33 years old. Taking adderall (prescribed, for add) for the first time.
I feel like i just gained an extra sense. I'm looking people in the eye more. I feel confident. I'm reading body language and expressions that i would've missed before. I'm smelling things more. I'm having an easier time forming sentences and expressing thoughts.
I feel as if i just realized that most of the world was playing the game on easy mode while i've been playing on veteran difficulty. There are so many things that used to take effort that today i find myself doing naturally.
I'm sure i'm not the only one taking this drug. Please share your experiences. I would love to be able to compare.
Because I don't believe in amphetamine use, even if a doctor suggested I take, it I never would. I do have some college friends who use it (with positive results) to stay up and do homework and cram for tests.

I used to have an attitude about taking it but i got fired from a six figure job because i was struggling to keep up with the training.
I've traced the high throughout the day and it's definitely waning now but i am convinced that it will help me. I will take my dose again tomorrow.
Btw don't take someone else's meds. I have 20 mg. I heard about another kid who was taking 100. I cant even imagine what that would feel like.

Depends on tolerances, really. Some people have been taking amphetamines since they were children so they need an elevated dose. Also it depends if it's regular or XR (extended release).

Apparently a large number (40-50% last I heard) of college students take adderall or some other ADHD treatment drugs to get ahead in school. I was not one of them, and I always wondered whether I should have been less of a prude and more practical.

I resisted taking it for two and a half decades because I did not want to feel like I needed a drug to be normal. That said - I feel that it significantly increased my performance today.
I was very high at first. A few people noted that I was acting hyper and I have to admit that I was staring people down a little bit when I first got to work. That was about 3 hours after the initial dose. It's hard for me to describe the sensation. It's kind of like - how would one explain color to the color-blind? That's not a direct analogy but I think it is suggestive of the thought process that I'm putting myself through in trying to describe the effects.
I seemed to be smelling things better than usual today. I'm not claiming enhanced olfactory powers. I think that I had been living my whole life in a state of sensory static that prevented me from paying attention to my nose.
I turned on the radio and I found it easier to pick out the bass guitar in the songs that were playing. That was exciting. A long time ago my best friend tried to teach me to play bass and at first I really struggled with it because I could not hear the bass very well. At the time I had to concentrate very hard to pick the bass out and isolate it from the rest of the song. It made the process very difficult for me and I quit trying. Today it was easy. I can hear the bass!
I also found that it was easier to notice body language, expressions and innuendo. There is a guy at work who lies all the time and he infuriates me because I could never read him. I would always have to go see for myself or ask someone else to tell me the truth. Today I heard him lie and I knew immediately that it was a lie. I smiled and I told him how much easier it is to read people. He seemed uncomfortable and walked away.
I tried drawing a sketch. I've been doing this as a hobby since I was very young but never before has it felt so easy. I was evaluating form and composition together and it was... Easy. Later in the day I tried again when the meds were getting weaker and it was more difficult.
Then I came home and did my homework. I have this procrastination ritual that I do every night. I spend 1-3 hours surfing the web until my mind is tired. If I try to do my homework before my mind is tired I can't read the lesson. I'll get to the bottom of the page and realize that I have no idea what I just read. Nothing ever worked for me aside from my little ritual.
Today I surfed for 30 minutes and went straight to work on my homework. I completed a difficult assignment (special relativity and time dilation) and I didn't even need to take a break.
It's amazing on just about every level. Even now when I can barely feel the drug's effects I know it's still working because this message was relatively easy to type.
I didn't even realize how affected I was until I lived through today as a normal person.
Adderall is a very strong drug, but it should be used when a person has exhausted all their options.
Inattention for some is a true problem and despite all of their efforts to develop coping mechanisms (removal of distractions, breaking routines, etc) to get the focus to maintain their daily lives, they can't seem to focus. Many people with a true problem don't get evaluated and often begin to self-medicate with other drugs like alcohol, marijuana and other drugs. People with ADHD will outgrow the hyperactivity, but the inattention stay around.
Adderall shouldn't be used when a person purposefully neglects their studies, procrastinates and attempts an overnight cram cession. Due to the mechanism of the drug, it still works in those people who are not "sick" unlike some other drugs. It can be for "academic doping" which can turn around and bite a student later if their job requires focus to get the job done.
Adderall isn't without its side effects, which I hope you are maintaining a good appetite and sleeping well at night. I hope you are following a physician to monitor your progress as well as to monitor other organs the medication effects like your heart.
It is a pretty potent stimulant and it is enjoyable for someone who can enjoy the effect of stimulants, but the consequences come in the form of psychological dependence.
When I tried it once in my youth, I understood how useful it is as an actual prescribed drug. I had quite a day and had long conversations with free-flowing thoughts. I actually probably could have reasonably 'needed' adderall growing up, but I don't think anyone really 'needs it', but it is a sweet drug with some positive side-effects.
Even if I could get a prescription because i need it or just to abuse it like many people do, I wouldn't, because I want to consume as few mind-altering pills in my lifetime as possible.

