half technique to kill the time release (some chew them). These three medications are prescribed for basically the same things and I'm only telling you this because there may come a time where you switch medications.
Anyway, the highs are great, last for hours and hours and I have learned to handle the crashes really well. This is because I've been doing them for nearly five years and do them intelligently. (When I said 200+ mg in a single binge I meant over an 18 hr period. never take that much at once and many shouldn't take that much period)
I've seen people put holes in walls, attack friends, cry for hours, stare vacant at walls for hours, drink themselves nearly to death and stay up for 48 hrs well after they've taken the last pill due to the way you come down off this stuff. It's not a joke; abusing this stuff, especially if you're a newbie, can rewire your brain and seriously mess with everything going on up there.
When I first started doing Addy with my stepdad he was a great guy. Always happy, upbeat, giving, caring and generally an amazing human being. He had a tendency of doing 30, 30mg pills in a matter of three-four days without any sleeping one to three times a month. Over the course of the last couple years he snaps at the drop of a dime, becomes violent, has little interest in anything and he and I no longer speak because he can not control his rage. (even after 20+ days without Adderall) When Adderall is abused and taken in large doses over long periods of time it has serious mental side effects.
Adderall turned him into, and I'm saying this seriously not metaphorically, into someone with Intermittent explosive disorder. We no longer speak and I've lost my best friend and yes, I blame Adderall.
The side effects I've had from this have been completely unnoticeable aside from some enamel deterioration on my teeth from the teeth grinding you get from binging. If anything because I researched extensively how not to turn into my stepdad has kept the serious side effects free.
I have a friend who uses 70 mg Vyvanse to lose weight. She went from taking them like a pill, to opening the capsule onto her tongue, to snorting them and now she's about 95 lbs, nearly grinded all her teeth off, has gotten so avoident and anti social she doesn't talk to anyone else and basically turned herself into a meth addict.
Adderall is so addictive because of what it does to your mind. "If I take this I won't eat" "I can cram for a test better" "I want to be able to work out more" "It makes me more social"
This drug is serious. Do not take it lightly. I honestly can't believe they give it to children in such high doses. Expect it to be banned sometime eventually.

Yeah, it's weird like that. But the only thing that can safely build muscle is working at it.

I think you mean your food should be calorically dense. That is, high in calories.
Hence "no pain, no gain".
This is good for them, because "prevents scurvy" isn't as sexy (or relevant to anyone who can afford a supplement) as "
cures the common coldsupports a healthy immune system". In short, I don't like energy drinks.

Abs are from low BMI. I would have to get under probably 7% to have abs. That is never going to happen because there is no reason for it IMO.
Sort of, you need lean meats with low Sat Fats. You fats should be almost all in liquid form as MUF's.
I have been at it so long that I do not feel the pain anymore. I do not get DOMS anymore. I just get glycogen depletion, which means that tired numb feeling.

Or % body fat. Remember, someone with a lot of muscle will have a high BMI.
On phasing:

False. BMI is weight (kg) / height (m) ^ 2
Athletes and bodybuilders are why you have to be careful applying BMI.
Tell that to the AHA. Genetics is important too (familial hypercholesterolemia is a thing), and other things can raise cholesterol (steroid use and vitamin D supplements means your body won't be converting as much cholesterol to those substances), but diet is a factor.
That's what I was saying. Energy drinks are marketed as supplements rather than foods or drugs.
Another smilie we need: Jack Spicer. Until then...

In general, the problem is that they're woo. And when I hear "natural" in an ad, "Yakkity Sax" starts playing in my head.
That sounds about right. That's why with any drug, you need to watch for side effects.
Other things can alter your metabolism, though. Alcoholism, for instance. Also, obesity can lead to diabetes.
Long story short, "it's more complicated than that".
On phasing:
I thought the results from that stuff was just your body responding to not responding to your metabolism by eating and drinking right. exercise too.

I'm a genetic freak that way.
That is the OLD method of calculating it. BMI is an official weights and measure standard and it's changed several times already.
I am an athlete... I have been for nearly 20 years now.
The AHA is bureaucracy, nothing more, the real studies have been done by the NCBI. Diet has very little effect on cholesterol levels. It's primarily the functioning of the endocrine system that regulates it.
Probably because they are supplements.
Everyone that makes use of them uses them for supplementation. All of the powerlifters and various other athletes and high stress occupations use them during training.

Basically you get addicted.
My two cents. Rarely a good time. I have some tricks up my sleeve to get around that but I doubt this thread wants to head that direction. Helpful but never an addiction problemo.
Cube talk, design community and much much more!
There are drawbacks to the Adderall but there are drawbacks to being off it too. I'm dreading starting my homework. I'm certain that I'm going to go there, start reading and my mind will just go somewhere else.
I'm going. Now. Probably.
One thing I remember was I was more likely to get into ruts or patterns when studying under the influence. Even if it was obviously not the most effective path, it's easy to get kinda cyclical or fall into the motions when you're on stimulant medication.
Anyone tried staterra?
Cube talk, design community and much much more!

I'm 5ft 7 and my max deadlift thus far is 345 at 162lb.
