I have some of the highest gas taxes in my state among US States...and yet its barely 4 dollars a gallon. I feel somewhat lucky...yet still pissed at the fact that it is $4.00 bucks.
Here in the Sacramento area, I just filled up yesterday for $4.43/gallon regular unleaded, which is about the cheapest I can find.
We could certainly see $5/gallon before the year is out.
I bet it goes down fifty cents, and then never ever drops lower. I bet the oil companies present "unexpected" profits in the final quarters of the year.
Yeah.....oil companies and such have been claiming to be oh so 'concerned' about the price of gasoline. As long as they keep posting record profits/increasing profits it pisses me off. I know business is business, but oil companies are lacking ethics.
I don't remember what oil company it was, but I remember that a CEO retired like 5-6 years ago and they got $500 million. Talk about squandered resources. Imagine what that $500 million could do. Open up a new refinery to up production? Invest it?
I'm all for capitalism and the American Dream. However, I don't think anyone out there really needs/deserves $500 million when they retire on top of whatever ridiculous sum of money they'd get as an annual salary. The only sorts of achievements I feel are grounds for giving $500 million upon retirement is the guy who finds the cure for something major like cancer or AIDS. Their contributions to the world at that point are so invaluable that $500 million probably wouldn't cover it. The guy who just happened to call the shots in an office for an oil company does not fall in this category at all.
I just get frustrated thinking that the reason why the price of oil/gas is going up is so that John T. Lamerson can buy that 15th mansion and maybe a small country when he retires.
Thankfully gas around here has stabilized to about $4.05 for the last couple weeks. I say 'thankfully' loosely.
$4.53/gallon for unleaded in Sacramento and that seems to be a pretty good deal from what ive seen around. It was just 4.20's like 2 weeks ago. By the end of the summer it seems like its gonna be $5

I've long figured it'd breach $5 this summer, and a few people I talk to think it'll hit $6 based on current trends. The real question, though, is how high it'll go before most people begin to stop buying it. I'd guess at somewhere between $6 and $7 per gallon (for the US).

Are you in the Bay Area Zith?
LikeThemApples and I are in the Sacramento area (I'm in Citrus Heights -> Folsom), and I routinely fill up at Sam's Club gas, which has been typically running 10-25¢ cheaper than most other places (even AM/PM), but even they were $4.43 on Friday when I filled up (so was AM/PM). When I last filled up a week and a half ago, Sam's was $4.13/gallon.
Up 30¢ in 2 weeks? So not good.
Currently, the Milwaukee area of Wisconsin is hovering between $3.90 and $4.10 a gallon. It really just depends where you stop, it seems.
I think if it hits 5 bucks a gallon, I'm going to stop driving. With no job and a not-exactly-fuel-efficient car, anything more than 5 bucks isn't worth it.

You really think people well stop buying gas. Not buying gas is like not buying food. All this increase in gas does is change how people do things in there lives.
They are going out less. They make one big trip instead of several small ones to do errands. vacations are closer to home, or vacations are just staying home.
Everything in our lives involve gas one way or another. From just getting to work, to the goods in our house.
People in the north have a even bigger concern. Heating oil. The price of this keeps going up and up to. We HAVE to buy it or find another source of heat, which can be just as expensive if you try to convert over
The oil companies know Americans well just keep tacking this beating over and over again cause we have to.
I know don't matter how expensive gas is i am going to buy even if its just to get to work.

I am the stone that the builder refused I am the visual, the inspiration, that made lady sing the blues I'm the spark that makes your idea bright The same spark that lights the dark so that you can know your left from your right I am the ballot in your box; the bullet in the gun That inner glow that lets you know to call your brother "son" The story that just begun, the promise of what's to come And I'mma remain a soldier til' the war is won
$4.50 here, unless you leave the county, then you can find it around $4.29, but then you've driven out to the county and blown a quarter tank. *shrug*
it will probably go up to just under $5 this summer, hover there, maybe come back down a few cents in the fall, and then go up again in the winter as heating oil use goes up and the holiday travel season begins. This holiday season, the price of fuel may exceed the weather conditions as the main source of travel snarls. People will opt for cheaper flights, meaning fewer and fuller flights; seats overbooked, luggage weight limits, heavier passengers turned away or required to buy a second seat, fewer opportunities to recover from a missed connection. maybe even like 2004 when an entire airline declared bankruptcy and let its computer system shut down, leaving tens of thousands of travelers stranded on Christmas Eve.
Not that train and bus fares are immune. Last year at this time, a one-way MARC ticket from DC to Baltimore cost $11; now it costs $19.50. But you won't pay that, you'll pay $45, because that's how much a business class ticket costs. Why? Because tons more people are taking the train, instead of driving, and coach fills up fast weeks ahead of time, so your selection is narrowed to more expensive seats.

<snip>
I didn't mean stop wholesale, that much is obviously not happening. I meant change current driving habits, opting for alternatives like bikes, public transit, and feet for many things. As prices increase, people will start buying less. I'm guessing this is an accelerating curve, in that more people will change habits when we breach $5 than when we breach $4.50, which is more itself than when we breach $4. I'm guessing that, for my region, $6-7 is a critical point.
I'm on the northern edge of north bay, so it depends on who you ask. What's weird is that I'm in a pocket of lowish prices. Go in any direction from here and prices increase, which still makes no sense to me.

4.20 here. my dad owns gas stations, exxon has sent e-mails saying don't be surprised if the gas prices go up to between 7-9 dollars by november for the election, and then depending on the results it may or may not go down.
So really not so bad compared to most place.
Feel free to bid on my cards here!
but kawasaki 250R is coming to teh rescue in august, 70 mpg!
The prices are rising by about 5% a week currently.
We could certainly see $5/gallon before the year is out.
I'd like to say this is driving M_E crazy, but the price of gas prevents that from happening.
What, you think oil is an infinite resource?
No, but the supply is why it's not a nickel a gallon for gas. That doesn't mean that $4 a gallon gas is reasonable either.
It's insane, to look back a couple pages on this thread, seeing 3 months ago prices were more than a dollar a gallon cheaper than they are now.
It's getting....ridiculous to say the least.

it costs to much. everything is going up
id rather ride my bike and be healthier and create less polution then spend that much on a car + GAS + Repairs
and then i have more money for college