You're not living as a "normal person". When I was first put on adderall and various similar stimulants including ritalin during school the conclusion was well, Matt isn't doing well on his schoolwork and is acting out (hard to expect boys who evolved to be hunters to thrive in a setting where they are sitting down 99% of the day) so he needs X or Y to do well.
The first thing I was led to believe is that OH IM A NORMAL PERSON NOW, but it doesn't jive with no one I knew acting like that but I believed such. You become hyper focused, get idlely amused by doing nothing, become a perfectionist, and also quick to anger. It also annihilated my sex drive and made it nigh impossible to even get up. I spent hours perfecting stories, magic decks, etc. and while I felt happier on it it was a false happiness and it only gets worse as you get dependent and basically feel like **** whenever you are NOT on it. I begged my mom to let me take an extra one before a Magic tournament once and felt the need to lash out almost when I didn't get it.
The conclusion of the adderall/ritalin experiment involved me trashing my entire room, punching 20+ holes in the wall, destroying my BMX trophies, etc. I am one of the least prone to anger people I know.

It's all a matter of metabolic variations and priorities. I mean, thalidomide's used in leprosy, and it's anti-angiogenic (meaning it inhibits blood vessel growth, which is an important step in the growth of a tumor), but I wouldn't use it for morning sickness.
The dirty secret of medicine: The difference between "placebo", "drug", and "poison" is only a matter of the dosage.

There was an April Fools article from the National Academy of Sciences a few years back, playing on the use of steroids in sports with mandatory drug testing for amphetamines. You'd be surprised how many scientists thought the article was real.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

I am sad to hear that it wasn't able to help you. I have had a great three days. I don't have any of the negative effects that you're describing except i do feel a little bit annoyed when i can't work on whatever action i'm trying to complete. It's not rage but it is a little unusual for me.
Sex drive is normal. Actually a little better i'd say. Appetite is smaller but i don't mind that.
The only significant negative effect so far is the fact that i am no longer super good at falling asleep. It's not preventing me from sleeping but it's noticeable.
I have been productive. I have been less awkward in conversations.
Adderall IS making me feel normal. As my best friend helped me describe it, i feel like "a human among humans" now.
I understand that there is some skepticism. I think that most of it is probably warranted. It clearly doesn't help everyone who takes it and many of those who do take it probably shouldn't be taking it.
It is definitely helping me. I don't feel like a different person at all. I feel like the person i always wanted to be.
I think that it works as well as it does for me because i spent 23 years preparing for it. I tried everything else first. I didn't ask for extra help until i was convinced that i couldn't do any more on my own.

Let's face it - pretty much all brilliance comes from drug use. There is is simply no doubt that drugs help people to "unlock" or "let out" certain thought processes and ideas that they otherwise would not. Whether it's music, art, books, gaming and surely things like science. Everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Carl Sagan has expressed this same sentiment.
You might want to get a full blood panel done and see where your Testosterone levels are at. You are likely shutting down if you are having energy issues at that age.
Just think you should look further into it before you mess with your brain chemistry with drugs extensively.

I've long wondered about stimulates and if it would help me focus and be less hyper. Due to what ever reason I have a bias against taking drugs and am leery about changing my brain chemistry espcially sense I have a history of addiction (not drugs). In fact, yesterday was the first time I took a "energy drink" (5hr energy shot) and must say the effect was interesting as I was more alert oppisite of the caffine I get from coffee or soda. I imagine sugar plays a role as well. Problem is, even on a regulated diet, the focus and other issues persist.
I wish there was more conclussive indicators for stuff like ADD.

I was a skeptic for a long time. All those years i kept thinking that i was probably just lazy or maybe just a procrastinator so i worked hard to improve my work habits, to change my attitude and to become a productive and successful person. It partially worked. I improved my study habits and learned to do things even when it was the last thing in the world that i wanted to do but everything was extremely hard. I got better but i started to run into walls. Particularly regarding procrastination.
I would come home and force myself to start homework in my online classes. I would read a page of text and realize that i hadn't actually absorbed any information. I would try again and again nothing. My mind kept going off on tangents. I doubt that a healthy person could understand how bad it is when even the word "the" could have me distracted for a few minutes, thinking about 'ye olde english spellings' of the word for example. Everyone has experienced a tangent like that right? But have you ever found yourself trapped in loops of them?
I found a trick that worked - if i surfed the internet and indulged my brain on tangents for a while eventually i'd tire myself out and it would get easier to focus. Of course that's procrastination to a tee. Other people who knew my work habits wondered why i procrastinated. Why not just get the work done? Well it wasn't for lack of trying.
When i finally decided to ask my doctor she diagnosed me again. She gave me a question sheet which i answered truthfully and she told me that i have adult add but no hyperactivity. I think i do have the hyperactivity but it seems to manifest in me as rampant daydreaming, pacing and finger biting rather than the sorts of behaviors that are usually associated with adhd.
I haven't needed my ritual lately. I get home, check a few sites if i'm waiting on a reply (like this thread for example) but then when i decide that it's time to do my homework i just do my homework. No more tangent traps. No more procrastination. I read. I learn. I write. I am done.
Yeah I used to be just like you. When I started power-lifting and naturally changing my body chemistry it improved massively.
For the record last Nov I tested low for Testosterone. I stopped drinking and started lifting more regularly and I changed it literally over night. Energy level through the roof and able to focus on whatever I set my mind to. My Test levels have gone way up as well.

