So, at 4 in the morning, I have come to the conclusion that I am a very, very strange person. As I finished my third pot of coffee in the last 6 hours, the following thought occurred to me: "How much do I need to drink before I die?"
Well. I did the math, and I find it rather entertaining.
According to this, a 16 oz cup of folgers coffee has about 170mg of caffeine. I make mine at twice strength. Therefor, I can assume that Per every 16 oz cup, I am drinking 340mg of caffeine. I drank three 72 oz pots of coffee, therefore I drank 4,590mg of caffeine.
According to this, the average lethal dose in humans is 150 mg per kilgram of body weight. I weigh 185. A kilogram is roughly 2.2 pounds. Therefore, I weigh 84 kg. A lethal dose for me, therefore, is about 12, 600mg caffeine.
4,590 / 12,600 = 36.4%
I am over a third of the way towards quite literally dying from too much coffee.
I found this to be mildly entertaining.

And you, too, are one of us, and yet you are not. In your words I hear anger, hatred. I see a darkness that is not cold and lifeless, but is alive and moving, like a living entity. I feel caged, trapped, a yearning for escape. --Death Gate Cycle Volume 3: Fire Sea
You won't have quite that much of course, because your liver spoils the maths of it somewhat :-/, but 3 double strength coffees is still a helluva lot.
Not bad. I've consumed well over 96 oz of energy drinks before (in a day). But I just did the math and I am not even close - it turns out that coffee has more caffeine in it than energy drinks, who knew? I also am 6'2 and weigh 215 lbs.
Pretty rad story though bro. That is actually pretty funny.
Media is not making me steal. But in a way is like the story of the very hot girl with the short skirt teasing the old sick guy with a history of rape.
crap, I was told Mountain dew contained more caffeine than an equal volume of coffee...I was wrong. need to switch drinks so I die of caffeine before I die of peeing myself to death
You might also want to take into account that your body probably builds up resistance to caffeine, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it would effectivley double your resistance to the death threshold. However, if pure caffine were injected directly into your heart, I wouldn't be surprised if the threshold were lowered quite considerably.

"Wizards could put $100 bills in packs and people would complain about how they were folded."
@ Frenger: That website is pretty rad. I looked up Redline, and it said it would take 48 Redlines to kill me. That is ridiculous considering I've had four in a day before and I thought the good lord was coming to take me. I couldn't imagine what five Redlines would feel like let alone 48...I think at 47 your capable of time traveling...
Hahaha, almost every post here has made me laugh. Apparently it would take 115 cans of RedBull to kill me. Thats seriously messed up. I don't drink Redbull though, my friend crashes horribly off it so I stayed away. However my energy drink of choice, monster, would only take 60 cans to kick my bucket. Time to get chugging.....
Edit: Did anyone look up McDonald's Coffee. I wouldn't drink it before. Now though, I'm damn near scared.

What you're all failing to take into account is that caffeine is a diuretic. In the vast majority of cases, you're never going to be able to drink enough caffeine to kill you as you'll piss it out before you get anywhere near that point.
Haha. This is message I got after choosing Yoo-Hoo:
There's no caffeine in Yoo-Hoo Chocolate, so that won't
kill you. You can go for death by sugar intake, though.
Wired X344, whatever that is, only takes 42 servings to kill me. That is very doable.
I don't know what Alien Energy Jerky is, but I want some, and it would only take 133 of them to kill me. I may die this weekend if I get my hands on some Jerky.
hmm i'm not sure about you but i believe us normal human beings has a thing call a liver, you know the thing to keep us from OD from most food stuff. :/

There's this website that tells you the lethal dose for any product (from chocolate to bleach, and from the time needed hanging from a rope to the time spent in a pot of boiling water)
I remember that the website tells us that 20 grams of cafeine is lethal. A strong cup of coffee holds about 100 milligrams, so we calculated that 200 cups of coffee would be lethal.
Often energy drinks contain more caffeine than a cup of coffee, but you will still need to drink over 100 cans of energy drink. Before dying of caffeine, you will have died of drinking 33 liters of liquid.

Avoid the fluids altogether; go with dry-swallowing caffeine pills!

The liver is responsible for enzymatic drug metabolism, and other things. When you OD, often your kidneys and liver are the first two organs to go, because they're immediately responsible for detoxication and toxication of drugs.
... but how the hell do you OD on food?

And and but you develop a tolerance to the drug's pharmacological effects?
So, having developed the tolerance, you need much, much more for xanthoids like caffeine to actually effect the rate of urination, and you also need considerably more to OD.
When you OD, often your kidneys and liver are the first two organs to go, because they're immediately responsible for detoxication and toxication of drugs.
Not necessarily. Failure to process X drug in Y minutes does not indicate liver or kidney failure, it just means the amount of drug has exceeded the enzymatic capacity of the organ. The organ may still work just fine at its other jobs (breaking down bile, storing glucose, filtering and reuptake of salts) or it may be hampered or crippled by the sheer volume of metabolites or the competitive inhibition of key enzymatic pathways. Liver and kidney damage are usually products of a) toxic metabolites and b) direct action of the drug on the target organ, not just sheer volume. In many cases, the brain is the first organ to "go" despite its relative unimportance in clearing drug from system. This may block important compensatory behaviors, such as drinking water to help clear the kidneys, or eating a glucose rich meal to help the liver recover from an insult (alcohol, etc.)
Caffeine in that respect has a ton of CNS and autonomic effects that work in concert with its diuretic effect to make it easier to clear from the body. Hyperactivity, diuresis, higher metabolic rate and cardiac output all conspire against caffeine remaining in the body for very long. Give a big IV dose to a bed-bound patient with renal impairment and/or fluid restriction, and you will see it hang around a lot longer.

Good info because I drink a double shot of Rockstar enegry drink a day. I probably need to cut back.
I'd be in the bathroom all day if I drank the 270.99 cans of Diet Cherry Coke that would kill me. I think after the first 100 cans, I'd probably hate Diet Cherry Coke and never want to see it or hear about it ever again.

@ flappy - I need to know the website you are referencing. I like to make myself laugh hysterically over how much Vitamin B12 is takes to kill someone...which I think is more likely considering I average about 32 oz of Red Bull a day - 8oz contains 250% daily Vitamin B12. That's ten times the amount of Vitamin B12 per day...I don't know if too many vitamins is a bad thing, but I can tell you from experience, without the B12, I no longer function properly (caffeine is so 1990s).
I know excess vitamin C just gets urinated out of your system, but B12? No freakin' idea.
But yeah, i've done crazy stuff with energy drinks too.
I love how on the Amp bottles it says something along the lines of not exceeding 3 cans within like a 6 hour period. Well, me and a friend decided to have a 6 pack chugging contest. We each downed 6 cans in under 10 minutes. DAMN. We were like frigging vibrating, it was amazing. I have never, ever felt anything of the sort before. Then, two hours later, we passed out.

The scariest part is when you figure out how many energy drinks it would take to kill a toddler. It's like 6 cans or something.
