Well, the weird thing is, it SOMETIMES (read; upon the restart of the computer) can do it all right. It's only when the computer has been running for a while that it has the problem. Would that change anything?

I recently bought Guild Wars.
GW requires:
Windows XP
Intel Pentium lll 800 Mhz or equivalent
256 MB RAM
CD-ROM Drive
2GB Available HDD Space
ATI Radeon 8500 or GeForce 3 or 4 MX Series Video Card with 32 MB of VRAM
16-bit Sound Card
My computer fallowing information:
Dell
2.79 Ghz
256 RAM
Pentium 4 Processor
5 MBPS Cable Internet
Now one of you might see the problem right away, but for me it's big time lag.
I can't even enter a District (General meeting place to talk with other players [chat room]) without waiting two-three minutes. Entering parts of the world generally take around 40 seconds plus.
Just walking around causes lag in an area populated by myself only. Throw in more then 1 NPC and I'm done for.
At times I can get from point A to B without lag, but nothing else is going on at those moments.
I would think that your RAM is the problem, since it only meets the minimum requirements of GuildWars. I'm kinda unsure though, so anyone else got an opinion?
New problem:
My computer now has spyware. The only thing of value on it are a few MMOs.
Are there any free downloadable programs to get rid of it? I know AOL has good protection, but I'm not sure if it'll help against something already in the computer.

By good protection you mean it is spyware.
To answer your question: I always have liked Spybot S&D .
Microsoft also has one, from when they bought Giant antispyware. It's here
Also, if you want a fix to just rid it from your system, Spy Sweeper has a 30-day demo that should help rid you of all of them. I've used it in the past, but decided as long as: I don't visit malicious sites, and don't click on crap; I won't need that many antispyware progs. I currently use an Ad-Aware/Spybot S&D cocktail. If you want a fix to get rid of your current infestation use all four until you find what works.

Okay, I'm a total noob when it comes to computer hardware, so I need help with this.
I have some DVD-Rs that I want to burn to, since the CD-Rs I have don't have enough space. However, my computer won't recognize that there is an actual CD in the drive when I put the DVD-Rs in. I was told this means I don't have the proper firmware installed.
So my question is, where can I get this firmware? I tried to do the 'automatic install' for firmware, but my computer couldn't find any updated firmware. I doubt this is correct, since the firmware dates back to 2001.

It's also possible that your drive lacks DVD reading and/or writing abilities.
Nai: Do you know if the burner can use both dvd-r and dvd+r? If not you might want to try a dvd+r.

I found out exactly what Darkasecas posted. Apparently, even though it's billed writing to both DVD and CD, it can only write to CD. Which is really odd, because I recall writing to a DVD-RW before. Weird.
I want to reinstall Windows Xp soon, as I got a virus and after cleaning the computer doesn't work as smooth as before. I gives some strange erros and sometimes it justs hangs up... I want to backup Outlook Express emails and settings before reinstall, and restore afterwards. Any help?
Pompi: have you tried using antivirus/anti malware first?

Thank you very much for your suggestion.
That was just like what I needed. However, if I am to choose between a manual backup and a automated one ( made by a software ) I would go
with the last one, because I'm not the "do it your self" type, and I'm afraid of the possibility of losing it if I don't do the backup just right. Too bad the OE Quick Backup has been discontinued.. Sounded like a nice application. However, after searching for similar software tools on the web I've found several , such as http://www.amicutilities.com/outlook-express-backup/
This look like my problem is solved.
Thank you!
At work, we have a computer with a dead screen... AKA someone has hit it and the LCD has cracked and made it pretty much unreadable save the top left corner.
We now need information off of this computer but don't have the disc to re-install the programme on another computer.
Is it possible to link it to another laptop using a USB cable and transfer the programme? If so, how?
Thanks in advance.
There are a number of things you could do.
You could:
Hook up another monitor to it for the short term, allowing you to back up the existing files and upload them to server or another computer.
Detach the existing harddrive and attach it to another computer.
Naturally, the first is a lot quicker and simpler.
Right, the only problem is we don't have a spare monitor lying around atm, and also... I don't know how to remove the hard drive from it as it all seems a fairly sealed unit which looks specialist made, as it is a diagnostics computer for vehicles.
I don't know if there is anything I can do
You guys have more than two PCs in the place right?
Turn off one station, disconnect the monitor, etc etc until the backup's done.
Sephirot Owa: Most likley you can just connect your other screen to the laptop and use that as a screen. Then you can just burn it out, borrow a external harddisk for transfer, etc.
btw: if its a program you are just copy+pasting to another machine its not sure it will work because some of it is probably tied to the windows register.
