But I almost never use the term unless the game I was playing actually WAS a good game. If it was back and forth, changing leads, or a come-from-behind close victory, then sure, I'll say good game. But I hate when I get manascrewed, die on the 5th turn and play one spell, and have the guy across from me stick his hand out and say "good game", like it was actually a contest or something. Sure, he means well, but if it's not a good game, then don't say it.
My friends and I rarely use 'gg' within the context of games. We tend to use the acronym on MSN to mean 'That's terrible' or 'That's bad' in response to a negative event.
Most of the time its a common courtesy thing, in competitive games, stuff like that. "good game!"
But there are times where your team fails so much you say "gg" like gee gee as opposed to good game with the underlying meaning that you are basically saying "damn we fail" or "ya'll suck"
I always use it as just a common courtesy thing, whether I won or lost or even enjoyed the match. Theres times like on Left 4 Dead 2 where we kept wiping but before we quit I said "good game". Its not a sarcastic or, you screwed up, kind of thing. At least, not how I've used it. Or ever seen anyone else use it.

~Intelligence is Bliss; Ignorance is Denial.
Skill is an ability that relates more so to the type of deck that's built and how said player pilots it. It also relates to the ability to assess the board and use the cards available to you in the most optimal way relative to each situation.
When a deck is filled with above par cards and every play is solid, there comes a diminishing need to "think" for the lack of wanting to use a better word.
If a game is an absolute beating, and someone says GG, it's just hollow. It actually annoys me. When I mulligan to 4 and my opponent steamrolls me, it's not a good game. It's a massacre, and he's happy with it. I know that, and accept it, because I would be too if it were the other way around. I'm pumping the fist, mentally, when they're missing land drops..etc.
I only say GG, and only want it said to me, when it is the truth.
For me it's merely a way to signify the end of the game. When a game was indeed good or fun, I'll say it. GG for me is the polite way of admitting defeat. ''I concede'' or ''You win'' have the same ring whenever I play online. I do have a thing, however, against people who say this IRL (literally saying ''GeeGee'').

Some kind of witty comment should be here.
I'm sure you can think of something by yourself.
'gg' - pronounced GeeGee - Occasionally written phonetically.
Phrase acknowledging the end of a game or match.
Can be used as sarcasm, to highlight a premature or unfair conclusion.
I usually say gg at the end of every match win or lose. usually when the game is over or when i know they have me and im about to hit concede.
The other day though i was playing in the finals of a draft. the guy was at 12 and tapped out, and I had a fully leveled lord of shatterskull pass in play. I said gg and played my world at war.
BTW he had the nuts draft deck(drana, gul draz assasin, kazandu tuskcaller, pelakka wurm, awakening zone, etc) and his name was "betterthanyou" I thought it was appropriate to say gg when I knew i had won.
He responded with "yeah, great fking game" I guess I should have said gg after i killed him?
Hmm... GG, when I say that it's most likely after I walk over someone. Which is sad, because I know it upsets them.

It's understandable blue control players would be shocked and in denial at the notion of this card, since their decks have been dominating multiple formats for an eternity yet they've curiously never once had to deal with any counter-hosers that weren't ineffectual, narrow CRAP.
I'm an absolutely hopeless player, in actual fact, so I always appreciate hearing the 'Good game' comment from the other side of the far more experienced table.
Although I (and they) realise that unless something catastrophic happens they're going to win, it's nice to know they still had fun and enjoied having a game with you.
Online, I always say gg. I like the game, it doesn't matter if it went horribly for me, or if they lost every match - I enjoy the game a lot and thus it will always be a good game*.
(* This rule does not apply if my opponent is a rude arrogant ****
Also usually does not apply if they were so slow I was able to send text messages between turns.)
Side Note: Also coincidently the name of the card store I frequent. Good Games.
To me, it's simply a show of respect. I always say "good game" after any Magic game, whether or not I got thrashed around. If the guy's being a douche, that's a different story - but if my opponent's a decent guy, always a gg.

It's always stood for good game for me. And always at the end of a game. It's just the meaning that will either make you feel like you've had an enjoyable time, or want to bash your opponent in the face.
I say gg online, and online I think it means 'Good game' ... though obviously w/the vagaries of the english language you can make it mean any number of things. Offline it's much, much worse to say gg, especially as 'GG', and sometimes as 'Good game', even.
I don't say good game verbally if something turns it into a slaughter: then it wasn't a good game.

Its like rubbing your opponent's face in his loss, especially if it _wasn't_ a good game (losing because of mana screw, for instance).
The only time I'd say it is if it _was_ a good game. That is, my opponent enjoyed playing even if he lost.

4 real, Green is the hottest thing since toasted bread.
GG = Go Green forever :]
If the game was a slaughter, it means "LOL SCRUBOWNED"
If the game was pretty even, it means "Well played, good game"
If the game was won on a lucksack top deck, it means "LOL OWNED I WIN YOU LOSE".
