"At the start, there was the Word, and the Word was all there was.
Then came Yblisa. All was quiet, and she basked in the silence.
Then came Voes. He brought noise with him, a cacophony of shrieks and sighs, but Yblisa loved him, for he was her brother, so she let the silence be broken.
After a time, once the Word had departed, Voes wished for something more. He went to his sister and asked her to create a new world with him. The silence of nothingness pleased her, she said, but she would gladly help him, that he might be happy. So Voes and Yblisa created existence and everything, the land and the seasons and the sky and the light.
Yblisa smiled and said their work was done, but Voes said he wanted something to fill the sterile land, to give it life and laughter. The silence of their perfectly sculpted creation pleased her, Yblisa said, but she would reluctantly help him, in recognition of the love she bore him. So Voes and Yblisa created all the animals of the world, and they ended the stillness with their calls, roars, and cries.
Yblisa nodded and said their work was done, but Voes said he wanted something to rule over the base animals of their creation, something to be his companion and friend. Yblisa said she was already his companion and friend, and that she would not help him, for he was not content with her love alone. So Voes, alone, created humans, that they might be his companions, and could enjoy the world he and his sister had created.
When humanity entered the world, their voices became amplified until they were so loud that they disturbed Yblisa's eternal silence in a way that the animals could never do. She went to her brother and asked him to remove them, so that all would be quiet again, but Voes refused her, saying they were his friends. Stung by his selfishness, Yblisa plotted to exterminate humanity and restore the pristine quiet she craved. In the dead of night, she walked among the humans, tall and dark. All who saw her cowered, and all who heard her voice shriveled and died. But there were so many humans, and they multiplied at such a rate that she could not possibly kill them all on her own. So Yblisa called upon the land itself - the land she had helped to create - to destroy humanity. The trees came to life and strangled humans with their roots; the mountains crumbled and crushed human villages; the seas swelled and drowned coastal towns.
Once his creations began to suffer in such numbers, Voes realized that something was terribly wrong. He confronted his sister, demanding that she leave his children in peace. She told him that he did not respect her wishes, though she respected his, and that ever since he had arrived, her peaceful life had been disrupted. She loved him yet, she said, but the humans had to be quieted, for they were destroying her sacred silence. But Voes chose humanity over his sister, and the battle that followed was so tremendous that it tore the world they had fashioned into shreds. The surviving humans took up arms among their father, while the land rose to fight alongside its mother. Humanity was annihilated, the world was reduced to nothingness, and all that remained was Voes and Yblisa. She was the elder and the more powerful, but he was the victor, though it cost him everything he had created. Blinded by rage, Voes attempted to destroy his sister once and for all, but she was the First, and he could not end her."
- from the Naakudos myth of the First Creation.
"Our Father cast the Traitor into utter darkness, enraged at His failure to save His creation. Saddened at the loss of His loved ones, He turned His attention to rebuilding. But though He toiled, He could not fashion a new world without the power of His treacherous sister. So He bound her to His will and forced her to aid Him once again. With their powers joined, they reformed our world and everything in it.
Remembering the treachery of His sister's works, Our Father resolved to make the elements subject to Him, this time. Using the Traitor's power, He summoned Elementals, which were embodiments of the world. There were Elementals of wind, Elementals of rain, Elementals of time and death and love and song and light and everything that made up creation, physical or metaphysical. And He gathered them at the very edge of the world and said unto them, "Now you will serve Me." But the Elementals were forged with the Traitor's strength as well as the Father's, and they refused Him in their arrogance.
But His divine inspiration prevailed, and like the Traitor before them, the Elementals were forced to His will. He fashioned a grand Clock, a Clock Tower whose peak soared into the very heavens, and within that Clock He imprisoned the Traitor. And the Clock siphoned out her power and subjected it to Our Father's mastery, and from her power He created the seasons and assigned the Elementals their deserved places. Lo! They raged against His judgment, but the power of the Clock controlled them, and they could not refuse His commands. So the wind Elementals blew in the spring, and the heat Elementals warmed the summer, the tree Elementals shed their leaves in autumn and the ice Elementals chilled the winter nights, and all of them served Our Father, and He said it was good.
Once the world was safe for His children, He made us anew, and set us all about this world. And we prospered and were happy, and the Elementals served us as the Father intended. Every year, He told us, He gathered them at the Clock to make sure they carried out their appointed tasks. And every year, He found that they did. As years passed, the Elementals came to forget their defiance and to serve the Father willingly, and He was glad."

