I read this article, and I was disgusted. Not as a Conservative, but as an American. Are you kidding me? Is there such a problem in the United States that the mere gathering of a REGULATED NATIONAL CONVENTION is protested, just because it's led by Republicans? Is this a sick joke? Liberals and democrats should be ashamed of this. I know Republicans are generally disliked in this day and age, especially where I am, Connecticut. But this event made me disappointed, angry, and frustrated at the closed mindedness of some people.
Smashing windows, lighting garbage cans and throwing them at cop cars, ATTACKING DELEGATES?? What is this, North Korea? The yahoo report stated that an 80 year old delegate had to be treated for injuries, probably due to tear gas directed at the protesters or smoke bombs that the protesters threw themselves. That disgusts me, and it should upset you too.
I don't want to take away people's right to protest, but this is just ****ing ridiculous. When a political party's national convention is disrupted by protesters, when people choose to attack a different political party in this fashion, they should lose their right to protest anything. Oh, and does anyone else the insane hypocrisy in people VIOLENTLY opposing a WAR??
The report said there were only 56 arrests, but dammit, I wish everyone protesting there had been arrested. I'm not going into a big freedom of speech tirade, but when you threaten the well being of others, you deserve to have your rights revoked.
This report made me so pissed at the left, it might have single handedly changed my vote. Before, I wasn't really sure whether I wanted Obama or McCain to win, but if liberals think they can violently disrupt the other political party's convention and get away with it, they SHOULD be dead wrong. I watched Obama's acceptance speech for the DNC: I didn't see any ******* Rush Limbaugh impersonators trying to protest. This is a tasteless and class-less move by liberals, and if Obama doesn't address these protests and apologize for them, then he shouldn't be surprised if there's a lot less votes waiting for him in November.

Er, exactly what should he be apologizing for? I don't quite understand.
That's the precise kind of mentality that the media pushes on video games.
"A kid who played Grand Theft Auto killed, robbed, and stole a car." Should the game developer be responsible for that? Should they be forced to make a public apology for the kid who did that?
People are idiots, and there's no saying that the people who held that protest are even going to vote for Obama.
*sigh*

[19:59] greymon90210: Hey StormBlind how tall are you? "I'm six money *****, don't forget it"
"The Critics always said that we'd only have a black president when pigs flu"...
I seem to remember an assassination scare during protests of the democratic national convention (police are still investigating).
Should McCain apologize for that?
The article really sounds sensationalized to me. I bet there was some stuff going on, but they make it sound like it was a damn warzone or something, which I imagine wasn't the case.
Still pretty pathetic. I always get a kick out of these hypocritical protesters who burn and destroy things to protest war. It only makes the left wing and by association democrats look bad.
didn't the article say the once causing the violence were self described anarchists? Why should Obama apologize for the actions of a political party with which he has no affiliation?
I would like to point out that there's nothing for liberals or dems to be ashamed about. They were a group of self-proclaimed anarchists.
I do always enjoy the irony of anarchists organizing things like this. Wearing dark clothes, calling themselves the RNC Welcome Party. Quite the organization.
The little bits that bother me most is them spraying chemicals at delegates? I'll assume the best and say it was just windex. Throwing bricks into buses?
This is all just ridiculous. Why does this happen?

