I learned about the quake from a Chilean friend of mine this morning through MSN before I got a chance to check out the news. His family is okay, but he's getting phone calls up the wazoo.
However, this came up in discussion:
Haiti, 7.0: ~230,000 dead
Chile, 8.8: 78 reported deaths at this time
It's a stunning comparison, but it really demonstrates the already obvious significance of the strength of economies and the better infrastructure and safety measures that come along with it. Chile has quite the history with earthquakes, including a 9.5 in 1960 and an 8.4 in 2001, so I'm sure they're preparations for such events are more than adequate, to say the least.
Now what's even more concerning is the cross Pacific mega tsunami that's been generated as a result of the earthquake. Warnings have been issued in Japan, Russia, New Zealand, South America and Hawaii...
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
You are overlooking a huge factor though. The Haitian quake was shallow and caused the ground to move a lot more than the one in Chile. The magnitude is only one factor in determining how much damage will occur. Economics will play its role, but the Haitian quake was a much more damaging movement of the earth regardless of who or what was on top.
At least in Santiago and in aothe Chilean cities that have building codes and the recources to contruct things to withstand earthquakes. however, one of this magnitude is unbeleiveable. And the aftershocks and tsunamies are going to be terrible as well.

Very true. I wasn't aware of that at all. But I think urban population density had a big role, that and a lot of people living in shanty towns.

Indeed. I hate to see so much pointless destruction and suffering. My heart goes out to the victims present and future. Nothing they can do to stop it, at least they have some time to evacuate and take proper measures to ensure minimum casualties. Hawaii is likely to be hit within less than 3 hours...

Well, on the bright side (from what I understand) that was a TON of pressure that was building up that is now gone, so they should be safe for a long time after this now.
The scary thing is when you don't have an earthquake for a long time and it just keeps building.
All of you North Easterners whose WWK prereleases got ruined by snow probably thought that was bad, huh? Well, my PTQ's about to get stopped by a tsunami!
Edit: Although this pales in comparison, obviously, to the people that lost their lives when this earthquake occurred.

Don't Jinx them! Anyways, the possible tsunami supposedly will arrive in 1.5-2.5 hours if it arrives.

You say your prerelease is going to be stopped by a tsunami? Our open tournament was stopped because half country is rubble, and you thought that was bad.
Seriously though, it felt really hard here and i'm not even on what's considered the disaster zone. Highways all around the country are destroyed and in some tcities it seems the food supplies are dwindling (maybe that's massive histeria though), it's really difficult to travel to the north or from north and it seems the international airport of Santiago was damaged, so, the situation is complicated, fortunately i'm fine as all my close family.
When determining the factor for human life loss from an earthquake, we must also consider where the earthquake hit-obviously a strong quake that happens where no one is living will not kill anyone, while a slightly less powerful quake that occurs right under a city, etc. will have more of an effect. Galspanic is correct in that Magnitude is only one factor-I should know, I'm a Geologist!
Anyway, condolences to all those is Chile, and those who might be affected by the tsunami that was a result of the quake.
Hi guys... I'm from Santiago, Chile, and the things here are less than what could be expected for an 8.8 richter earthquake. Even though, townsnearer to the epicentre, which was like 250 miles from santiago, have suffered a lot :S. Also, highways are a mess, and we have the panamerican road cut on different points.
but as someone else said, Chile is a country prepared for earthquakes (if you are not prepared... then what were you thinking about living in the pacific ring of fire then) and we will rebuild and recover. That's what we do. Viva Chile, mie***!!

Good to hear and thanks for the update. The news in the US is treating this like Haiti and Chile are the same and it's almost insulting. Apparently in the US, all countries outside of Europe and Canada are just a bunch of poor brown people who can't learn how to build stuff and stupidly erect cities in disaster prone areas. Cuba = Haiti = Costa Rica = Peru = Africa = etc.
It's embarrassing and nobody seems to understand exactly what you said.

I agree. Let's not give them any disaster aid.
Actually, I would fully support that motion. I don't even support giving Haiti money the fiscal conservative that I am. But the point I'm getting at is that you're taking the comment the wrong way. I'm sure what whoever said that meant was that we will be ready and willing to provide assistance to Chile as we did Haiti, and not that Chile is a third-world, impoverished nation.
It's actually more the tone of the coverage. The news anchors talk about Chileans like they are children. It may be as simple as "News crews point cameras at people they identify with differently that people they don't." But my hatred for the Old White Club that is American journalism runs pretty deep. Don't get me started about the Asian reporter that is ALWAYS wearing a parka covering the terrible weather while the white news anchors say, "And now to Tran Ngyuen covering blizzards traffic on Mt Hood." I have lived in 3 states and even in Iowa they had Asian reporters covering the severe winter weather. IN IOWA!!!!
And really, sentimentGX4, I don't watch all news stations. There might actually be some that are doing a job of treating Chileans like equal people, but here in Oregon...Nah.
NASA says that the recent 8.8 Magnitude earthquake that struck Chile shifted the Earth's Axis therefore shortening the day. Was this what Edgar Cayce prophesized?
Not exactly, Edgar only mentioned about the Polar Axis being shifted and that many areas on Earth that are on land would sink to the Ocean floor, the state of California would sink into the Pacific Ocean, and the lost city of Atlantis would rise from the sea.

i think what is worse is that i guess there are some islands off of chile, or there are some settlements right on the ocean that were wiped out by the tsunami that happened.
80% of 180K people are out of homes right now because of the tsunami effect.