Welcome to the signup thread for Seasons Mafia. This is a game for 21 players. To sign up, post /in in this thread. Please include the number of games you are currently in, and for fun, name your favorite season of the year.
This game uses a slightly modified version of the RobRoy system of randomization:
Players in 0 games get a weighting of 3.
Players in 1 game get a weighting of 2.
Players in 2 games get a weighting of 1
Players in 3 games have a weighting of 0. These players can sign up to play, but won't get in unless less than 21 players with a non-zero weighting are signed up. These players can sign up to replace, if they wish.
Please be aware that joining the game will require a commitment to post at least once every two or three days for several months. Absences longer than that should be cleared with me in advance to avoid being replaced or modkilled (both of which are very disruptive to the game, and make it less fun for everyone involved). I take this commitment very seriously and I ask you to do the same: please do not join if you feel you will be unable to meet the above requirement.
This game features the following:
- Flavor completely written from scratch.
- Built-in protection against mod-gaming, flavor-gaming, and early massclaims.
- Central game mechanic based around the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Some abilities may be used only during certain seasons; other abilities may have different effects depending on what season it is.
- Randomized scumteam. Almost all roles have been designed to be able to play as either alignment. After all players have been randomly assigned a role, a mafia will be randomly selected from among them.
- Deadlines set at the beginning of each game Day.
This game does not feature spectators. I do not allow anyone (except Cyan, DYH, my reviewer) to see the setup until after the game has ended.
Currently in 0 games, will be in 1 basic by the time that the sign ups close.
I promise to not drop off of the face of the earth. (note: to get back into this, I will be reading along whether or not I get in, so, feel free to count me as a replacement if you don't want to rely on someone who's just coming back from about a year and a half after dropping off of the face of the earth.)
I enjoy wearing shorts and a T-shirt, in December.

Like zaj, here we have two seasons, "too damn hot" and "too damn hot and it rains to boot" but considering the usual seasons you all use I would say winter (because the rain makes a little less hot).

The game is not being dumbed down. Control is doing fine; Draw-Go is not the only kind of control. Aggro is doing fine; Red Deck Wins is not the only kind of aggro. Creature combat is an important core concept and belongs in every color. Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.

Either summer or winter. I have an irrational hatred of spring (and to a lesser extent, fall) because when I was little I had really bad seasonal allergies. Then I got shots, so it's not really a problem anymore, but the hatred remains.
But seriously, seriously, I'd go with Fall/Autumn.
Have to say, the randomized scumteam feature is brilliant. I actually tinkered with something similar when I was creating Amnesia Mafia, intending to have the players not remember their alignment until midway through Day 1, but I couldn't figure a surefire way to balance it. Kudos for making a workable game with such a difficult execution.

Lies! -I'm Buffy Summers, town tracker. I used my ability on you and saw that you didn't use any abilities before the game started. My flavor is I was sucked through a mysterious space-time portal and I'm here to kill all the vampires, and my tracking ability is a combination of my Slayer and Native American skills.

Definitely something I would have speculated on were I not part of that scumteam...

Azrael tried it with Inheritance Mafia, then ran (vaguely) the same setup and called it Islander Mafia on GoodGamery. The issue with Islander Mafia was that there was a puzzle element where we had no idea what good foraging in certain areas would do us, similar to the relic-harvesting and zone-transfer mechanics of WoW Mafia.
In Islander Mafia, I ignored the game's unique mechanics and instead just scumhunted and found the four scum.
Here was our postgame conversation:

The problem with the puzzle element in a mafia game is that, as town, you can completely ignore it and still win.
If you can create a puzzle element in a mafia game that requires you to solve it to win, then you might be doing something right, if you let your players know ahead of time.
Quote from Azrael »
Hmm. I actually prefer a puzzle element that doesn't force the entire game to revolve around it. The purpose is to play mafia, after all, and you should be able to bring back a W by using the same skill set demanded by other mafia games.
The big advantage that I like about the puzzle aspect is that it can actually enhance the traditional elements of a mafia game, and allow players to read one another's behavior on a whole new dimension: the game actions they choose to take.
If, for instance, the town can figure out that Rider was lying about not diseasing all the natives, they should be able to be rewarded for that. By the same token, if the mafia can use their night actions effectively and pull the wool over the town's eyes by realistically simulating townie actions while also balancing out their interest in getting mileage out of their abilities, they should also be rewarded for that.
It adds another layer of behavioral strategy that I think emphasizes the behavioral elements at the core of the game, and gives a more transparent record of evidence for 1. the town to attempt to read, and 2. the mafia to manipulate, which increases the overall information and speeds up the ability of players to make judgments (good or bad) about one another.
As I was telling Grak before the game, I think the town needs an additional source of information to try to read, once you take away gaming the mod/setup by adding role randomization into the mix. My previous setups tended to be relatively mafia-friendly, because the town lost a major source of information when gaming the mod/setup became difficult or impossible, and they received nothing back in return. Being able to get a better read on the night actions/public actions that other players make is a great way to give the town a good, healthy flow of information to evaluate, while keeping the game focused on the competition between the players instead of second-guessing which side the mod would put a role.