I used to have very little interest in exercise but i now i feel like i need to be more healthy. My appetite is reduced and when i do eat i'm finding myself grossed out by some foods that i used to wolf down. I want to eat more veggies and fruits. I've been fiending for orange juice too. Also drinking more water and less iced tea.
I am considering my options regarding exercise. I will do something but i don't know what yet. I'm in the sort of situation where a ten minute workout is probably about all i can handle. I kind of want to set up my dance dance revolution again.

I have always been on the bigger side muscle wise. I'm 5'6" and the lowest weight I have had was 145lbs when I got out of basic training. Right now I'm 216lbs and it's only around 16% fat. I don't have abs because I'm short and 16% looks like a lot more on short people. Even when I was 145lbs I was around 10% BF and I still didn't have abs
I love lifting weights myself. I have always loved lifting.
I never really took it seriously until more recently. Now I lift every day and have enjoyed it immensely,
I eat like a hog. I have 5 eggs every morning and grilled chicken for lunch with usually a steak or something of that nature for dinner. I also drink about a gallon of water, and a gallon of whole milk each day. Obviously stuff like spinach and broccoli are mixed in there, lightly steam or raw only though. You want your proteins to be dense, along with your nutrient sources. In all I am ingesting about 3k calories and I am always hungry. It's something you have to develop your body to do. You have to stimulate a large enough anabolic reaction to encourage a hormonal change that will put your system back on track.
If I were to work with you on it, I would start you off with Romanian and Dumb-bell Deadlifts daily. Lift light to get started and get your body to start building those lower chain CNS systems so you can actually use all of the muscles that you have available to you. Deadlifts also trigger your endocrine system into releasing testosterone. The heavier the lift the greater the response will be, but you have to build into that heavier deadlift so you do not injure yourself.

I went to Navy boot camp. I was 6-0 and 142 the day I got there and about 155 when I got out. I'm one of the only people who put on weight. I was skinny as a rail before I joined and during bootcamp I really worked hard and I ate every scrap of food I could get my hands on.
When I got out I went to school and didn't do very much PT anymore but my appetite was still huge. I think I was 180 by the end of the first year and then 210-ish by the end of the second year. Four years later I got my discharge at about 242 lbs. That was in 2004. I'm still about 245 or so today.
I'm admittedly not that well informed about the topic but I imagine that I should probably start with something more like "walk 10 minutes every day" until my cardiovascular system improves a little. My blood pressure and cholesterol aren't bad yet but I really haven't done much to keep myself active.

I went into OSUT at 174lbs at about 15% BF. I was a crappy runner when I got there. Just didn't have the leg endurance to keep up with the skinnier dudes. I could out hump all of them on the ruck marches, but running was a nightmare for me.
Even to this day my running is not the best but I still do it, because I don't like being the slow poke all the time.
Nidstyles-
PL or BB or strongman? 216lb at 5ft 6 is ... really ****ing big.
PL, I have always been a bigger dude for my height. Always had big thighs and massive calves. I started lifting when I was 15. I wrestled, and then was a contractor for a while, always doing manual labor type of jobs. Ended up in the Army as an Infantryman, and was carrying my own body weight plus for years. It's just old man muscle with dat dere muscle memory telling it where to grow back every time.
I'm the classic endomorph body type, so you get the idea what it's like for me. Getting cut is impossible. Any time I get close to 10% I start feeling extremely weak. 15% seems to be the perfect BMI for me. I would like to get over 225lbs, but not sure. I have just recently started using a roller as mobility can be an issue and getting over heated doesn't take much for me. 225lbs with about 190lbs of lean mass sounds pretty good to me. The wife likes it too.

On phasing:
Just think you should look further into it before you mess with your brain chemistry with drugs extensively.

I read. I learn. I write. I am done.
My life feels normal this way.

PL or BB or strongman? 216lb at 5ft 6 is ... really ****ing big.
