I have a big problem- I put everything off to the last minute, also known as procrastination. I find it really annoying, but I can't help myself. Does anyone have any advice on how to break the habit?

Yes, procrastination is a big problem and not all that fun. I myself am a huge procrastinator (in fact, I have no doubt that as a superhero, that would be my moniker) and only recently have been able to repress it, though only slightly.
I think procrastination might be one of the only habits that's impossible to break. But, it's possible to fight it a bit. The methods I use are usually either:
1.) Sheer force of will
2.) Threaten myself with bodily harm
3.) Get someone else to do it
4.) Get someone to nag you about it until you explode
or, none of the above. Really, I've found that there's really not much that can be done to combat procrastination. you've just got to bite the bullet and DO IT.
Make a schedule. This girl I know at school has everything planned to the nearest five minutes, including study time for each class, work, as well as the gym hours.
Breaking procrastination can be extremely hard, but it can be done. Dividing work into much smaller chunks and then spreading it out over a longer period of time works for me, but only if you stick to it. Failing miserably because of procrastination can be a great motivator, but only if procrastinating really makes you do badly. I was a major procrastinator, but the kind who could still make 90's with ease despite leaving everything until the very last possible moment. I tried to break it in college but found that it didn't really boost my marks by much so now I've gone back to procrastinating. I make lists of things to do, but I rarely follow them.
But I guess if you really want to break the habit you'll just have to buckle down and force yourself to do as much as you can as early as you can. That way there's nothing to leave until the last minute.
Well, if you really want to break your habit, I would recomend you do what you'd do to break any habit. Simply do something else. Try to catch yourself before you slip up and do it again. After some time, you should have a new habit. The thing is, habits are hard to break. You learned them over a long time, so they will take a long time to break. You usually started doing it for a reason, so you probably don't really want to break a habit anyway. If you really have to break the habit, I recommend a lot of willpower, you're going to need it.

I too am severely familiar with procrastination. I wrote an 8 page paper in a night last weekend. I knew about that paper for well over 2 months. I still don't know why I have been cursed with this slacking virus, but it's a real persistance son of a *****. I have yet to really break out of it's control. In fact, by writing this, I am putting of work on my Spring break project I should be working on. If you reeeeally want to change it, you could do it Fight Club/i <3 huckabees style and "deconstruct" your life. Hit rock bottom, then rebuild yourself. Finally something i know a little bit about for sure. I am very cinfident in saying that even though i am just a sophomore in high school, i have procrastinated more than anyone i know, if you could get a nobel prize for it, i would have 17, and im only 16 years old.
For me it CAN be a problem, but i can often force myself to bounce back from it. Last year, i kept faking sick just so i didnt have to turn in a english paper, and ended up turning it in the day before grades were sent out. I got 1/2 credit on an A paper, which is an F. So when we had another report due the next quarter......i got another F on a A paper. I learned a lot from that year, mostly that even thought i procrtastinate that much i can still get a C in my worst class, but most importantly I learned that i will never be able to fully break this habit.
This year i have faked sick almost 1/2 of the school days, and i still had a 3.0 GPA for the first semester. Basically what I'm saying is that while procrastination is a bad habit, and hard to beat, you can still do fine with it, if you can just enjoy what you have and live life to the fullest while you're procrastinating. I still procrastinate, but now instead off just sitting and wasting my time, i get off the couch and do something i like. That way when i finally get down to business i can't use the excuse that i have to much energy or just want to get out of the house and do something. Maybe i could stop procrasinating, but i wonder if it would really make life any better in the end.

If you dont get that, look at my username, and if you still dont get it, than your to young to have an account on here without your parents permission, YOU ARE A BAD LITTLE CHILD!!!!
I've found my best technique is just to get away from the computer.
Ultimately though, it's just a matter of self-control.
I suppose going to a college where everyone is constantly doing work--or should be--has helped me. I know I can't put something off until next week because if I do that I will be hopelessly behind. Actually, I was a pretty bad procrastinator in high school, but I seem to have gotten over that in college. I suppose it's also a matter of more interesting work that really fascinates me and knowing that if I **** up here, it's serious. You can get away with an amazing amount of stuff in high school, especially if you're smart, but if you go to a very academically inclined college you won't be able to get away with that.
But I don't know if that really helps. I don't think there's an easy solution, but getting rid of the particular things that distract you is definitely helpful.
Darth, I am hopeing that that same thing will happen for me in College. I think part of the reason I procrastinate so much is that I know I can do it, and get away with it. i am smart enough to not need to study in school, so I tend to just think "I don't need to write that report. I can write a C paper easy the night before." And the problem is that I know I can because I have been doing it for years. hopefully in College I will be put in a tougher situation that will make me keep pace.
The computer is a problem for me too. I will waste endless hours online if given the chance. Mostly on here. :tongue2:

I am probably the laziest and most procrastinating person that you will ever meet. I litteraly wait to the last second to do everything. We have a project due in Science class on Wednesday, and we have had 2 weeks to do it so far. I have yet to start on it. But also, when it comes to writing papers, I do my best work at the last minute. For example, last year in 8th grade, for my Gifted class, I didn't go to a field trip to the Salvador Dali Art Museum like the rest of the class, (because I hated that teacher) so I had to write a 5 page paper on him. I had two weeks. I did it all the last night, and it ended up being I believe to be 12 pages, all in 12-point font. He thought that I cheated and took it from somewhere, because I used a lot of big words that I normally would never use in real life. I know that I should stop procrastinating, but I'll do it later.

all jokes aside, it really is a problem, what you should do is be super strict, and plan it all out before you do anything
