I basiclly joined just to figure osmething out, that i read on a forum that I'm a memeber of.
During Gencon (Which I was unable to attend due to various reasons) there was appearently a fire alarm that went off casuing folks to leave. And from what the admin on that other forum that i mentioend above has stated he blames it on the MTG community:-/
This doesn't seem right to me, I don't think that MTG players would steal;if they do,anything from a game thats not Magic...
so,my question is why would a player of a different think that a whole other group of players stole stuff:confused:
I dont know why they might decide to jump on blaming the MTG community per se (although we unfortunately are a group known in the gaming community for having larger instances of theft)but a white belt in google fu will reveal that the fire alarm was in fact pulled by people on the second floor who saw smoke comming up from someone trying to cook a frozen pizza in a toster oven near the entrance. So in essence no conspiracy or anything just a stupid unfortunate incident.

oh,i knew about the fire, I just don't like it when others blame a whole group for the actions of a few,it irks me to no end when it happens.....

Then you haven't been playing very long. Lucky for you that you don't understand. I hope you never do.

It probably has something to do with the fact that for the group making these claims, in 4 years of them playing their particular minis game at GenCon, nothing has ever been stolen from their area before. But the very first time 1,000-2,000 Magic players walk en masse through their area, stuff gets stolen.
I don't think that every single Magic player is being blamed, but the group as a whole has a bad rep due to the actions of a few bad apples. In 10 years of playing Magic, I have never been at any major event where I felt safe setting my stuff down for a couple of minutes with no one watching it.
I play other games where I have left my stuff all day long, and never thought twice about it.
All CCGs or TCGs (Pokemon, Yugioh!, Magic) are like that. I don't think that it's that the players are more dishonest but that they have more of an incentive to steal. In many games, nothing of value can be stolen and sold in the secondary market. In other instances, the secondary market could be very small.
For CCGs, the secondary market is relatively large and the cards relatively valuable. I mean, for many people, a chase rare could very well just be a sitting $20 bill. It also happens that the objects of value are lightweight and portable. It's just like how you never leave your cellphone or iPod unattended but you can leave your textbooks anywhere you want.
I do agree that Magic players would be unlikely to steal anything other than Magic cards, however. Electronics are fair game for everyone so you should never have those laying around. Basically, players of other games probably have little to worry about.
I wondered what that smell was as I was walking out.
Yes my first instinct was to grab ALL my stuff and take it with me, as it could be stolen. I think magic players get a bad rap, but my guess is that %magic thieves/magic community =%ccg thieves/other ccg communities. In essence more numbers=more thieves trying to capitalize, but NOT a higher percentage. Then again I could be wrong. I do wonder what the vendors did, hopefully they were all smart and were able to lock up a lot of stuff.

That was my instinct as well. Of course, I just had a single backpack, and I have been through a fire alarm thing like that before. You basically have four minutes to get out of the building, and if you can't make it, then you wouldn't have anyway.
But alot of other people there weren't able to just pick everything up and go. Some were thinking about their personal safety. Some people simply had too much to carry, especially if there was a REAL fire.
I can't stress how disheartening it is that any person - regardless of the game they play - would use the incident as an excuse to rifle through other people's stuff.