Drop by my Helpdesk if you have any questions/concerns on the Limited forum.
Excited for M13 Limited? What do you think the format will look like? Head over to the limited forum and let us know what you think.
I will personally not vote republican unless McCain gets bush to come apologize for these actions. </sarcasm>
Regardless, I think that there are actions taken by the police that are just as bad if not *worse* than those taken by the protesters. Why? Even if the actions taken were somehow exactly equal on both sides, I would still side with the protestors. Why? Because only one side has M16s.
First of all, I shouldn't have to defend my name, seeing as I can tell the difference between movies and real life. I took the name of the fight club character because of my appreciation of the book by Chuck Palahniuk and its film adaptation, not because I start random fights in the streets.
On topic: all I'm saying is, I didn't see anything like this happen at the DNC, and to not see who these people really support is just being blind. Sure, they call themselves anarchists, but I didn't see them injuring Democratic delegates. I'm not saying someone SHOULD have attacked the DNC, on the contrary, I find it hard to believe anyone would protest a political party's convention, especially violently.
Maybe demanding Obama apologizing sent off the wrong message. It's not like he released the chains off of these anarchists. I was pissed off, sorry. I just have a hard time believing something like this would happen, just because people don't like a political party. Blog about it, write on stupid message boards like this one, or just talk to someone with an opposing political view than you: don't throw freaking gas at 80 year olds.
Violence and attacks on anything should be condemned, of course. I think protesting, as long as it is nonviolent, is perfectly acceptable. Why can't they voice their opinion on something they feel strongly about? Isn't America supposed to be a free country, with freedom of expression, and speech? If there was any violence, such as the smokebomb, that's definitely not acceptable. But I certainly think that people who are angry at a party or group should have the right to protest it.
I mean, it's not like Republicans or conservatives have never violently protested before.
Of course, as always, violence is not the answer. But to treat what was going on inside as neutral is crazy, the US government kills thousands of people with its lust for power over the middle east, so I don't think they can criticize.
This behavior is clearly deplorable and intolerable. But so is blaming it on the Democrats. I mean, saying that they're somehow responsible because these people, who are blatantly claimed Anarchists, only went after the Republicans..is just ridiculous.
The Republicans are the party in power. The Democrats are the contenders. Why would anarchists bother protesting them?
I do always enjoy the irony of anarchists organizing things like this. Wearing dark clothes, calling themselves the RNC Welcome Party. Quite the organization.
I fail to see the irony of anarchists, who beleive in free organisation, following their beliefs and, you know, organizing.
The little bits that bother me most is them spraying chemicals at delegates? I'll assume the best and say it was just windex. Throwing bricks into buses?
This is all just ridiculous. Why does this happen?
Because we believe that those who make war on the poor and on us should get war in return, unlike useless liberals.
On topic: all I'm saying is, I didn't see anything like this happen at the DNC, and to not see who these people really support is just being blind.
Well see, the thing is that the Democrats may be useless liberals who don't do anything for the poor, but at least they're not fascists who actively hurt the poor. Hence why the demos at the DNC (there were anarchist demos at the DNC, you know) tend to be less warlike affairs.
However, I do remember my comrades being the only people on the streets protesting when Bloody Clinton dropped his bombs on Serbia, or when he did his encore of George the First's actions in Iraq.
I just have a hard time believing something like this would happen, just because people don't like a political party.
I'm guessing you haven't seen the RNC for the past, what, 10 years? Do you live in a cave somewhere? At Bush's inauguration, we got him to be so scared that instead of walking the last few blocks like is customary, the limo stopped, waited for a bit, then it rolled full blast the remaining distance.
Yeah, so Bush the Second, from the beginning, was shown that his presidency was illegitimate and that if he came out his own people would just rip him to shreds. Like Mussolini. I thought that was rock on.
Blog about it, write on stupid message boards like this one, or just talk to someone with an opposing political view than you: don't throw freaking gas at 80 year olds.
Stay at home, eat your soma, keep your complaints at the level of powerless whining, just, you know, DON'T DO SOMETHING about the things that piss you off. That's just crazy!
It's not THE answer, no. It's AN answer. The Republicans know it, the State definitly knows it (see: Iraq, Kosovo, etc). Only whiny pacifist liberals don't know it. Then they whine that they can't get a break, and that their opponents are always winning. Because they're not willing to fight with all necessary methods, and they'll just let the other guys win using every tactic then act smug because, hey, they might have lost but at least they still followed their completly arbitrary and manufactured moral laws.
This wasn't organized or sponsored by obama or democrats, leave them out of this.
Protests happen all the time, sometimes they get violent when people actually care about what they believe in and it's not always pretty. Unfortunately the republican party gives them alot of fuel and while I may not agree entirely with darkangel's view I agree that your idea of a good way to soothe your anger is counterproductive and a good example of what's wrong with people in this day and age. In 1968 people protested at colleges and all over the country because they avidly disagreed with what was going on. Now Bush's rating is terrible, a majority of the people do not support the war, I think 4/5 people are dissatisfied with the economy or something like that, and no one is doing anything. Where the hell is the American spirit that made us overthrow the british and stand up for ourselves.
I Do not agree necessarily with violence in protesting but by god, what the hell does sitting at home and blogging about it do?! This isn't a freaking bad day at work we are talking about. It's the hijacking of our country for the interests of big business and it's hurting America!
Hell it's almost too much to ask for for people just to SHOW UP AND VOTE nowadays, let alone actually protest and rally for what they believe in.
On an ending note the 80 year old politician being hurt is regrettable but I'm sure that was no one's intention in the first place.

