I found an article stating that the Canadian province of Quebec is gonna be lowering the drinking age from 18 to 14.
what do people think of that?
personally, I think it's too young of an age to be buying booze.
I dunno what it's exactly like in Quebec but if its anything like Ontario, underage people will be drinking a lot already and the legal age to be drinking being lowered to 14 can't do much good.
I always thought that the legal age being from between 17-19 is the ideal age but that's just me
tell me your thoughts
I've always been one to think that drinking is more cultural problem then an age problem. As such I think a drinking age around 14-16 is acceptable if the drinking culture around it is good.
Though in the same regards I don't believe a drinking age should ever be above 18. If you can be drafted, you should be able to drink.
Wow, 14! I was thinking 16 when I first read the thread title, but 14 is a too low. Responsibility is the reason for the age limit, and most 14 year olds I've met, including my formal self, are not mature enough to be buying alcohol in reasonable amounts. 18 seems fine to me though, 21 is way to high, but 14 is way to low.

Quebec is a very liberal (well more NDP now....) Provence. Frankly I think this is a good change as long as parents are watching there children drink introducing them too it at a younger age will make more resonable drinking adults. no need to drink to get drunk, you will drink to enjoy flavor of your drink.
I guess I'll be a little more direct. This is a joke. A comedy program on the CBC. Notice the tagline?
"We don't just talk about the issues. We fabricate them."
As I'm completely sure the more conservatively minded Canadians would have been LEAPING on this as soon as it had it's first reading and I've heard nothing of the sort about it, I think that's pretty good confirmation this is a joke as well.

I think you both bring up a good point, if the culture can teach responsibility with alcohol, then it'll be fine but the thing is, a lot of people my age aren't even that responsible with it and a lot of people I know weren't very responsible at 14.

the thing with watching children is that a lot of kids get alcohol when their parents aren't around, so the parents can't watch their kids when they're not around.
although, I guess it's too early to tell how big of a problem it'll be. who knows, it might not even get out of control

Interesting. I think it's a bad idea given that driver licences are issued at the age of 16. Booze + Inexperienced Drivers = Really Bad.
Quebec always marches to the beat of a different drummer.

Is there a particular reason why they're doing so?
I can't see the benefits, really, and I'm hoping someone could explain.
They aren't as it has been pointed out, " this is that" is a comedy show which fabricates news. Bravo to them because if you search Quebec Drinking Age 14 all the comes up is that news item and 3 threads on various programs.
I think that's the main thing with underage drinking, people think its cool to get completely destroyed all the time and that a lot of kids are too young to buy their own booze.
I think another thing that doesn't really relate to 14 year olds is that college/university culture is that the "cool" thing to do is get drunk every week.
I've never done anything I've regretted besides a hangover but I know a good amount of people who have done stupid stuff, like get arrested and whatnot
so maybe the culture now leads people to get drunk and abuse it

Is this serious? I dont mean to be condescending but reading that I feel like you don't actually drink. Most beers range in taste from drinkable to ok(obviously there are exceptions) and most hard liquors taste awful straight. More importantly I know thats only because I've developed a taste for them, I remember when I first started drinking and I thought literally every beer and hard liquor tasted like garbage. Obviously some mixed drinks actually do taste good, but certainly not all, and I can think of few I would drink for flavor alone if they didn't contain alcohol.
I know this wasnt the original purpose of the thread, but I drink to get buzzed or drunk, do people actually drink for different reasons?

I disagree. While I don't consider myself a connoisseur of beer, I do enjoy the many different types and tasting them just to enjoy the taste. When I was in college almost every weekend me and my friends would go to a different brewery or microbrewery around Milwaukee and go on the brewery tours were we got to sample different beers. Now while some were, well, alcoholic piss, there are several that I drunk just for the taste.
Now is this true for everyone, no, but I know of several people that drink beer for the taste, more than to get drunk.
Fair enough Guardman, its just that while I certainly have had a few beers that were delicious, their taste has never been my reason for drinking them, though it was my reason for drinking them over something else.
Quite frankly even though it's not true, I think it would've been a good idea. I would've learned far earlier to not abuse liquor if they'd allowed me to start drinking at 14.

a lower drinking age means that parents can introduce their kids to alcohol at a reasonable time and the nuance of the drug will be gone in most people by the time they're on their own.
i'm fairly convinced that a lot of alcohol related problems involving young people in the states is a result of how alienated we are from alcohol for so long. once you have freedom you want to go out and pretend you're really cool and pretend you're in an american pie movie.

that's a good point, it could teach young people to not abuse it at an early age.
I think I learned pretty quick since I hate hangovers lol
These days I pretty much only drink for the flavour and refreshment - I would drink the same drinks even if they were non-alcoholic. Right now my tipples include:
Back in my student days I would drink stronger ciders, Aftershock (Red+Blue=Purple), vodka with various mixers, Taboo, sherry... all sorts of stuff really, but rarely something I didnt like the taste of. There are so many options available I didnt really see the need to.

Magners is absolutely divine. Have you tried Blackthorn? It's an English cider, IIRC, and it tastes absolutely heavenly.
Strongbow is not bad at all. Pretty good to me. I've tried Weston's, another English cider, and it's really, really good. It's only problem is that after 5 or 6 of them, all you start to taste is the alcohol... lmao. But it's still really good.