See these "anarchists" feel empowered because they know that nothing can be done about them. Say a rock that they throw kills a cop or an elderly man. They can cheer and be celebrated as heroes. But if the police actually fired at them in response. It would be an atrocity and an absolute abuse of power.
If I was a riot cop in that situation. Any rock thrown at me would get a bullet shot back. I'm sorry but being assaulted with a deadly weapon is cause enough for use of deadly force. If the police actually responded in kind to these idiots they wouldn't be so willing to "protest" for what they believe in.

Seriously. The police have responded in kind. Do respond in kind. They respond in ways the protesters cannot. I'm not arguing that the police are entirely in the wrong. But the protesters aren't either.
It's a vicious cycle. Each side steps it up until both sides go far beyond what they should.
It's still funny. If you're really anarchists, you shouldn't be organizing in groups obviously.

That's a great attitude. The world is really going to be a better place with people thinking like that.

Wow, congratulations. Do you want a ****ing cookie, or do anarchists not believe in them?
Have you ever read any anarchist literature or even understood anarchy in any significant way?
There's a difference between doing something for a reason and doing something just for the sake of doing it. These anarchists clearly have no actual political messages to send, they just enjoy causing trouble and MAKING THE REPUBLICANS SHAKE IN THEIR BOOTS OMG. Not everyone else on the world is on Soma just because we don't act out our ridiculous beliefs with blind violence and rage like a bunch of ****ing teenage emo kids. Get over yourself.
It's an answer, just a very poor one that makes everyone in your crappy "organization" look like a bunch of idiots. Although the fact that they're a bunch of idiots is also a contributing factor.
and
Honestly, I wish you could hear how ridiculous you sound. Your "beliefs" are nothing more than the beliefs of some depressed teenager who has to rebel against everything for no reason. These protesters aren't actually accomplishing anything, they're just making asses of themselves, and it's a testament to how incredibly dumb they are that they don't realize it. If you really think scare tactics is the correct way of going about a protest, then I don't even know what to tell you. It's time to get over your girlfriend dumping you, stop listening to Good Charlotte, and actually behave like an adult.
Obviously not.
Could you please grow some perspective on the entire anarchy movement before you criticize it and make ad hominem attacks? Seriously, you have demonstrated that your beliefs are 'nothing more than the beliefs of some depressed teenager' who is becoming far too cynical and unimaginative. Anarchy and anarchists don't fit into traditional notions of acheivement or accomplishment, so saying that they aren't accomplishing anything and that they're just making asses of themselves is just missing the point.
I'll apologize if I was too cruel to anyone, but people pulling this crap in my hometown will elicit that type of reaction from me. These people don't deserve my empathy. Sorry to SilveryCord or DarkAngel if I offended you, but this kind of crap really gets my blood boiling.
EDIT: Alright I looked up some anarchism stuff on Wikipedia, and it sounds interesting. Unfortunately these "anarchists" don't seem to be following the rules of people using common sense and ethics.
